Acer Expands Lineup of Eco-friendly Vero Products

Acer launched a lineup of green PCs with its Vero series, including the Acer Aspire Vero laptop for consumers and the Acer TravelMate Vero laptop for commercial use. From PCs to peripherals, Vero devices share certain green guidelines, such as utilizing post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic and shipping in recyclable packaging. As sustainability concerns not only how a product is made but what becomes of it, Acer's Vero devices have also been designed to be easy to disassemble, simplifying the process of repairs or upgrades and ultimately increasing the devices' lifespans.

More than just a stylish computer, the Acer Aspire Vero (AV15-51) is a tangible manifestation of Acer's commitment to more sustainable operations. Its chassis is composed of 30% PCR plastic, cutting CO2 emissions by 21% for the production of that part. The keycaps also contain 50% PCR plastic, and the Aspire Vero's award-winning 100% recyclable packaging can be repurposed as a DIY laptop stand. From there, a thoughtful design helps to eliminate needless waste by making it easy to disassemble, repair, upgrade and recycle the computer or its components. Running the newly-released Windows 11 operating system, it's incredibly easy to use, too.

Gigabyte Unveils its New U4-series of Ultralight Notebooks

The Ultrabook name seems to have faded away, but the concept has clearly not gone anywhere and Gigabyte has announced its new U4-series of what they simply call ultralight notebooks. This is also the first 14-inch notebook series from Gigabyte in a while, since the company has focused on 15.6 and 17.3-inch models over the past couple of years' with the last 14-inch model from the company being the AERO 14.

The U4-series is quite a different beast, as the AERO 14 was still weighing in at 1.89 kg, whereas the U4 is almost half that at 990 grams. If you're a sucker for sturdy products, then this might be what you've been waiting for, as Gigabyte claims it meets the MIL-STD 810G specification, which means that the product has gone through "simulation-testing has been conducted in eight harsh working environments, including extreme altitude, temperature and humidity, mechanical vibration, sand and dust, salt fog, etc."

Intel's DLSS-rivaling AI-accelerated Supersampling Tech is Named XeSS, Doubles 4K Performance

Intel plans to go full tilt with gaming graphics, with its newly announced Arc line of graphics processors designed for high-performance gaming. The top Arc "Alchemist" part meets all requirements for DirectX 12 Ultimate logo, including real-time raytracing. The company, during the technology's reveal, earlier this week, also said that it's working on an AI-accelerated supersampling technology. The company is calling it XeSS (Xe SuperSampling). It likely went with Xe in the name, as it possibly plans to extend the technology to even its Xe LP-based iGPUs and the entry-level Iris Xe MAX discrete GPU.

Intel claims that XeSS cuts down 4K frame render-times by half. By all accounts, 1440p appears to be the target use case of the top Arc "Alchemist" SKU. XeSS would make 4K possible (i.e., display resolution set at 4K, rendering at a lower resolution, with AI-accelerated supersampling restoring detail). The company revealed that XeSS will use a neural network-based temporal upscaling technology that incorporates motion vectors. In the rendering pipeline, XeSS sits before most post-processing stages, similar to AMD FSR.

While AMD's FSR technology is purely shader based, the Intel algorithm can either use XMX hardware units (new in Intel Xe HPG), or DP4a instructions (available on nearly all modern AMD and NVIDIA GPUs). XMX stands for Xe Matrix Extensions and is basically Intel's version of NVIDIA's Tensor Cores, to speed up matrix math, which is used in many AI-related tasks. The Intel XeSS SDK will be available this month, in open source, using XMX hardware, the DP4a version will be available "later this year".

Intel Iris Xe DG1 GPU from ASUS Tested

Intel has been working with its partners to release the Intel Iris Xe DG1 GPU for use in prebuilt computers. ASUS is one of these partners along with GUNNIR who have both announced versions of the card. The ASUS DG1 was the first of these cards to release as part of the "Gamer Xtreme Gaming Desktop" from CyberPowerPC in May. The ASUS DG1 found in that system has recently been tested by ETA PRIME in various games and synthetic benchmarks. The DG1 is only compatible with select motherboards so the card was tested with the Intel Core i5-11400F and ASUS PRIME H410M-A/CSM motherboard included in the computer.

The ASUS DG1 features 80 Execution Units for 640 shading units running at a speed of 1.5 GHz, along with 4 GB of LPDDR4X memory running at 4266 MHz. The card only draws 30 W so features a fully passive design with no additional power connectors. The ASUS DG1 scored 1630 points in the 3DMark Time Spy test, 5837 points in Fires Strike, and 21313 points in Night Raid. The card was also tested in a variety of games including Forza Horizon 4, Injustice, Overwatch where it managed 1080p low 60 FPS performance. These performance numbers are comparable to a Radeon HD 7870 or a GTX 760 while drawing significantly less power. You can view the complete video from ETA PRIME testing the card below.

GUNNIR Announces Intel Iris Xe DG1 Graphics Card

Chinese manufacturer GUNNIR has recently announced their "Blue Halberd" Iris Xe DG1 graphics card a few months after Intel announced the discrete GPU. GUNNIR joins ASUS in releasing the only two discrete Iris Xe graphics cards based on the DG1 GPU however, these products are only available to OEM and general retail availability is unlikely. The low-profile GPU features a single HDMI and VGA connector along with a 45 mm fan which will keep the 30 W TDP card cool. The card comes with a base frequency of 1.2 GHz and a boost clock of 1.5 GHz while the 4 GB of LPDDR4X memory is clocked at 4267 MT/s.
