NVIDIA Silently Relaunching RTX 30-series with "Lite Hash Rate" Silicon Edition

Remember that story regarding NVIDIA relaunching a new RTX 3060 SKU that actually does limit the hash rate for Ethereum mining workloads? Well, not only has it been cemented, but it also has been expanded. Reports are coming in that all but confirm that NVIDIA is on its way to provide its partners with updated silicon that should put mining performance of their RTX 30-series cards into a less palatable price-performance territory for would-be miners. That, in turn, should bring them closer to NVIDIA's CMP (Crypto Mining Processor) cards instead - and as wanted by both the company and consumers.

According to the sources, the new graphics cards will be indistinguishable from those that are still in transit or in stock (all two of them worldwide, of course). NVIDIA is internally describing the revised silicon as "Lite Hash Rate", and that is the message they communicate with AIBs. Apparently, the new "Lite Hash Rate" graphics cards will range throughout the entirety of NVIDIA's already-released RTX 30-series portfolio, from the ill-fated RTX 3060 up to the RTX 3080 Ti - the only absent graphics card is the RTX 3090, apparently, which could mean that NVIDIA is confident enough on that graphics card's cost being too high to be attractive to miners - especially when you consider how much more they are going for above the MSRP that was half-heartedly slapped on it. The new chips carry an update to their SKU identification - the GA102-200 chip that powers the RTX 3080 is being revised to GA102-202, as will all other chips made "lite" in this way. Expect the new cards to start hitting retail come June.

Alienware Launches m15 R5 Ryzen Edition Laptop With up to AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070

Dell's gaming subsidiary, Alienware, has launched a product designed to reintroduce products of a company that was abandoned in the laptop sector a long time ago. For all those years, the heart of Alienware laptops was promised to Intel, however, that is no longer the case. Today, Alienware has introduced a Ryzen edition of the m15 R5 gaming laptop, powered by... you guessed it, AMD Ryzen 5000 series of mobile processors.

The new Alienware m15 R5 Ryzen Edition laptop is set to bring the balance to the force. Featuring AMD's flagship Ryzen 9 5900HX overclockable processor, the CPU is paired with NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 3070 graphics card. All of that is crammed inside a 15-inch body that offers QHD 240Hz or FHD 360Hz panels for the best possible gaming experience. For the cherry on top, the laptop offers Cherry MX keyboard switches with per-key RGB lighting. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti Could be Offered in Both 8 GB and 16 GB SKUs

Uniko's Hardware, a usual spot for leaks and information on upcoming hardware, has put forward that NVIDIA could be looking to introduce two versions of its upcoming RTX 3070 Ti graphics card. The difference would be dual-sided GDDR6X memory or not, which would make available memory capacities for this card in the league of either 8 GB (the same as the RTX 3070) or 16 GB running at 19 Gbps.

The intention with the RTX 3070 Ti is to bring the fight back to AMD, who released a pretty good offering to the market in the form of the RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT graphics cards - both featuring 16 GB of GDDR6 memory. NVIDIA is looking to improve its market position compared to AMD by offering both the RTX 3070 and RTX 3070 Ti on the market. It could also be a time for NVIDIA to release another cryptomining-crippled graphics card - and this time to try and do it right by not releasing a driver that unlocks that particular effort. The card is rumored for launch come May, though we've already seen an unprecedented number of delays for NVIDIA's new SKUs - a sign that there is indeed a problem in the upstream semiconductor offering field.

MSI Releases GeForce RTX 3080, RTX 3070 SUPRIM SE Models

MSI has added another pair of graphics cards to its RTX 30-series staple. After introducing a new pinnacle-tier brand in the form of the SUPRIM X, which packs what best engineering MSI's engineers can muster, the company has now launched SUPRIM SE versions of the RTX 3080 and RTX 3070 graphics cards. The difference is in the details: mainly, in the factory overclock and TDP. While the SUPRIM X cards feature MSI's highest TDP (280 W) and clocks (1920 MHz), the SUPRIM SE are much milder in those respects (240 W and 1785 MHz, respectively), while keeping MSI's SUPRIM cooler and power delivery design.

The lower clockspeeds probably signal slightly lower quality silicon than the one that goes into the SUPRIM X cards, but that also means lower pricing for essentially the same card. And who knows, you might be chosen by the silicon lottery should you choose this model's better-engineered innards compared to other MSI cards. Apparently, the cards are only available in some regional MSI websites, which may mean slow rollout to other markets, or their absence from their entirely.

TechPowerUp GPU-Z v2.38.0 Released

TechPowerUp today released the latest version of TechPowerUp GPU-Z, the popular graphics subsystem information and monitoring utility. With the latest version 2.38.0, we are introducing the ability to detect Resizable BAR support. GPU-Z can now tell whether Resizable BAR is supported, and if so, whether it is enabled. AMD refers to Resizable BAR as AMD Smart Access Memory, but it is a feature developed by the PCI-SIG, which lets your CPU see the entire video memory of your discrete graphics card as a single addressable block, rather than through 256 MB apertures. This feature has been found to improve performance in games that can take advantage of it. Resizable BAR status can now be viewed from the main tab, right next to the multi-GPU status.

The latest TechPowerUp GPU-Z also adds support for new and upcoming GPUs, including AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT, RX 6700, RX 6600 XT, RX 6600, and Ryzen "Lucienne" mobile processor iGPUs. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Memory-Modded with 16GB

PC enthusiast and overclocker VIK-on pulled off a daring memory chip mod on his Palit GeForce RTX 3070 GamingPro OC graphics card, swapping its 8 GB of 14 Gbps GDDR6 memory with 16 GB of it, using eight replacement 16 Gbit chips. The modded card is able to recognize the 16 GB of memory, is able to utilize it like other 16 GB graphics cards (such as the Radeon RX 6800), and is fairly stable with benchmarks and stress tests, although not initially stable. It did spring up some black-screens. VIK-on later discovered that locking the clock-speeds using EVGA Precision-X stabilizes the card, so it performs as expected.

The mod involves a physical replacement of the card's stock 8 Gbit memory chips with 16 Gbit ones; and shorting certain straps on the PCB that let it recognize the desired memory chip brand and density. After the mod, the GeForce driver and GPU-Z are able to read 16 GB of video memory, and the card is able to handle stress tests such as FurMark. The card was initially underperforming in 3DMark, putting out a TimeSpy score of just 8356 points; but following the clock-speed lock fix, is able to score around 13000 points. NVIDIA Announces New CMP Series Specifically Designed for Cryptocurrency Mining; Caps Mining Performance on RTX 3060

This is a big one: NVIDIA has officially announced a new family of products specifically designed to satiate the demand coming from cryptocurrency mining workloads and farms. At the same time, the company has announced that the RTX 3060 launch driver will include software limitations for cryptocurrency mining workloads specifically correlated with Ethereum mining, essentially halving the maximum theoretical hashrate that could be achieved from a purely hardware perspective. The new family of products, termed CMP (Crypto Mining Processor) series, will see its products under the HX branding, and will be available in four different tiers: 30HX, 40HX, 50HX and 90HX. These products will not have any display outputs, and therefore are not applicable for gaming scenarios.

NVIDIA's stance here is that their new product will bring some justice in the overall distribution of its GeForce graphics cards, which are marketed and meant for gaming workloads. The new cryptocurrency-geared series will be distributed by NVIDIA authorized partners in the form of ASUS, Colorful, EVGA, Gigabyte, MSI, Palit, and PC Partner (more may be added down the line). There is currently no information on what silicon actually powers these graphics cards; and of course, the success of this enterprise depends on A) the driver restrictions not being limited to the RTX 3060 graphics card - it isn't clear from NVIDIA's press release if other RTX 30-series graphics cards will see the same performance cap. Even if NVIDIA did release those drivers, however, cryptocurrency miners would just opt to, well, not update them. So it is possible that NVIDIA will release a revision of the RTX 3090, RTX 3080, RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 Ti with silicon enhancements that will only work with the latest GeForce drivers - after allowing the channels to move all of their existing, cryptocurrency-enabled stock.

ZOTAC Promotes Cryptocurrency Mining Farm via Twitter

ZOTAC's official Twitter channel has posted an image that promotes the usage of its graphics cards in mining environments. Under the caption "An army of #ZOTACGAMING GPU's hungry for coin!", the company posted an image of a cryptocurrency mining farm populated with its graphics cards. The usage of a gaming hashtag in the post just adds insult to injury, with the picture showcasing at least eight of its GeForce RTX 3070 Twin Edge graphics cards on mining duties.

Of course, for ZOTAC, its cards being re-purposed for mining isn't a make-it-or-break-it affair: the company makes money selling its products to gamers or miners alike. However, considering how global supply of the latest gaming-branded graphics cards has been constrained ever since the initial RTX 3000-series launch, it seems that this Tweet might have been a misstep on the company. It's bound to attract crosshairs towards a seemingly unjust distribution of graphics cards in the market, with several would-be users of their gaming-branded graphics cards being left out in the cold regarding the primary purpose these graphics cards are developed and marketed for: gaming. The company has in the meantime deleted the Tweet.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30-Series GPU Availability to Reportedly Worsen in Q1

The availability of NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 3000 series "Ampere" graphics cards has been a problem ever since it launched. High demand paired with insufficient supply has caused quite some disturbance in the supply chain and has caused the MSRP of the GPUs to increase. Firstly, we were promised that the situation would resolve around May when NVIDIA is expecting to match the supply with the demand. However, according to the recent report, that might not be the case. Alternate, a European retailer operating in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany, has spoken to NVIDIA about the supply of the GeForce RTX 3000 series Ampere graphics cards.

According to the retailer, the situation with the card is such that the availability is scarce. When it comes to the GeForce RTX 3090, there are very few deliveries, but only a few open orders. The RTX 3080 sees very few cards coming with many open orders. The RTX 3070 has few cards incoming, but few open orders. And last but not least, the RTX 3060 Ti has very few cards coming, and a moderately high amount of open orders. If you are aiming to buy a card, your best chances would be with RTX 3090 and RTX 3070, as they do not have such high demand. On the other hand, RTX 3080 and RTX 3060 Ti cards are almost impossible to source as they all have a big waiting list. Alternate says that they work on a "first in first out" principle of delivering cards to consumers, so if you are not on the list you are likely going to wait for even longer.

ASUS GeForce RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 Ti Megalodon Graphics Cards Pictured

ASUS is readying the new Megalodon line of graphics cards. Aesthetically, these cards bear some resemblance to the ROG Strix, but are likely slotted below even the TUF Gaming series, with metal cooler shrouds and back-plates making way for what appear to be plastic ones. The coolers still keep the Axial-Tech fans, which ventilate a lighter heatsink than the one found in the ROG Strix cards. The PCB appears to be similar to the company's DUAL series cards, with single 8-pin PCIe power inputs for the RTX 3060 Ti, and possibly additional connectors for the RTX 3070. It's very likely that ASUS is selling the Megalodon series only in the Chinese market.

Following ASUS' Lead, EVGA and ZOTAC Increase NVIDIA RTX 30-series Pricing

ASUS was the first AIC partner to announce that due to increased costs in procuring supplies and components for PC component manufacture, it would be increasing prices on its motherboards and graphics cards. That announcement from ASUS seems to have opened the floodgates on other manufacturers, as now both EVGA and ZOTAC have increased pricing for their graphics cards - specifically for NVIDIA's RTX 30-series.

EVGA took a similar approach to ASUS, and announced via its website the changes in pricing and their effective date - January 11th. The company's announcement (which you can read in full after the break) sees pricing increase at around $70 across the board of already-launched NVIDIA RTX 30-series graphics cards. The company will still honor users in the queue system for a new graphics card with the previous pricing structure, should their orders complete through April 16th.

NVIDIA Could Give a SUPER Overhaul to its GeForce RTX 3070 and RTX 3080 Graphics Cards

According to kopite7kimi, a famous leaker of information about NVIDIA graphics cards, we have some pieces of data about NVIDIA's plans to bring back its SUPER series of graphics cards. The SUPER graphics cards have first appeared in the GeForce RTX 2000 series "Turing" GPUs with GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER and RTX 2070 SUPER designs, after which RTX 2060 followed. Thanks to the source, we have information that NVIDIA plans to give its newest "Ampere" 3000 series of GeForce RTX GPUs a SUPER overhaul. Specifically, the company allegedly plans to introduce GeForce RTX 3070 SUPER and RTX 3080 SUPER SKUs to its offerings.

While there is no concrete information about the possible specifications of these cards, we can speculate that just like the previous SUPER upgrade, new cards would receive an upgrade in CUDA core count, and possibly a memory improvement. The last time a SUPER upgrade happened, NVIDIA just added more cores to the GPU and overclocked the GDDR6 memory and thus increased the memory bandwidth. We have to wait and see how the company plans to position these alleged cards and if we get them at all, so take this information with a grain of salt.

Lenovo Confirms Various Upcoming GeForce RTX 30-series SKUs

Lenovo may have inadvertently disclosed the existence of several upcoming GeForce RTX 30-series graphics cards. The Product Specifications Reference (PSREF) document for a certain Lenovo pre-built gaming desktop model, the Legion R5 28IMB05, lists out all its possible hardware options, covering CPU, graphics cards, and storage. The CPU options cover 10th Gen Core "Comet Lake-S" models that are already out; but things get interesting with the list of graphics options. In addition to certain RTX 20-series, and GTX 16-series SKUs, the list mentions certain RTX 30-series SKUs that haven't yet been announced by NVIDIA.

Among these unreleased GPUs are the GeForce RTX 3050, which is shown featuring 4 GB of GDDR6 memory; the GeForce RTX 3050 Ti with 6 GB of it; and the GeForce RTX 3060 (non-Ti) with 12 GB of it. The already-launched RTX 3070 also finds mention here. It's likely that these are OEM-exclusive SKUs, but if they're not, then we have our first look at how NVIDIA is handling product segmentation between the RTX 3050 Ti and the RTX 3060 (non-Ti), in a possible bid to avoid a repeat of the GTX 1060 3 GB vs. 6 GB confusion (where besides memory, the two SKUs also had different core-configurations). Based on the GA106 silicon, the GeForce RTX 3060 (non-Ti) is expected to feature a 192-bit wide GDDR6 memory interface, which it populates with 12 GB of memory.

Rumor: NVIDIA RTX 3080, 3070, 3060 Mobile Specifications Detailed

Apparently, specifications for NVIDIA's upcoming RTX 30-series mobile solutions have been made public. According to Videocardz via Notebookcheck, NVIDIA will introduce three mobile versions of their RTX 30-series graphics cards in the form of the RTX 3080, RTX 3070 and RTX 3060. Like past NVIDIA mobile solutions, these won't directly correspond, hardware-wise, to their desktop counterparts; NVIDIA has the habit of downgrading their mobile solutions' chips compared to their desktop counterparts. According to the leaked specifications, this means the mobile RTX 3080 will maker use of the company's GA-104 chip, instead of the GA-102 silicon found on desktop versions of the card.

The mobile RTX 3080 should thus feature a total of 6,144 CUDA cores, as present in the fully-enabled GA-104 chip (compare that to the 5,888 CUDA cores available on the desktop RTX 3070, and the 8,704 CUDA cores available on the RTX 3080). These CUDA cores would be clocked at up to 1.7 GHz. The memory bus should also see a cut down to 256-bit, which would allow NVIDIA to distribute as many as 4 versions of the RTX 3080 mobile: Max-Q (TGP 80-90 W), Max-P (TGP 115-150 W), with either 8 GB or 16 GB of GDDR6 memory. The RTX 3070 mobile keeps the GA-104 chip, 256-bit bus and GDDR6 memory subsystem (apparently with only 8 GB memory pool available), but further cuts down CUDA cores to 5,120 (Max-Q TGP 80-90 W, Max-P TGP 115-150 W). Finally, the RTX 3060 mobile should make use of the GA106 chip, set up with 3,072 available CUDA cores and a 192-bit memory bus across its 6 GB of GDDR6 VRAM pool (Max-Q TGP 60-70 W), Max-P (TGP 80-115 W). Expect these specs to be confirmed (or not) come January 12th.

ZOTAC Releases GeForce RTX 30-series PGF Graphics Cards in China

ZOTAC has had a rather spartan custom RTX 30-series lineup in the West, with only its Trinity, Twin-Edge, and Holo board designs covering the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 series. The company plans to change this, with the introduction of a better endowed custom board series, under the PGF series. ZOTAC debuted the PGF brand with the GeForce GTX 10-series "Pascal" family, mostly in the Greater China region, and targeted at enthusiasts. The RTX 20-series "Turing" didn't see PGF branded cards. It now makes a comeback with the RTX 30-series "Ampere." As with the older cards, these are being launched as China-exclusive. It remains to be seen if they reach Western markets.

Both cards feature a common board design with a large triple-slot, triple-fan cooling solution that's dunked in RGB LED embellishments. Both cards feature exotic VRM components such as multi-phase capacitors for better electrical noise suppression. The RTX 3080 PGF comes with GPU Boost frequencies of 1770 MHz (vs. 1710 MHz reference), while the RTX 3090 PGF does 1755 MHz GPU Boost (vs. 1695 MHz reference). The RTX 3070 PGF runs up to 1785 MHz GPU Boost (vs. 1725 MHz reference), and there's even an RTX 3060 Ti PGF, doing 1725 MHz GPU Boost (vs. 1665 MHz reference).

ASUS Gives GeForce RTX 3070 the Turbo Lateral Blower Treatment

ASUS today rolled out the GeForce RTX 3070 Turbo graphics card. Given that the company built lateral-airflow coolers for even the 350 W RTX 3090, such a card based on the RTX 3070 should come as little surprise. ASUS designs these cards for cases with airflow restrictions. The card is strictly 2 slots thick and full-height. It uses a lateral blower-type cooling solution that uses a vapor-chamber plate and a copper channel-type heatsink; and a lateral fan that uses double-ball bearing. The card draws power from a pair of 8-pin PCIe power connectors located along the tail end, rather than on the top. The card sticks to NVIDIA-reference clock speeds of up to 1725 MHz GPU Boost, and 14 Gbps (GDDR6-effective) memory; although a software-activated "OC Mode" can run it up to 1755 MHz. Display outputs include three DisplayPort 1.4a, and one HDMI 2.1 connectors. The company didn't reveal pricing or availability information.

ASUS Intros ROG Strix White Variants of its GeForce RTX 30-series Graphics Cards

ASUS today introduced White variants of its Republic of Gamers (ROG) Strix custom-design GeForce RTX 30-series graphics cards. These card have essentially the same board design as the original ROG Strix RTX 30-series, but with streaks of matte-white and brushed-metal making up the cooler shrouds, back-plates, and impellers of the three Axial-Tech fans. The PCB underneath is still black. The RGB LED embellishments are identical to those on the original ROG Strix cards. The cards also feature the same factory-overclocked speeds as their original-design siblings.

Among the variants ASUS is launching are the ROG-STRIX-RTX3090-O24G-WHITE and ROG-STRIX-RTX3090-24G-WHITE, based on the RTX 3090; ROG-STRIX-RTX3080-O10G-WHITE and ROG-STRIX-RTX3080-10G-WHITE based on the RTX 3080; and ROG-STRIX-RTX3070-O8G-WHITE and ROG-STRIX-RTX3070-8G-WHITE, based on the RTX 3070. The company didn't reveal pricing, although we expect these cards to be priced at a slight premium over the original ROG Strix RTX 30-series.
