New PS2 in the Works

According to gaming magazine MCV, Sony could be planning a new even-more-slimline version of its popular PlayStation 2 console. The new PS2 would retail for $99 compared to $129 of the current slimline, with the main change being that the often-criticised power block on the slimline would be integrated into the main body of the machine. The new console is expected to be launched in early 2008 - looks like Sony isn't planning to let go of the PS2's success just yet.

lol I pitty the exec in Sony who came up with this idea. I pitty even more then fool who'd actually waste money buying a new ps2 when the PS3 is right in the middle of clawing back sales.

well i guess thats why theres such things as price fixing for european consumers....... they gotta get their money from somewhere so why not some nice fat wallet'd Britons

The only thing I could even think about the reasoning behind Sony doing this is compact for the road. Make it easier for parents to take it on travels in the cars with their kids... That, or they just want the money. money, money money..... MONEY!!

none offense to people who liked the ps2 but i hope it dies it kinda converted EA to the darkside i mean before ps2 EA was great and had original games now im afraid a Fifa rehash or a few Ned for speeds wont do, and all this buying up decent developers wont help save EA it only makes decent developers turn crap.

I hated the slim ps2 it sucked after a while my cousins power connector wouldnt sit in the ps2 right and had to be jiggled to power the ps2 now it has to have a plug sat on it to keep the cable in place not to mention the heating problems and the fact it crashes sometimes for no reason.

Nobody will buy this ps2 will they i mean GOd of war and MEtal gear solid is about the only games i can think of that were any decent. Not to mention the lack of new ps2 games coming out that arnt FIFA or some EA rehash or psp port.

Even though people think this is a stupid idea, just think about this really quick.
The PS3 has a new 40GB out (the 60 and 80GB are phased out).
However, the 40GB versions cannot play PS2 games (not backwards compatible).
So why not offer a cheaper PS2 so people can play them.

So the 80GB version of the PS3 was $500 - 600 and didnt sell well.
The 40GB version is $400 and then some may buy the PS2 $100 = $500.
This would make the PS3 more marketable at a cheaper price.
This would also somewhat silence those who want backwards compatability since the PS2 is even cheaper now.

Honestly, it isnt that bad of a move by Sony and I know people will def. buy it.
People waste money of stupid stuff all the time.

No upscaling :D

But I see your point. And it's nice for those who want perfect compatibility and/or the consoles split for different TV's.

Yea people like me lol besides, like one of the previous guys said, it makes it easier for me to travel with it, since I'll be traveling a lot with my new job in about 6 months. The PS2 Slim right now is still kind of big to me. Something like the PSP is great for now. It's something to do you know.. :D

LoL! Sony, how about you spend some time imporving the PoS3? All of us who bought those sons of bitches are watching them collect dust while we use our Xbox360s, Wiis, and PCs.

i would buy one to replace my currrent ps2 (original launch model). that way i could have more room in my entertainment center for another console, or at elast more breathing room for my other components.

Its sony's way at letting people still have their Ps2. Yeah, not a lot of people will be buying in to this. And, whats the reasons behind this? Sony looks at it like this, from what I think, you have people that can only get something for their kids, and this is a cheap way to do it. A lot of parents aren't allowing their YOUNG kids to get videogame systems because of the fact that the games now cost so damn much. So, a cheaper Ps2 and the games being at so little price now, its easy to see why to do it. They are looking at the Family on this. The YOUNGER family. Or that Is what I am thinking

I think it's great! There are some nice games for the PS2 (especially if you aren't afraid of wierd imports..) and it's cheap and moddable. I've been looking for a PS2 for a while now just because it's good. You get a DVD and a game machine and if you know what you're doing you have a HDD as well.

Also, not everyone can afford the PS3.. The rent for my appartment for 2 months is cheaper than the PS3..

Great Idea, be a bit more considerate guys... I thought the current slimline PS2 was already... as slim as the PS2 could go... but I was wrong. Maybe they are using the PSP's hardware in the PS2 as it IS as fast at the same clockspeed. The only reason why the PSP is more expensive is thanks to the screen and battery, etc.

jocksteelukdoes sony still make ps2 games?
Of course. PS2 games will not die any time soon. Is Sony still making PS1 games? I'm unsure about that. But PS2 games, you bet. That also is why they're releasing the new model.

160 new PS2 games before March, the PS2 is cheap as chips to make, it's an inexpensive console, which still has quite possibly the best games in teh world evar! and also the most unique and original ones too (Okami for example, amazing game)
Sony also had a 10-year plan for the PS2, and if the sales this christmas of the PS2 are anything like last year's, it'll be the best selling console of the holidays. It's a reat first console, intuitive controls, great design, the slimline fits into such tight spaces, and can go completely unnoticed.

And there's the fact that the shitty PS3 doesn't do backwards compatibility, either properly, or at all, in the case of the 40Gig (and the fact there's SOFTWARE emulation in the Euro ones, that's just a kick in the teeth).
I'm never getting rid of my PS2, it's my fave console.

They've simply reduced the size of the manufacturing process on the PS2 internals. They did so a few months ago already, but they kept the same case, saving money. The PS2 is quite possibly the most successful games console because of this. Sony has been making so much money, since, like I said, it's still bought in massive numbers around the world, and the cost of making it is tiny.
It's not like the PS3 or Xbox 360, they're not making money for the companies, they're actually LOSING money by selling them, since they're so expensive to make.
I'm nto sure about the Wii, but that's probably raking in cash too, it's a simple machine to make, jsut an overclocked Gamecube at heart, heheh.

Just look at hardware/software sales. PS2 is nowhere close to dying.
120-130 million sold consoles worldwide speak for itself :)

but why sony why! you have a new PS3 to promote and sell to make up the R+D cost you had to make so you go and release a new PS2 - that i guess will eventually stop having games ported to it. this makes no sense!!!!!!!
Damn sonys logic
