IRDM Introduces a new PCIe M.2 NVMe SSD drive for the PS5 Console

The European brand expands its portfolio of PCIe Gen 4 x4 SSDs in M.2 format with a model dedicated to the PS 5 console. It is the IRDM PRO SLIM - ideal not only for gamers, but also professionals and enthusiasts.

The IRDM PRO SLIM is a twin model of the IRDM PRO M.2 SSD. Unlike its predecessor, the new drive is offered without a heatsink, making it 100% compliant with Sony's requirements for PlayStation 5 console drives. The technical parameters speak in favour of choosing an SSD from a European manufacturer. Maximum read and write speeds are 7000/6850 MB/s, respectively. Today, Kioxia Corporation, a world leader in memory solutions, announced that its PCIe 4.0 NVMe and SAS SSDs have been successfully tested for compatibility and interoperability with Microchip Technology Inc. ("Microchip's") Adaptec HBA 1200 Series, SmartHBA 2200 Series host bus adapters (HBAs) and SmartRAID 3200 Series RAID adapters.

As one of the broadest portfolios of SSDs in the industry, KIOXIA drives are available for client PCs, as well as data center, hyperscale and enterprise servers and storage systems. KIOXIA CD6, CD8, and CM6 Series PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs and KIOXIA PM6 and PM7 Series 24G SAS SSDs all successfully completed compatibility testing performed by Microchip.

SK hynix Begins Mass Production of Industry's Highest 238-Layer 4D NAND

SK hynix Inc. announced today that it has started mass production of its 238-layer 4D NAND Flash memory, following the development in August 2022, and that product compatibility test with a global smartphone manufacturer is underway. "SK hynix has developed solution products for smartphones and client SSDs which are used as PC storage devices, adopting the 238-layer NAND technology, and has moved into mass production in May," the company said. "Given that the company secured world-class competitiveness in price, performance and quality for both 238-layer NAND and the previous generation 176-layer NAND, we expect these products to drive earnings improvement in the second half of the year."

The 238-layer product - the smallest NAND in size - has a 34% higher manufacturing efficiency compared to the previous generation of 176-layer, resulting in a significant improvement in cost competitiveness. Besides, with a data-transfer speed of 2.4 Gb per second, a 50% increase from the previous generation, and approximately 20% increase in read and write speed, the company is confident that it will be able to deliver an improved performance to the smartphone and PC customers using this technology.

Tyan Showcases Density With Updated AMD EPYC 2U Server Lineup

Tyan, subsidary of MiTAC, showed off their new range of AMD EPYC based servers with a distinct focus on compute density. These included new introductions to their Transport lineup of configurable servers which now host EPYC 9004 "Genoa" series processors with up to 96-cores each. The new additions come as 2U servers each with a different specialty focus. First up is the Transport SX TN85-B8261, aimed squarely at HPC and AI/ML deployment, with support for up to dual 96-Core EPYC "Genoa" processors, 3 TB of registered ECC DDR5-4800, dual 10GbE via an Intel x550-AT2 as well as 1GbE for IPMI, six PCI-E Gen 5 x16 slots with support for four GPGPUs for ML/HPC compute, and eight NVMe drives at the front of the chassis. An optional more storage focused configuration if you choose not to install GPUs is to have 24 total NVMe SSDs at the front soaking up the 96 lanes of PCI-E.

Team Group Unveils Several T-Create Series Memory Products for Creators at Computex

Team Group's T-Create line of memory products is targeted squarely at content creators, and characterized by their slender, sober product design. The company unveiled several new products in this brand, spanning from DDR5 PC memory to portable SSDs, docking stations, USB flash drives, and even memory cards. On the memory front, Team Group showed us both standard-size DDR5 DIMMs for desktops, and SO-DIMMs meant for laptops. A simple matte-black heat spreader dons the desktop variant. The desktop DDR5 module comes in speed-based variants spanning between DDR5-6000 and DDR5-6800, while the SO-DIMMs come in DDR5-5200 to DDR5-5600. What's interesting is that both come in high-capacity variants, with the desktop T-Create DDR5 coming in 64 GB (2x 32 GB) to 128 GB (2x 64 GB), while the SO-DIMMs come in 16 GB thru 64 GB kit sizes.

The company also showed off a plethora of new storage products, beginning with the T-Create Classic TC-200 NFC, and the larger T-Create Expert USB4. The TC-200 has a USB 3.2x2 type-C interface that's capable of 20 Gbps interface speed, which it uses to offer sequential transfer rates of up to 2 GB/s reads/writes. It also integrates an NFC reader, so it can be locked and unlocked using smartcards or mobile applications running on NFC-capable smartphones. This drive comes in capacities of 500 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB. The larger T-Create Expert USB4, as its name suggests, features a 40 Gbps USB 4.0 type-C interface, and an impressive 4 GB/s maximum sequential transfer speed. Rounding things off in the PC storage space is the T-Create Classic M.2 docking station. This looks a lot like a cylindrical water cooling reservoir, except you pop in an M.2 NVMe SSD. Don't add water.

Team Group Shows Off Gen 5 NVMe SSD with AIO Cooling, and T-Force Z5 Gen 5 SSDs

A trend we've seen in the 2023 Computex is that SSD manufacturers aren't advertising their feisty Gen 5 NVMe SSDs with the elaborate cooling solutions that they sorely need, but rather as bare drives, with the cooling options marketed separately. In practice, manufacturers could get retailers to bundle Gen 5 SSDs with a selection of their coolers. This lets them trim some of the criticism of just how hot SSDs have gotten over just one generation. Team Group showed off its T-Force Cardea Z5 lines of M.2 Gen 5 NVMe SSDs. There are two distinct lines with the same names. One of these comes with a maximum sequential read speed of 12 GB/s, while the other comes with 14 GB/s. Both have their respective 1 TB, 2 TB, and 4 TB capacity variants. Both use 3D TLC NAND flash. The under-the-hood difference between the 12 GB/s and 14 GB/s versions of the Cardea Z5 is that while the 12 GB/s variant uses a Phison E26-series controller, the 14 GB/s one uses an InnoGrit IG5666 controller. Team Group intends to eventually re-brand the 14 GB/s variant as the Cardea Z54A series.

Team Group also announced a handful cooling solutions to pair with these Gen 5 SSDs. The most striking of these is the T-Force Siren, an all-in-one (AIO) closed loop liquid M.2 NVMe SSD cooler, with as 120 mm radiator. The name is a bit of a misnomer, as SSD coolers with 20 mm fans is what a siren might sound like. Obviously, this cooler is overkill, and helps the SSD deliver its best performance, but there are other options from the company. The T-Force AirFlow I uses two copper heatpipes that run through the base-plate, pulling heat from the controller, NAND flash, and DRAM, and pushing it through an aluminium fin-stack arranged vertically. This is then ventilated by a 30 mm fan. The T-Force Airflow II uses a slightly different approach, with a single thicker heat pipe arranged in a C-shape, with radially-projecting finnage that have the appearance of a cylinder. At the other end of this is a 30 mm fan.

A Stroll Through Acer Memory and Storage Products at Computex 2023

PC OEM giant Acer has a growing lineup of retail channel PC products, including DIY enthusiast PC hardware under its Predator brand. The company showed some of this off at the 2023 Computex, in a booth organized by its memory products OEM BIWIN. First up, we have the Predator Hermes RGB line of high-end DDR5 memory kits. These feature elaborate aluminium heatspreaders with RGB LED illumination. We caught one of these in action, with a multi-zone RGB lighting. The Hermes RGB comes in 32 GB (2x 16 GB), and 64 GB (2x 32 GB) kits, and in speeds of DDR5-6800, DDR5-7200, DDR5-7600, DDR5-7800, and DDR5-8000, with CAS latencies ranging between 32 to 36T, and module voltages between 1.40 V to 1.45 V.

Among the consumer storage products showed off by the company include the MSC300 line of UHS-I microSDXC cards capable of 160 MB/s sequential speeds, which comes in capacities ranging between 32 GB to 256 GB. Among the SSD products shown were stuff we are already familiar with, including the FA100 Gen 4 NVMe SSD, RE100 Gen 3 NVMe SSD, the SA100 and RE100 SATA 6 Gbps SSDs; the SD100 lines of DDR4 and DDR5 SO-DIMM memory for laptops; CFE100 line of CFexpress cards, and and handful USB flash drives (UFDs).

PNY Shows Off M.2 SSD Heatsink with Two Fans and RGB Bling

PNY at the 2023 Computex, showed off an M.2-2280 SSD cooling solution with nor one, but two fans, in what is a sign of things to come with upcoming PCIe Gen 5 NVMe SSDs. The cooler features an extruded aluminium monoblock heatsink with a pair of 20 mm fans at its two ends. The central portion of the cooler has the bulk of its aluminium fins. A top-plate has an RGB illuminated, stylized PNY logo, which can be synchronized with the lighting of your PNY XLR8 Verto EPIC-X graphics cards. It's smarter on PNY's part to market the cooler as a separate product, than part of any upcoming PCIe Gen 5 SSD.

Kioxia to Showcase New Consumer SSDs Delivering PCIe 4.0 Performance at COMPUTEX

Kioxia Corporation, a world leader in memory solutions, today announced new consumer SSDs scheduled to be released in the third quarter of 2023. The EXCERIA PLUS G3 Series will leverage PCIe 4.0 technology and offer up to 2 terabytes (TB) of capacity. Crucial T700 Gen 5 SSD Throttles Down to HDD Performance Levels Without a Cooler

Crucial T700, the company's flagship M.2 NVMe Gen 5 SSD, runs hot—like every other drive based on the Phison E26-series controller (such as the Corsair MP700). ComputerBase.de discovered what the drive does without some sort of cooling. The E26 controller has a Tjmax value of around 86°C, and what happens when it's reached depends on the drive in question. The Corsair MP700 can turn itself off to protect the controller—something that will definitely cause your machine to hang with a BSOD.

The Crucial T700, on the other hand, aggressively throttles down the controller in an attempt to lower temperatures. While the drive won't stop (and your machine won't hang), its performance drops to hard drive levels, with CrystalDiskMark (CDM) measurements pointing to around 101 MB/s (of course, with much lower access times than a HDD). Both Crucial and Corsair offer the drive with large heatsinks, and recommend users to use them. This should severely limit the adoption of Gen 5 NVMe SSDs among notebooks, where the notebook chassis has room for only bare drives. However, some OEMs specializing in larger high-end gaming notebooks and desktop-replacement workstations, can find ways to connect the drives to the notebook's main cooling system using flattened heatpipes. Report: DRAM and NAND Flash Prices Expected to Fall Further in 2Q23 Due to Weak Server Shipments and High Inventory Levels

TrendForce's latest research indicates that, as production cuts to DRAM and NAND Flash have not kept pace with weakening demand, the ASP of some products is expected to decline further in 2Q23. DRAM prices are projected to fall 13~18%; NAND Flash is expected to fall between 8~13%.

TrendForce reports that the significant drop in DRAM prices was mostly attributed to high inventory levels of DDR4 and LPDDR5 as PC DRAM, server DRAM, and mobile DRAM collectively account for over 85% of DRAM consumption. Meanwhile, the market share for DDR5 remains relatively low.

Can You Build an Operable PC in 37 Minutes? The Neo Forza & Newegg PC Building Event Winner Just Did

The Newegg PC Building Contest finals were held in Taipei, on April 22nd. This isn't a typical e-sports event, or even an overclocking/benchmarking contest, but one with a very simple premise—build an operable PC using the parts of your choice, within a time-limit. The finals saw the top-5 contestants from a pool of 50 make their way to Taipei, and for the final event, the time set was just 1 hour. That seems like an eternity for someone used to building PCs, but this isn't a mom-and-pop Dell you're building—a fully fledged high-end gaming desktop with certain mandatory components to have (although the choice of make of the components is up to you). You're supposed to assemble the desktop and bring it up to an operable state.

Neo Forza became the DDR5 memory and SSD manufacturer of choice for most of the finalists. Three out of five finalists chose Neo Forza Trinity DDR5-7200 memory, and all five of them chose Neo Forza NFP455 NVMe Gen 4 SSD. While the winner put together the build in 37 minutes, the slowest of the five made it in just under the hour. They stated that the build was "stressful" and they never thought it could get so nerve-racking to put together a simple PC. Meanwhile, Neo Forza celebrated its unexpected claim to fame for being the memory vendor of choice among the finalists. "We were humbly overwhelmed as the event, inadvertently, showed Neo Forza as a preferred choice by experienced pro-users for DRAM and SSD in PC builds suitable for gaming, content-creation, streaming and 3D rendering," the company commented.

ASUS Launches ExpertCenter PN53 Powered by AMD Ryzen 7000 Series Processors

ASUS today announced ExpertCenter PN53, a mini PC that harnesses the power of the latest AMD Ryzen 7000 series processors and AMD Radeon 600M series graphics. ExpertCenter PN53 features a triple-storage design that can accommodate a variety of storage combinations. Two PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSDs and DDR5 memory ensure fast boot-up and app loading times.
