Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion rating bumped from "Teen" to "Mature"

The highly anticipated fourth Elder Scrolls game has had its rating raised a level, to the surprise of many. Bethesda's new hit game now carries a "Mature" rating due to "more detailed depictions of blood and gore than were considered in the original rating", as well as the presence of topless character models, unlockable with 3rd party software. Similar to the "Hot Coffee" fiasco, a company has again come under fire for content inaccesible in the course of regular gameplay. Bethesda has yet to respond to any inquiry, but has taken steps to alert retailers of the new rating,, providing "M" rating stickers for units already marked "Teen". The two ESRB press releases can be found below.

it does get pathetic. murder, theft, senseless slaughter are all good. depicting violence is fine. poisoning people is fine. OMG BOOBIES! RATE IT HIGHER.

Methinks the people doing the ratings need to get a life.

Despite our governments best efforts, it would appear that nearly half of America is in possesion of boobies, and most the other half would like a pair to play with. What a degenerate land we live in. :D

so it get a rating bump because of third-party programes? so it means its not in the source code?

i know about this mod since i have it. what happened is that due to 'topless' clothes (like cloaks) with no shoulder straps, a texture was needed so that the shoulders/upper torso area looked right.

Again its totally bogus, because it can only be activated by modding teh game. on the Xbox version its not accesible, and on PC someone had to edit the files, turn it into a mod with the editor, then people have to download and install the mod.

If i get a V8 engine and stick it in my POS car, does the car manuf have to update its specs on how fast the car goes? no? well these rating dicks should stfu.

yeah the game is bomb... + you cant rate the game bassed on 3rd party mods that the average user wont even look at, cuz its not the game developing it, its other people, if they have to rate something, go out and rate the mods, but the game is a T game, its not like fear were you can blow off limbs (or just blow the person into blood)... its not a M game, but when does a label mean anymore, no one realy cares (unless its a protective parent)

for the record any game with character models can be modded. hell guildwars and WoW were main ones for a while but the rating never got bumped before. i think somone has a thing against the series. but as we have already proven ratings dont matter...

I have a real problem with the ESRB rating a game based on content not created, or content that was inaccessable by the developers. Naturally, gaming's biggest enemies latch onto this news and will argue that the ESRB is largely ineffective.

Did everyone forget about the other part about the rating change that was mentioned? "more detailed depictions of blood and gore than were considered in the original rating"

That is a good point, but did you read the statement from Bethesda? They released a partial quote of their ESRB rating evaluation, and made mention of the violence, gore, and scenes of torture. If the ESRB felt these warranted a "M" rating, why didn't they do so to being with? Let's be perfectly honest, the content in Oblivion isn't really that graphic.
