Apple Readies New iMac Desktops for Q3-2015

Apple is readying a new generation of iMac desktops, which it plans to launch in Q3-2015, likely at its September press event. The new Macs are expected to come with faster processors (likely Intel "Skylake,") faster DDR4 memory, and an increase in display resolutions across the board, including a 21.5-inch model with 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160 pixels) resolution, besides its 27-inch 5K (5120 x 2880 pixels) model. The display panels in these macs will feature a new LED phosphor material called KSF (K2SiF6:Mn), which improves color saturation. The displays will offer 30-bit (10 bpc) color depth, with the ability to produce 1.07 billion colors.

And in Q4 2015...Apple addresses all the complaints of overheating and fried GPUs in their new iMac line :D.

Its coming...one of the certainties of life is that Apple computers will break down within two years if not sooner. Cheap Chinese parts and case designs made for looks but not cooling ftw!

Such a far cry from the golden age of Apple where their machines would still be working a decade later.

For what it's mean for (not gaming machine), Skylake iGPU could run 4K - it's about on the level of lowest end GeForce/Radeon.

Anyway, welcome back! TPU is not funny without you. :)

Everything up to GT X40 (GT640, GT740 etc.) coupled with DDR3 performs worse/at par with an Intel iGPU at this point in time. In the mobile market/ low profile market I mean. I don't defend Intel, but it is what it is.

If they start putting GT740/730 with DDR5 in ultra slim systems that would definitelly be better than iGPU, but as of this particular line of Apple they are not.

Welcome back, I didn't know you were missing in action for some time. But now that I think of it, haven't seen you in a while :)

Have either of you ever used a machine that has Iris Pro in it? Just wondering.

This. I think the power of Iris Pro is vastly understated. I get a MacBook Pro from work and it has a retina display 2880x1800, and an Iris Pro in it. I have played 4k video on it (attached to a 4k display,) and it has zero issues with it. My only qualm is that in multi-monitor it's a little lacking on power. If you take the concern of games out of the picture, 99% of the time the Iris Pro isn't going to fail you. I just wanted to throw that out there because I've been pleasantly surprised at what it can do. That by no means says that I think the price is worth it, I do think that Iris Pro is adequate for most purposes though.

Also, increased bandwidth of DDR4 is bound to improve iGPU performance not to mention all of the improvements to the iGPU that are already being made going forward. So we're talking about an Iris Pro that's faster than current Iris Pros. Once again, probably not worth the price but is adequate for most people.

you mean AMD? the first 5k imac could only be done with AMD's custom DP adjustments

what ARE you talking about, EVERYTHING is cheap chinese parts, why would it break down if it's low power... it's going to survive much better than some teenager's laptop that has its vents covered from the bed sheet
