Internet Ineptitude

In a day and age when the mainstream media stands accused of spinning reality every bit as much as the citizen journalist, where lawyer's threatening emails fly to suppress the opinions of the public daily. The new line between the professional and the amateur is often the moral backbone to stand up and fight for their rights. Such is the case of Lance Dutson who has accused the Maine Office of Tourism and their advertising agency of Internet Ineptitude. The result is a litany of harassment, a 3 count multi-million dollar federal lawsuit, and the first Media Bloggers Association alert.

While many businesses have sought to harness word of mouth viral marketing, all too many resort to threats and legal intimidation when those efforts go astray or in this case are simply questioned. They take a gamble, will they cave and retract or have I just tried to douse the fire with 300 gallons of kerosene? The explosions are quite entertaining and colorful, they stretch around the world from blog to blog and news site to news site. Leaving a public relations disaster in their wake.

At the center of this case is the charge that the tourism campaign largely amounted to starting a bidding war with local Maine businesses for search engine pay-per-click placement. A real geek sees the flaw to this strategy immediately, traffic is generated not by ad dollars but by utility value, which then is voted on as traffic, links to your site from 3rd parties and a community of participants. The paid for ad placement pay-per-click has never held a candle to the real search returns and real utility value. The public is not stupid and exposure doesn't equate to value.

Rather then further develop a truly entertaining website and a helpful community of real people giving real advise, they have opted for a soulless repository of facts. Adopting an outmoded but lucrative advertising contract wherein they pocket commissions for "ad placement" to drive traffic and worse at the expense of their own constituents. Then fail to understand the new reality of the citizen journalist, often the source of both more intimate knowledge and thoughtful opinion than the mainstream press is comfortable with. Or just possibly, asking questions they think better left alone. In our best interests of course, we can't be trusted to weight the arguments ourselves.

Of the particulars of this case the courts will decide, but the main charge of "Internet Ineptitude" is self evident. Court's adjourned.Ice Czar is a reformed Spin Doctor and intimate of the advertising and marketing world for some 22 years.

UPDATE Warren Kremer Plano has withdrawn the lawsuit against Lance Dutson following a media blitz of bad press.
Bob Cox, Ron Coleman, and the Media Bloggers Association moves to a perfect 10-0 against this type of corporate bullying, and the world is now even more aware of the force that the blogosphere has become.
Meanwhile the political juggernaut is gearing up to determine what all the ruckus was about.
Maine State representative Stephen Bowen has called for a a full investigation into the management of both the Maine Office of Tourism (MOT) and the contractors it hires to produce tourism materials for the state. In addition, in a letter to state Economic and Community Development Commissioner Jack Cashman, Rep. Bowen called for the Maine Office of Tourism to suspend its contract with WKP, pending the results of the lawsuit.
Who knows they may actually learn something from all this, and Id just bet that all this bad press has in fact driven considerable traffic to the website, as they say any press is good press. :p

"The public is not stupid and exposure doesn't equate to value"

sadly i think where "spin" in general is concerned the above statement isnt true.. folks tend to believe what it suits em to believe and the palatable lie is far more likely to be acepted than the unpalatable truth..

spin is just a euphemism for lies.. but palatable lies seem to be what joe public wants.. so spin doctors oblige..

no honest politician would ever get elected and no honest salesman is ever gonna get rich... he he he

its just the way it is in cumsumer orientated democracy.. we live in a bullshit world where the "feel good" factor tends to cloud the truth..

even the internet is being taking over by the "spinners".. take a look at all the irritating add links in your own article..

You can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.

A cliche of course, but to get to be a widely distributed cliche generally requires a kernel of truth. I will not deny that spin has played a large part in the formation of most people's "worldview" and that in a disposable goods consumer society it fashions a constant siren song.

While most consumers have taken some of the message load to heart, they have also developed a mental "adblock" as well tied to relevancy, to their motivation. Thus all spin and little to no substance becomes a backlash. Vaporware. Dismissed as either irrelevant or of limited utility value.

www.visitmaine.com/home.php has a yearly budget of nearly 4 million dollars
(the ad agency's budget)
and the website has a decent utility value, if you are already predisposed to go to Maine. It contains a relatively sophisticated database but for instance you'd need to click through to any accommodation provider just to see what the place looks like. A considerable number of events, activities and regions are fairly well covered.

But other than planning a trip to Maine? Why would you come here in the first place?
Thats why traffic needs to be driven to it, as opposed to building a site that is both entertaining and community based.

There is no forum
where is the film section?
where is my virtual reality sailing tutorial?
where is my lobstercam? :p
and the rest of the webcams?
I want a bloody big wallpaper of that moose
I want to know the best Antiquing spots and I want to discuss the matter
damnit I want a real map
what is that big Fort in the middle of Casco Bay?
Where is the best bass fishing? mackerel? how about cod?
When is blueberry season and where is a good place to pick my own?
I want to go clam digging
Can I rent a canoe nearby?

In this age of YouTube, digital photography and instant communication
the site and its true utility power is untapped, it isn't a representation of what the experience and the people of Maine are like, it's nothing more than an animated brochure

It does not motivate, it simply catalogs. It does not lure or create traffic it must be driven to it. That is a fundamental flaw in this day and age and IMO a crime considering the resources they have available to them. But its also predictable of the Madison Avenue mindset and government. Its estimated they are dropping $7000 per month to drive traffic with pay-per-click

and yes Ive been to Maine (as a child), in fact one whole side of my family lives in Maine
and is an integral part of its history

"You can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time."

i think that one is %100 true..

but the spinners dont have to do either of the above.. its usually enough just to fool most of the people most of the time..

but dont let my jest detract from your main points which are quite valid..

Oh I agree most consumers will "fall" for a well crafted message and even adopt an underlying mindset loaded full of assumptions that if they thought about them a little more deeply they may question. But that doesn't mean they take the bait hook line and sinker, and they will indeed spit it back out if they find it unappetizing.

We all love to delude ourselves on one level or another and few examine their delusions
some are unaware, some are perfectly aware and prefer to not question.

This is a case of an Industry (major player of the advertising industry) as well a State government, deluding themselves, choosing not to reexamine their assumptions, and now having their noses rubbed in it. While most of the “news” service has been concentrating on the legal shenanigans from this little play, the original point has not been lost on those with the eyes to see.
