Crucial RealSSD C300 128 GB SATA 6 Gb/s Review

Introduction

Crucial Logo

Crucial is a division of Micron who are one of the biggest flash chip manufacturers on the planet. Their RealSSD C300 is a welcome change from all the Sandforce based drives that are currently on the market. Compared to these drives, the C300 has a major unique selling point: SATA 6 Gb/s support (some people might call it SATA III, but the correct name is SATA 6 Gb/s). This review has two major questions to answer: How does the Marvell 88SS9174-BJP2 SSD controller compare to the Sandforce 1222 and how well does SATA 6 Gb/s support work and is it worth the added cost for motherboard/controller card.

Crucial's drive comes in a reasonably sized generic package that does the job of protecting the SSD during shipping. The back has some technical detail, the included installation manual is a nice treat to guide less experienced users.
