A closer look

The Igloo 5750 Silent is made from a mix of both aluminum and copper. The base and heat pipes of the cooler are all nickel plated to achieve a consistent silver colour as well as to prevent oxidation. The four nickel coated, copper heat pipes reside on only one side of the cooler; they are not split up between both sides. On the other side of the cooler there is just an empty space, which leaves nothing to support the top of the cooler other than the four heat pipes. Between the dual 90 mm fans is an array of aluminium fins, which are used to dissipate heat transferred from the heat pipes. The two fans are only attached via four screws each, so they can be replaced very easily. Towards the bottom of the heatsink is a second array of fins. This block is a lot smaller but is made of nickel plated copper.

The cooler has a standard 3 pin power connector which can be plugged straight into the motherboard. Many motherboards contain software which can control fan speeds when plugged in via this three pin connection.

The heat pipes are made of pure copper, yet feature a nickel plated coating. Towards the bottom of the heatsink, the pipes run straight through the actual base and partially through the block of fins. This allows the heat from the CPU to transfer straight into the heat pipes and into the upper end of the heatsink, where the dual fans and aluminium fins dissipate this heat. Towards the upper end of the cooler, the pipes run through the centre of the aluminium fins to allow heat to be transferred evenly among the entire block of fins. Also to note, on both the lower and upper end of the cooler, the pipes run straight through the aluminium/copper blocks and are capped off on the other side, which again, allows maximum heat transfer.

The base, like the heat pipes, is made of pure copper but has a nickel plate coating on it. Glacialtech have included a pre-applied thermal compound which enhances the simplicity of installing the Igloo 5750. Just above the copper base is a small copper heatsink with fins. This allows enhanced heat dissipation as heat can climb above the heat pipes or into this block of fins. The cooler also features pre-installed clips, which are identical to the Intel stock cooler clips. These clips are simply attached to the base via one screw each, so installing the AMD based clips is simply a matter of unscrewing the Intel clips and screwing in the AMD clips.
