Oculus to Begin Taking Pre-orders for the Oculus Rift CV1 on January 6

Oculus, makers of the popular Oculus Rift VR HMD, announced that it will open the gates for pre-orders for its upcoming Rift CV1 HMD on the 6th of January, 2016, at 08:00 Pacific Time. You'll be able to take it for a spin right out of the box, on the bundled games Lucky's Tale, and EVE: Valkyrie, two games built almost entirely around VR, by leveraging the Oculus SDK.

2016 is shaping up to be the year VR takes off in a big scale, with consumer electronics giants planning to launch their VR headsets; game developers building their games around major VR SDKs, and graphics hardware companies like AMD and NVIDIA making major moves in the VR industry. AMD is sitting on a treasure-chest of IP with its LiquidVR technology, while NVIDIA recently announced a VR-ready certification program.

75Hz refresh rate on these things... I would rather piss glass. Not to mention most graphics cards can't keep it there either.

You will need a beefy one for that and most can't afford those to start with.

Last I checked the recommended system specs were i5 + GTX 970. Nothing too high all things considered.

Really 75Hz? Where did you get this number? Isn't it 90Hz for consumer version?

I have spent hours wearing DK2. No problems whatsoever. I know that it depends on the individual, but oculus rift is very close to nailing the VR.

No, it's not. That's the recommended requirements. Minimum requirements can be seen on their main site, but most tech outlets published the "recommended" requirements months ago, revealed as the i5 and GTX 970.

"To be fair, this is the recommended spec "for the full Rift experience," so you'll likely be able to get away with something a bit lower on the scale."

Then you deserve the sub-par performance you will get from your device; I can't even count the number anymore of how many "recommended" specs fell short, because they always do.

*Edit*

To clarify a bit more, everyone's "recommended spec" is just enough to run a game, not on Ultra. As for the minimum spec, it is just enough to run a thing and at crappy levels at that. I can already see when things are put on ultra how everything falls short of that 75Hz, which will make people have headaches as well perhaps motion sickness with the urge to vomit.

Get over it already, the same shit happened many years ago when people were buying Track IR's, in the end they get used to it. If you don't you should know within 30 days so they should simply take it back and deal with it.

At a guess about $350-$450, would not be surprised if it was not higher. Still early for the tech and if you want value for money wait until their are more games that support it and the by then the dust will of settled.

My PC has enough processing power. One GTX 980 per eye, but Guru3D reports the price of the Oculus Rift CV1 to be $599(USD) which means it'll be around $1200 for New Zealanders. I'll wait for the competition.

Fascinating. The pricing is all out of whack with exchange rates, but in a good way for us. $700(NZD) is still a steep price for something that relies on PC grunt to do the work, but if the reviews are good I'll get one.

I'll be keeping an eye on pricespy.


update: $900(NZD) That doesn't include shipping and GST. So about $1200(NZD).
I'll wait for the competition.

To me this is perfectly logical.

Required: Running the game at low settings (with decent frames). The low settings are there for a reason, and it's partly why we are the PC master race.
Recommended: Running the game on pretty good settings, though not maxed out. You get most of the eye candy though.

@$599 I will hold off on buying this and wait for consumer reviews. Originally they were hinting at $400 or so. That would have been more acceptable but at $600 I want to know what I'm buying is worth it. And no I do not want to buy it, use it and return it within 30 days. I'll let everyone else do that.

TBH I'm more interested in the Sony VR system. I have the cash to buy the Oculus and I might get it eventually once there is enough support for it and everyone claims it's the bees knees.
