Samsung Develops USB-Powered 18.5-inch Display

Samsung hit a new "low" in terms of monitor power consumption, and developed an 18.5" display that draws all its power from USB ports. The new yet to be named display was shown off at the SID 2010 event. The 18.5" display uses a TN-film panel with a native resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, 250 cd/m² maximum brightness, 1,000:1 contrast ratio, and LED backlit illumination. The panel needs just 6.3W of power, which it draws from two USB 2.0 ports. It also draws display connection from one of the two USB ports. Samsung's USB-only LED-lit LCD displays will debut in 2011.

6.3w is easy if they use those high power LEDs.
A CREE R2 puts out 114 lumen at 350mA or 100 lumen per watt. but of course the quality of light is horrid to say the least.

Sweet, one less thing to plug in. But how does it get its display connection from USB? Surely there are plenty of drawbacks from that.

Guess the next model will be USB3. since a USB3.0 port will give it a lot more power (maybe it will only requier 1 cable to power it) and a lot more bandwidth. ( maybe thats why the resolution is so low? lack of bandwidth?)

A cool idea. Especially for people, who use their laptops at home and want to get more desktop real-estate. But I don't think that USB 2.0 will cut it though.

1366 Wide * 768 High * 60Hz Refresh (presumably) * 24bit colour (remember 32bit isn't sent to screen) = 1510686720 / 8 bits per byte / 1024 B per KB / 1024 KB per MB = 180MB/s is required to run this. USB2.0 is 480Mbits or 60MB/s. It must be USB 3.0 becauseI can't see how it would work properly if it was only USB2.0. But anyways I still don't see how a screen can be only USB anyways. It would put a huge strain on the CPU making it send the information that GPU would normally send to the DVI/HDMI/DP out the USB. It must have HDMI or DVI or something.

monitors already exist on USB 2.0 at this res, they just use compression. They arent designed for gaming or HD movie watching, they're designed for low performance stuff.

I know that USB3.0 gives a higher data transfer rate, but does it give more power? Could they be using that instead?

Sure this MUST be USB3... maybe my calcs are off but Mr Ohm tells me that usb2 can't supply enough watts...

You're right on that. USB 2.0 is rated for 500mA. 500mA * 5V = 2.5W Max. Even as it said it uses two usb plugs for powering it, that's still only 5W.
