Sharkoon Announces Vertical Docking Station for SATA Hard Drives

Sharkoon presents two external hard drive docking stations for the USB3.0 interface, in which unobstructed SATA hard drives can be quickly and without effort connected to a computer or notebook. The two Sharkoon Vertical Docking USB3.0 stations, with a choice of either one or two fast-swap bays for SATA hard drives in 3.5 inch format, are equipped internally with a SATA II interface and externally with a USB3.0 SuperSpeed interface.

The disks are easily inserted upright lengthwise into the hard drive bay. A lockable front flap secures the drives against unwanted access while a rear fan helps prevent unwanted heat. The Sharkoon Vertical Docking Single USB3.0 Station with its hard drive bay and 40 mm fan measures 212 x 44 x 129 mm (L x W x H) and weighs 650 g. The Sharkoon Vertical Docking Duo USB3.0 Station with its two individually lockable hard drive bays and 50 mm fan measures 222 x 83 x 134 mm (L x W x H) and weighs 860 g.

ORICO Intros 6518 Series Slide-in HDD Dock

ORICO introduced the 6518 series HDD dock that lets you snap in 3.5-inch (or smaller) SATA hard drives or solid-state drives, and connect them to a host over a choice of USB 3.0 or SATA 3 Gb/s interfaces. The enclosure is bus-powered when connected via USB, and needs an external DC power input when connected via eSATA. The body of the 6518 is made of ABS plastic, and is available in jet-black and silver color options. The dock provides basic power and activity indicators. ORICO did not reveal pricing or availability information.

Sharkoon 3-in-1 QuickPort with eSATA, USB3.0 Now Comes with FireWire

Sharkoon is expanding their range of "QuickPort" docking stations: The Sharkoon SATA QuickPort U3 FireWire is a true all-round talent in terms of fast data transfer and connectivity diversity. The hard drive adapter not only supports the eponymous FireWire standard, but with USB3.0 and eSATA also two other external interface standards. With the additional FireWire port Sharkoon now especially appeals to the Mac community, since their Apple devices primarily use a FireWire interface.

The new QuickPort model also provides three IEEE-1394 ports: one for the older 1394a standard (FireWire 400) and two for the faster 1394b standard (FireWire 800). The appropriate connection cables for all available ports are enclosed. The internal SATA interface supports the SATA standards 1.5 Gb/s to 6 Gb/s.

Century Intros 12.5 mm-thick 2.5-inch Drive Dock

Century Japan released a new drive dock (model: CMRK-S4) for PCs with vacant 5.25-inch drive bays, which provides four 2.5-inch SATA hot-swap drive bays, supporting drives as thick as 12.5 mm (such as WD VelociRaptor without its heatsink, or Seagate Cheetah. The four bays have lockable caddies. Since this is a passive dock, the SATA connections are relayed to the back. The four bays are cooled by a 40 mm exhaust fan on the back. The fan spins at speeds of around 4,000 RPM, with noise output around 25 dBA. Measuring 145.7 x 149.3 x 41.6 mm (WxDxH), the dock weighs 500 g, owing to its mostly metallic built. Slated for early August, it is expected to be priced at 3,980 JPY (US $50).

ORICO Readies Dock for Ultrabook and MacBook Air

ORICO is working on a new line of slimline docks for Intel Ultrabook and Apple MacBook Air, which expand USB connectivity and provide an additional display output. Available in carbon black and white, the docks include a USB 3.0 hub with as many as five downstream USB 3.0 ports, a DisplayLink video adapter with DVI and HDMI output, and a gigabit Ethernet interface. The dock probably includes NAS functionality with mass storage devices attached to its USB ports. On top of all these, the dock includes fans to let it perform its primary function of cooling the Ultrabook or MacBook Air.

ORICO Rolls Out USB 3.0/eSATA Quad-Bay SATA Drive Dock

ORICO has taken the HDD dock to another level by releasing a model that not only supports up to four drives but also includes two speedy connectivity options - USB 3.0 (5.0 Gbps) and eSATA (3.0 Gbps). This quad-bay dock measures 142 x 217 x 80 mm, it weights 964 grams, has hot swap capabilities, and offers support for 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch SATA drives with capacities of up to 3 TB.

Century Intros mini2 KD25/35MS2 Triple-SATA Mini-Dock with Copy/Erase Functions

Century unveiled the mini2 KD25/35MS2 triple-SATA mini-dock. It is a box measuring 136 x 84 x 26 mm, weighing 430 g, which has three SATA 6 Gb/s (power and data) interfaces on three of its sides, which attach three HDDs/SSDs. The device can perform disk cloning, copying of specific partitions (logical drives), specific files, and secure DoD-grade erase functions, without the need of a host PC. Slated for early May, the KD25/35MS2 is priced at 29,800 JPY (US $371).

Century Tech of Japan introduced a new SATA HDD/SSD cloning dock with a snap-on design (model: CRAS2U3CP). The dock allows you to quickly clone a SATA HDD/SSD without needing a host machine, as well as connect any two SATA drives to a host machine over USB 3.0 interface, as USB Mass Storage devices, with transfer rates of up to 200 MB/s. The top of the unit has a row of LEDs that displays the progress of disk cloning. When not connected to a host over USB, the device requires power drawn from an AC adapter. Measuring 70 x 16 x 65 mm (WxDxH), it weighs about 55 g, and can be carried around in a small pouch. Slated for next week, the CRAS2U3CP from Century is priced at 4,980 JPY (US $61).
