Kingston Out With 256 GB DataTraveller USB Flash Drive

Kingston Technology today announced its new high-capacity USB flash drive, the DataTraveller 300 (model: DT300/256GB), which packs a massive 256 GB of data in a pocketable package measuring 70.68 x 16.90 x 22.99 mm (as big as a typical flash drive, nearly twice as thick). The package design is cap-less, with the USB connector popping-out at the push of a slider. The drive offers read speeds of 20 MB/s, and writes data at 10 MB/s. The company packs its own data-encryption software to protect data. The drive supports Windows ReadyBoost technology on Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems. Backed by a 5-year company warranty, Kingston is selling the DT300/256GB for 775 Euro.

lets do some math...

256GB * 1000 (decimal GB's) 256,000MB
at 10MB/s that wil take 25,600 seconds to fill, also known as 426 minutes, aka 7.1 hours.
SEVEN HOURS to fill a flash drive. with its 20MB/s read speed, 3.5 hours to read everything off it.


With the price and the performance, i dont see a point for this.

I can see a use for it. I send alot of stuff to Greenland. Atm im using the 32gig kingston sticks, but a 256gig would be way more awesome! oh, and alot cheaper! i have to pay just about 30$ for every package i send - and thats only 1 stick! A small harddrive would cost atleast 100$, cause i need to send it as a box. So yeah, there is a niche market for stuff like this ;)

Sure there is. But it costs $0.08\mb - and thats after already paying $80 for a 2mbit connection. So its alot cheaper just to send stuff from denmark in a letter ;)

i post an 8GB flash drive between myself and my brother across state. When you have download limits (like say, most of the world), its wasteful to download more than once, when you can get it posted to you by a friend/family instead.

And no, we dont have an option to pay more to get more.

They're amazing. So small and cheap. You could buy 18 1TB HDDs for the same price as this retarded thing. :p
