The quad-core Celeron CPU supports Intel's AES-NI instruction set, so it will fare well with encrypted data transfers. The embedded GPU integrates a hardware transcoding engine, which means this NAS is capable of handling up to 4k resolution media. 4 GB of memory are installed, and you can easily upgrade this total to 8 GB, which is the maximum the J3455 supports.

If you use 12 TB disks and a JBOD configuration, the maximum storage capacity can reach up to 48 TB (before formatting). Thanks to the eSATA port, the DS918+ can also be connected to a Synology expansion unit for a total of 108 TB of raw capacity. For those of you who need a NAS for security reasons as well, the DS918+ supports up to 40 camera channels of which two are free. You will have to buy the other camera channel licenses from Synology if you need more.

A pretty strong power brick accompanies the NAS, and Synology provides some low power consumption numbers, which we will verify with our equipment. Finally, the provided warranty is three years, and the price tag is quite stiff; however, never forget that its price also covers Synology's support and a part of DSM's development cost, and it is a good OS. People usually believe that only the hardware matters, and that the provided software is to be had for free, but that couldn't be further from the truth.
