Music industry will drop DRM's, or find reasonable alternative

We can safely say that DRM's, short for Digital Right Management files, have basically failed to do their intended purpose. Instead of thwarting pirates, they have angered users, prompted DRM cracks, and unleashed a rash of other nasty side effects. During the Music 2.0 conference in Los Angeles, the leaders of the music industry concurred that DRM's are a bad way to go. The majority of speakers declared a need to either drop DRM completely, or at least enable interoperability between all legal music download services. Yahoo is already ahead of the competition in this regard, and has been offering DRM free files alongside DRM filled ones for a while with surprising results. Yahoo's success has prompted other music companies to pre-announce the offering of DRM free files alongside DRM filled ones.

Bad title. In no place in the video did he say that the music industry will do anything. He's just saying DRM is bad and microsoft shouldn't use it.

i dont play lockdown anymore cause i cant rip an iso of it... because of starforce...:mad:

I didn't say Starforce was good, just better than most of the others in use today. I don't care how hard a protection scheme is to break. Actually, the fact that you can't make an ISO of a Starforce game means that it is actually pretty decent at doing what it is designed to do. It is actually one of the harder protection types to break, and is very good at what it is designed to do, which is part of the reason it is better than the other ones. They are all bad, just as DRM is bad. They cause more problems then they solve, and aren't really a good solution. They cause too much hassle for the people that actualy buy the game, and it isn't really that hard to bypass for the people that don't buy the game.

maybe i worded it wrong, lol. i can rip an iso, but starforce detects its not actually the disk, and wont let me play...
and this has to be the first thing i agree with you on...:toast:

I really hope this works out. DRM is no substitute for legitimacy and self restraint....


But I actually think there would be the same amount or less pirating without DRM, it really doesn't stop many people.

I agree. Things will be pirated one way or another. DRM only serves as a headache to the people that actually purchased their things legally.

when i was using xp,i used to play starforcre games from an image mounted on my alc120% virtual drive.they all worked.

good riddance I say. ultimately industries have to accept that nomatter what "protection" software they emply, as longs there are good hackers in the world all the industries attempts are ultimately in vain. stop the bitching i say, remove protection software, save the masses of money spent on it and focus more on delivering cheaper games - which will ultimately appeal more.

maybe someone should start a vista SP1 thread where ppl can request things SP1 should include such as a drm remover and vistas resource hogging issues addressed (as is supposed to be) and if it grows big enough, someone sends it to M$
