NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti Gets Custom 890 Watt XOC BIOS

Extreme overclocking is an enthusiast discipline where overclockers try to push their hardware to extreme limits. Combining powerful cooling solutions like liquid nitrogen (LN2), which reaches sub-zero temperatures alongside modified hardware, the silicon can output tremendous power. Today, we are witnessing a custom XOC (eXtreme OverClocking) BIOS for the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti graphics card that can push the GA102 SKU to impressive 890 Watts of power, representing almost a two-fold increase to the stock TDP. Enthusiasts pursuing large frequencies with their RTX 3090 Ti are likely users of this XOC BIOS. However, most likely, we will see GALAX HOF or EVGA KINGPIN cards with dual 16-pin power connectors utilize this.

As shown below, MEGAsizeGPU, the creator of this BIOS, managed to push his ASUS GeForce RTX 3090 Ti TUF with XOC BIOS to 615 Watts, so KINGPIN and HOF designs will have to be used to draw all the possible heat. The XOC BIOS was uploaded to our VGA BIOS database, however, caution is advised as this can break your graphics card.

AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT Drops Below $1000-mark For the First Time

AMD's current-gen flagship graphics card, the Radeon RX 6900 XT, can be had for as low as $949, with US retailer Newegg listing a GIGABYTE RX 6900 XT Gaming OC graphics card at that price. This can be further lowered to $899 by availing Newegg's mail-in rebate. The GIGABYTE RX 6900 XT Gaming OC is the company's value-ended custom-design RX 6900 XT product positioned a notch below the company's AORUS Master card, but is still factory-overclocked, with its cooler posting lower temperatures than the reference-design. Catch our review of this card.

A drop in the pricing of the RX 6900 XT means that AMD's new RX 6950 XT could be right around the corner, with some sources claiming the card to match up to the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti, NVIDIA's fastest graphics card from this generation. The RX 6900 XT is still a mighty fast graphics card, trading blows with the RTX 3080 Ti.

Update May 5th: The price is up slightly to $999 ($949 with MIR), our assessment still holds.

AMD Radeon RX 6950XT Beats GeForce RTX 3090 Ti in 3DMark TimeSpy

We are nearing the arrival of AMD's Radeon RX 6x50XT graphics card refresh series, and benchmarks are starting to appear. Today, we received a 3DMark TimeSpy benchmark of the AMD Radeon RX 6950XT GPU and compared it to existing solutions. More notably, we compared it to NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 3090 Ti and came to a surprise. The Radeon RX 6950XT GPU scored 22209 points in the 3DMark TimeSpy test and looking at Graphics score, while the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti GPU scored 20855 points in the same test. Of course, we have to account that 3DMark TimeSpy is a synthetic benchmark and tends to perform very well on AMD RDNA2 hardware, so we have to wait and see for official independent testing like TechPowerUp's reviews.

AMD Radeon RX 6950XT card was tested with Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU paired with DDR4-3600 memory and pre-released 22.10-220411n drivers on Windows 10. We could experience higher graphics scores with final drivers and see better performance of the upcoming refreshed SKUs.

NVIDIA RTX 40-series "Ada" GPUs to Stick to PCI-Express Gen 4

NVIDIA's next-generation GeForce "Ada" graphics architecture may stick to PCI-Express 4.0 as its system bus interface, according to kopite7kimi, a reliable source with NVIDIA leaks. This is unlike Ada's sister-architecture for compute, "Hopper," which leverages PCI-Express 5.0 in its AIC form-factor cards, for its shared memory pools and other resource-sharing features similar to CXL. This would make Ada the second graphics architecture from NVIDIA to use PCIe Gen 4, after the current-gen "Ampere." The previous-gen "Turing" used PCIe Gen 3. PCI-Express 4.0 x16 offers 32 GB/s per-direction bandwidth, and NVIDIA has implemented the Resizable-BAR feature with "Ampere," which lets the system see the entire dedicated video memory as one addressable block, rather than through tiny 256 MB apertures.

Despite using PCI-Express 4.0 for its host interface, GeForce "Ada" graphics cards are expected to extensively use the ATX 3.0 spec 16-pin power connector that the company debuted with the RTX 3090 Ti, particularly with higher-end GPUs that have typical board power above 225 W. The 16-pin connector is being marketed as a "PCIe Gen 5" generation standard, particularly by PSU manufacturers cashing in on early-adopter demand. All eyes are now on AMD's RDNA3 graphics architecture, on whether it's first to market with PCI-Express Gen 5, the way RDNA (RX 5000 series) was with PCIe Gen 4. The decision to stick with PCIe Gen 4 is particularly interesting given that Microsoft DirectStorage may gain use in the coming years, something that is expected to strain the system bus for the GPU, as SSD I/O transfer-rates increase with M.2 PCIe Gen 5 SSDs.

NVIDIA RTX 3090 Ti Memory Overclocked to 24.6 Gbps, Yielding 1.18 TB/s Bandwidth

The 21 Gbps-rated GDDR6X memory chips powering the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti really like to overclock. During our testing, we've seen these things reach as high as 1500 MHz (real clock), or 24 Gbps. Tweaktown, in the course of their crypto-mining performance testing of the RTX 3090 Ti, has managed to set a memory clock record, reaching as high as 1538 MHz, or 24.6 Gbps, which works out to a staggering 1181 GB/s memory bandwidth. 24.6 Gbps, VideoCardz notes, is higher than even the rumored 24 Gbps memory clock speed of the RTX 4090, the next-generation flagship powered by the Ada Lovelace graphics architecture. Armed with blistering memory speeds and larger on-die caches, the memory sub-system is poised to once again be a major contributor to the RTX 40-series generational performance uplift. Tweaktown set its RTX 3090 Ti memory OC feat with an MSI RTX 3090 Ti SUPRIM X graphics card.

Next-gen NVIDIA "Ada" GPUs to Possibly Use 21 Gbps Memory

Everyone's favorite GPU-news leaker Kopite7kimi has updated his tweet from April 1 with more specific board part numbers, and suddenly the information contained there—which could have been misinterpreted as an April 1st joke—now all seems to add up with our own posting from last month about memory bus widths. The update seems to indicate the boards will now feature 21 Gbps memory, which is the same as what we saw on the recently made available RTX 3090 Ti cards, and Videocardz goes further to speculate the 3090 Ti could have been a dry run for the upcoming cards, including with a similar 600 W TDP rating to follow. Note also that the leaker is shying away from referring to these as the RTX 4080/4090 series, leaving room in case NVIDIA decides to jump in naming scheme for reasons including marketing and what the competition decides.

First Game Test With the Ryzen 7 5800X3D Appears as Promised

XanxoGaming has now posted its first game benchmark with the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, paired with a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Founders Edition. They put it up against an Intel Core i9-12900KS and Core i9-12900K. However, as you might have deduced from the headline of this news post, so far, they've only run a single game, but are promising to deliver more results shortly. That single game so far is Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 720p and using low settings, which means that this is a far cry from a real world scenario, but it does at least give a first taste of what's to come. For whatever reason, the Core i9 systems are using an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti and the CPUs are paired with DDR5 memory rated at 4800 MHz CAS 40. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D has been given another pair of 8 GB modules, so it's now using dual rank memory, but still at 3200 MHz and CAS 14.

In their test, the Core i9-12900K averages around 190 FPS, which they place as their baseline. The Core i9-12900KS manages around 200 FPS, or a bit over a five percent improvement. These benchmark numbers are provided by CapFrameX that claims that due to the low resolution used, the GPU doesn't really matter and although it's not an apples-to-apples comparison, it's very close. So what about the Ryzen 7 5800X3D? Well, it gets an average FPS number of 231, which is a bit odd, since the Intel CPU benchmarks are rounded and the AMD ones are not. Regardless, that's over a 20 percent increase over the Core i9-12900K and over 15 percent of the Core i9-12900KS. XanxoGaming is promising more benchmarks and those will be delivered at 1080p at Ultra settings according to the publication. In other words, this is still not what most of us have been waiting for.

GALAX GeForce RTX 3090 Ti HOF OCLab Edition PCB Pictured

Here are some of the first pictures of the drool-worthy GALAX GeForce RTX 3090 Ti Hall of Fame (HOF) OCLab Edition graphics card, courtesy of Duck OC. This is the first production graphics card to feature two ATX 3.0 16-pin power connectors, each capable of delivering 600 W of power. The card's power limit out of the box is reportedly as high as 516 W, and as we've discussed in an older article, the decision to go with a dual 16-pin connector setup may have to do with limited availability of PSUs with 16-pin connectors, and enthusiasts relying on the NVIDIA-designed adapter that converts three 8-pin PCIe power connectors to a 16-pin, for a maximum power of "just" 450 W.

The RTX 3090 Ti HOF OCLab Edition sticks to the long tradition of GALAX HOF graphics cards with white PCBs, with plenty of overclocker-relevant features such as consolidated voltage measurement points, a decluttered component layout for volt-modding, anti-condensation surface-treatments on the PCB, dual-BIOS, and lots more. The card features a 28-phase VRM, with 24 phases for the GPU, and 4 phases for the memory. The OCLab Edition SKU in particular comes with an included full-coverage water block sourced from Bitspower. The block features nickel-plated copper as its primary material, and a clear-acrylic top that's studded with addressable-RGB LEDs. There's also an air-cooled variant of this card, but it lacks the OCLab tuning.

ZOTAC Intros RTX 3090 Ti PGF OC Graphics Card in China

The Chinese market gets the very best of ZOTAC, with the company launching its flagship GeForce RTX 3090 Ti graphics card there, the RTX 3090 Ti PGF OC. This card is designed to be a tiny notch above the AMP Extreme Holo, and features the company's most elaborate-looking cooling solution. The card ships with the a factory-overclock of 1890 MHz boost—same as the AMP Extreme Holo—and its maximum available power limit is the same, at 495 W.

It's also likely that the PGF OC and the international AMP Extreme Holo share an identical PCB design, and the heatsink design appears similar, too. What's new is the cooler-shroud and back-plate design, which looks better thought-out than the AMP Extreme Holo: there's no hollow space toward the tail-end of the card for aesthetic reasons, with the shroud ending roughly where the heatsink does; and the backplate has a huge round vent that can take advantage of the large cutout in the PCB. The AMP Extreme Holo backplate doesn't fully take advantage of this cutout. The RGB lighting is also nicely done, across the front-face of the cooler shroud.

GALAX RTX 3090 Ti HOF First Graphics Card with Dual 16-pin Connectors (1200W Input Capability)

The GeForce RTX 3090 Ti debuted the new ATX 16-pin power connector for graphics cards, which minimize the cable clutter in your case, while meeting the growing power demands of graphics cards as Moore's Law buckles. During our reviews of the RTX 3090 Ti, we noticed that a handful graphics card PCBs had provision for a second 16-pin connector (implying that the first one with a maximum of 600 W of power delivery is maxed out).

GALAX debuted the first graphics card with two 16-pin connectors, a theoretical power input capability of a whopping 1200 W. At first we thought this is an exercise in absurdity, until we took a close look at our numbers again. Currently, ATX 3.0 PSUs with 16-pin connectors are extremely rare, and so every NVIDIA board partner is required to include an NVIDIA-developed adapter that converts three 8-pin PCIe power connectors to one 16-pin. Three 8-pin connectors only add up to 450 W, whereas in our testing we noticed that some of the cards were peaking well beyond 450 W, despite using this adapter.
