Performance Summary with Multiple Clients »

Average Response Time

The average response time is the average amount of time a storage device takes to receive a data request, find the corresponding data, access it, and return the requested results. Response times depend on various factors, including network bandwidth, the number and type of data requests, the type and technical characteristics of a storage device, and the number of users that perform these data requests. The results below assume that the NAS is only accessed by a single user. Check the "Performance Summary with Multiple Clients" page for response times with multiple clients.

The highest response time was recorded with a single HDD while the lowest was recorded with two HDDs in a RAID 0 configuration.

Throughput

The following graph shows the overall throughput of the NAS in all the tests we conducted using the DiskSpd tool in an OLAP scenario with QD4.

Again, performance was at its lowest with a single disk, while we measured the highest throughput speed with RAID 0.

IOPs

The next graph shows the recorded IOPs in all tests we conducted using the DiskSpd tool in an OLTP scenario with QD4.

With one of our Shuttle clients PCs, transferring data to and from the NAS had the number of IOPs reach 750, while it dropped to around 50 IOPs per client with seven connected clients.

Performance Summary - Internal & External Storage

This graph shows the NAS server's overall performance in the tests we conducted using our custom-made software.

The difference between open and encrypted file transfers was significant even though Synology stated the SOC to include a hardware encryption engine. If there were a hardware engine, the difference would be much smaller.

Performance Comparison Graphs

Let's now compare the performance of the DS416 to that of other NAS devices.

Overall performance was decent, but we would like to see even higher speeds, especially with encrypted files.
