nvidia had a massive design failure, their cards use too much power, put out too much heat, and are too expensive to make. They arent even worth considering these days.
That's a massive exaggeration. While I would get an HD 5850 if in the market for a new card right now, Nvidia or ATI depends on your priorities, hardware, case and cooling solution (among other things). If I have a full tower with great airflow, wasn't concerned about power consumption and wanted a balls-out, best performance in its class single GPU I'd get a GTX 480.
