Dell today updated its premium XPS line of performance notebooks with the XPS 15 (9500) and XPS 17 (9700), as part of the company's Spring 2020 launch sequence. The two are primarily differentiated by screen size (15.6-inch vs. 17-inch). The XPS 15 comes with 16:10 resolutions of 4K UHD+ (3840 x 2400 pixels) InfinityEdge Touch, and WUXGA (1920 x 1200 pixels) InfinityEdge. Both offer Dolby Vision, and adjustable viewing angles. 10th gen Core "Comet Lake-H" processors power both.

Processor options include the Core i5-10300H, i7-10750H, i7-10875H, and i9-10885H. Memory options range between 8 GB single-channel thru 64 GB dual-channel. Graphics options start with GTX 1650 Ti for the XPS 15, and go up to RTX 2060 (mobile) for the XPS 17. Storage options only include NVMe SSDs, starting with 256 GB, and going all the way up to 1 TB. A star attraction with both is Thunderbolt 3 connectivity. The XPS 15 offers two Thunderbolt 3 ports; while the XPS 17 offers four. Killer AX1650 WLAN is standard issue.

It seems Dell is gearing up to refresh it's XPS 15 9500 and XPS 17 9700 laptops. A leaked image from the official Dell site first reported on by Notebook Check reveals the laptops will feature 16:10 3840x2400 displays, four USB-C ports likely with Thunderbolt 3 support, along with larger trackpads. There is no dedicated charging port so the laptop will likely use USB-PD for charging.

We don't know much more about the new machines but we can expect them to utilize Intel's recently released 10th Gen Comet Lake mobile chips paired with dedicated NVIDIA cards likely the 1650 Ti mobile at a minimum. It is likely that we will receive an official announcement from Dell announcing the laptops in the coming weeks.

IFA is the largest consumer tech show in Europe and we expect to see significant news from 4K and OLED TVs to wearables to smartphones. We'll be showcasing our latest PCs, of course, as the move to thin and light continues across the industry. It's not only about smaller form factors though - consumers want adaptive, always connected, high-performing, and flawlessly designed PCs. Dell continues to set the bar for the PC industry.

Ahead of IFA, we're expanding our consumer portfolio with brand new form factors and the addition of new 10th Gen Intel Core processors to our current XPS and Inspiron portfolio, delivering performance gains needed for compute intensive, demanding multi-thread workloads, while still handling 4K content efficiently. Intel announced that laptops verified through its innovation program, code-named "Project Athena," will feature the visual identifier "Engineered for Mobile Performance." PC manufacturers and retailers can use the identifier across promotional activities and in-store and online retail environments to draw consumers to the laptops that meet the high standards of the program's target specification and key experience indicators (KEI).

The new identifier can be found for the first time today with the new Dell XPS 13 2-in-1, one of the initial systems verified through Project Athena and now available for U.S. customers to purchase from Dell.com. Over the coming weeks, the identifier will also be visible in marketing efforts for the HP Elitebook 1040 and HP Elitebook 830, which are also among the initial laptops verified through the program. Additional laptops are expected from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Samsung for the holiday season.

Alienware has long been synonymous with custom-built gaming PCs and laptops, with appealing, exclusive designs that you can't find anywhere else and that boutique experience in tailoring your own machines. The company, however, seems to have plans to increase its hold in the PC gaming ecosystem by entering the PC components market, where gaming branding opportunities abound. Alienware already has an established foothold in the pre-built PC space, and it could always increase brand awareness even more not only by including Alienware-branded components on their machines, but by extending its presence onto other manufacturers' gaming PCs and components (read RAM, motherboards, graphics cards, standalone cases...).

Of course, Alienware will have to thread carefully, as already-entrenched manufacturers and suppliers have their heels well dug in the market - their brands already have strong market recognition and there are years and years of R&D poured into their solutions already. Frank Azor, Dell XPS General Manager, todl PC Games N that any foray into unknown markets has to be very well weighed in terms of investment and risk/benefit scenarios, while also adding that Alienware's brand identity wouldn't work with a simple rebrand of other company's solutions.

The new XPS 15 2-in-1 laptops from Dell employ Intel's 8th generation 'Kaby Lake-G' processors with Radeon RX Vega M GL discrete graphics which features 4GB of HMB2 memory. A 256GB M.2 PCIe SSD serves as the primary storage across all models. The Intel Core i7-8705G with 8GB of memory starts at $1,699.99 and the 16GB variant at $1,799.99. And lastly, the XPS 15 with an Intel Core i7-8705G processor, 16GB of memory, and a 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) goes for $2,199.99.

Dell consistently listed the XPS 15's memory as 'integrated'. After browsing through the service manual, we didn't find a section on replacing or upgrading the memory. Therefore, it's safe to say that the XPS 15 (9575) comes with memory soldered to the PCB. This shouldn't be a let down for most consumers as 16GB of RAM is more than sufficient by today's standards. However, prosumers might want to hold off for now until a 32GB SKU is released.

The XPS 8500 Desktop: Advanced Performance for Creatives

According to a fresh report, in Q2 Dell will be releasing a new XPS 15 laptop, one that makes use of Intel's 3rd generation Core processors (codename Ivy Bridge), has a chassis just 24.2 mm thick (down from 38 mm of the current XPS 15), and packs a 15.6-inch WLED-backlit Full HD (1920 x 1080) display protected by Gorilla Glass.

The upgraded XPS 15 is said to feature a Core i5-3210M or Core i7-3612M CPU, up to 16 GB of RAM, a 1 TB HDD or a 512 GB SSD, a GeForce GT 630M or GT 640M graphics card, a glass trackpad, a 3-in-1 card reader, USB 3.0 connectivity, Gigabit Ethernet, WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, and both HDMI and mini DisplayPort outputs. The laptop's release date and pricing scheme have yet to leak.

Dell has quietly listed a new desktop system on its site, the Dell Studio XPS 435. The slick, angled casing of Studio XPS 435 hides a 3.2 GHz Intel Core i7 965 Extreme Edition processor, an Intel X58 motherboard, up to 24 GB of 1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM working at triple-channel, ATI Radeon HD 4870 graphics card with 1 GB GDDR5 memory, up to 4.5 TB of storage and a Blu-Ray disc drive. As standard you get a Gigabit NIC, integrated 7.1 channel sound, 15-in-1 memory card reader, and eight USB 2.0 ports. If you want to go beyond that, there's an optional Creative X-Fi sound blaster, BOSE 2.1 sound system, and a wireless network card. The system is yet to be priced.
