Introduction

Westone is well known for their premium universal in-ears. It all started back in the day with the release of the highly regarded UM1 & 2 universal fit in-ears. The two driver design was quite a feat back then when most in-ear manufacturers were having trouble controlling one balanced armature per earpiece. Last year Westone finally released their long awaited Westone 3 in-ears which as the name suggests houses a total of three balanced armatures, our review here.

This time around we will be taking a look at the Westone 4s which are the first universal fit in-ear that accommodates four balanced armatures hooked up to a three way cross over. The visual design of the Westone 4s is apart from the logo exactly the same as that of the Westone 3s. Internally they are totally different beasts. The Westone 4s use a newly designed three way cross over, and the four drivers are configured the following way: dual low, single mid, single high.

This is slightly different than their premium ES5 custom in-ears which shocked the headphone scene by having two mid and high range drivers and just a single bass unit.

These new in-ears will retail at $449 which is quite a high asking price for a set of universal in-ears. We put them to the test and see if they are really worth the price premium over the Westone 3s.

The Package

The Westone 4 in-ears ship in a little cardboard box that allows you to inspect the earphones for damage without breaking any seals at all.


Westone supplies a brilliant bundle that both features a volume adjuster, a cleaning tool, and a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter.


The carrying pouch has undergone a massive makeover. The Westone 4 in-ears ship with this durable box shaped pouch. The new carrying pouch seems sturdier than the old one and is perhaps easier to pack as well because you can actually put stuff on top without breaking what is in it unlike the old soft pouch.
