Acer Launches Affordable 4K 150 Hz Gaming Monitor

When it comes to affordable gaming monitors, Acer tends to be one of the main contenders among the well known brands out there and its latest addition is a 4K model with 150 Hz refresh rate. The Acer Nitro XV282K V3 is an updated version of a model that's been available for a few years now and although Acer didn't do any major changes to the overall specs, apart from that extra 6 Hz on the refresh rate, the company has dropped the MSRP by over half, making the Nitro XV282K V3 something of a bargain.

Feature wise we're looking at a 28-inch IPS panel with HDR 400 support and a 1 ms GTG response time. The panel is a typical 8-bit panel with FRC support for 10-bit dithering with a 1000:1 contrast ratio and a DCI-P3 colour gamut of 90 percent. It also has AMD FreeSync Premium support with a VRR range of 48 to 150 Hz. The port selection consists of one DP 1.4 and two HDMI 2.1 ports and should also feature some kind of USB inputs and outputs, but Acer didn't bother adding those to its website. That said, the older model had both a USB Type-C and Type-B input, as well as four USB-A outputs, so hopefully this was carried over to the updated model. There's also a height adjustable stand with tilt and pivot support. With a US$429.99 MSRP, it's likely that this could become one of the most affordable 4K gaming monitors out there.

GIGABYTE Outs M28U 4K Gaming Monitor with Integrated KVM

GIGABYTE released the M28U, a unique 28-inch 4K Ultra HD gaming monitor that comes with an integrated KVM feature. This lets you effectively switch between two PCs. Simply plug the PCs to the monitor's multiple display inputs; plug your keyboard, mouse, and USB headset to the monitor's downstream USB ports, and the monitor's two upstream USB connections to the two PCs (one of these is a USB-C). Switching between the two is as easy as pressing a button on the monitor. This will prove particularly useful if you have a personal desktop and a company laptop to use in your home office, and don't want to clutter the place or waste time plugging things in and out.

As a display, the M28U is no slouch, its 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160 pixels) IPS panel supports refresh rates of up to 144 Hz, 178°/178° viewing-angles, 300 cd/m² maximum brightness, DisplayHDR 400, and 1000:1 static contrast ratio. Display inputs include two HDMI 2.1, one DisplayPort 1.4, and USB-C. From these, the USB-C input supports not just USB for the second PC's input, but also DisplayPort passthrough. If your second PC lacks an all-powerful USB-C, simply use any other display input, the USB-C will only take in upstream USB (which you can adapt to a type-A USB 3.0 port). The downstream USB hub puts out three 5 Gbps USB 3.0 ports. The company didn't reveal pricing.

Microsoft Announces the Surface Studio - A 28-Inch AIO With Skylake and GTX 980M

At the 2016 annual Microsoft Surface Event, Microsoft's corporate vice president for Surface Computing Panos Panay announced a new addition to the company's Surface lineup: a 28-inch All-in-One, with a 3:2 aspect ratio monitor Microsoft calls a "Pixel Sense Display", packing a 4500x3000 resolution (with around 62% more pixels than 4K resolution, combining to provide about 192 pixels per inch), as well as 10-point touch and Microsoft Pen support.

All of that screen real-estate comes in at just 12.5mm thick - the AIO's innards are actually on the monitor's base, with an hinge that promises to allow the display to be moved seamlessly and in a wide variety of angles, as well as allowing it to take on extra weight in studio mode. All of this is powered by an Intel Skylake processor (configurable as an i5 or i7 model), your choice of an NVIDIA GTX 965 M 2GB or an NVIDIA GTX 980 M 4 GB model, 8 through 32 GB of DDR4 RAM, and a 1 TB or 2TB storage - with all configurable options also including in their base specs what Microsoft calls a "Rapid Hybrid Drive", which at the moment, remains unclear as to its nature of either a SATA or PCIe SSD, or even an SSHD.

ASUS Unveils the MG28UQ Ultra HD Monitor

ASUS unveiled the MG28UQ Ultra HD monitor. While it's not branded with the company's coveted Republic of Gamers (ROG) decals, the company is still positioning it as a product targeted at gamers. Perhaps the company decided to reserve ROG branding for displays with high refresh rates or adaptive-sync tech. The MG28UQ is a 28-inch display with a TN-film panel. Besides its native resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels, this panel serves up 10-bit color (1.07 billion colors), a response time as low as 1 ms, viewing angles of 170°/160° (H/V), 330 cd/m² maximum brightness, and dynamic mega-contrast.

Among its gamer-friendly features include a flicker-free LED backlighting, which doesn't rely on PWM to reduce brightness (and hence doesn't flicker), an OSD crosshair that's independent from the host input (useful in "hardcore" modes of online shooters that lack crosshairs), an OSD timer, frame-rate counter, and in-built display alignment. The GameVisuals feature serves up display settings presets that are optimal to the various gameplay types (FPS, RTS, Race sims, etc). The display also features TUV certification for low blue-light LED back-lighting. Display inputs include one HDMI 2.0, two HDMI 1.4a, and one DisplayPort 1.2. A 2-port USB 3.0 hub comes included. AMD Announces FreeSync, Promises Fluid Displays More Affordable than G-SYNC

AMD today officially announced FreeSync, an open-standard technology that makes video and games look more fluid on PC monitors, with fluctuating frame-rates. A logical next-step to V-Sync, and analogous in function to NVIDIA's proprietary G-SYNC technology, FreeSync is a dynamic display refresh-rate technology that lets monitors sync their refresh-rate to the frame-rate the GPU is able to put out, resulting in a fluid display output.

FreeSync is an evolution of V-Sync, a feature that syncs the frame-rate of the GPU to the display's refresh-rate, to prevent "frame tearing," when the frame-rate is higher than refresh-rate; but it is known to cause input-lag and stutter when the GPU is not able to keep up with refresh-rate. FreeSync works on both ends of the cable, keeping refresh-rate and frame-rates in sync, to fight both page-tearing and input-lag.

IFA takes place from 5 to 10 September in Berlin.

Shifting blue light toward the healthier end of the spectrum
With people spending more time than ever interacting with digital devices, continuous blue-light exposure through extended screen time poses a potential risk of long-term damage to eyesight. Making its debut appearance at IFA 2014, the brand-new Philips SoftBlue display reduces eye fatigue by eliminating emissions of blue light at harmful wavelengths, helping to mitigate the negative impact on eyes and improve well-being. Unlike software-based approaches, the SoftBlue display works using a new technology which changes the peak of the blue-chip in the LED. It does this without detracting from colour fidelity or brightness, so users can enjoy accustomed image quality without the prolonged detrimental effect of blue-light exposure.
