ATI Catalyst drivers slammed by 3D firm

According to The Inquirer, The firm 3D Nature, said in a announcement that ATI Catalyst OpenGL drivers are "unsuitable." 3D Nature continued saying "all past and current ATI Catalyst drivers for all ATI Radeon series display cards" have critical bugs that "render the hardware unusable". The Inquirer also said 3D Nature claimed ATI knew about these problems for over a year and has not acknowledged or made any attempt to fix the current problems.

and yet i could play doom3 on my old radeon 1300pro with no problems. though opengl is a problem for ati i think this is just a group of people just wanting attention.

Well its has always been a known fact Nvidia does OGL better than ATI but I never would have said it was "that bad" or unstable. I play the IL-2 Sturmovik Series which is fairly stressful(tho showing its age but still supported I might add with a new add on coming out last week) and I have never had any more issues with it than Nvidia users.

Who the hell is 3D nature? And why should their opinion matter?

I have used ATI cards and Catalyst drivers for several years and they have worked fine for me.

i doubt they're referring to games so much as professional applications, ie movie CGI and similar, which is virtually all OpenGL and utterly dominated by nVidia's quadro FX line. note how all the firms involved are photorealistic virtualisation ones, not EA games or vivendi.
3D Nature, a leader in photorealistic landscape visualization, together with a prominent group of 3D visualization developers and users, have taken the drastic step of publicly declaring ATI's Catalyst OpenGL display drivers as unsuitable for professional realtime visualization needs.

Ok I second this statement.

What kind of no-name 3D "company" jumps out of their hole and calls ATI drivers crap?
Seems to me some guy fried his ATI card and wanted to blame his/her mistake on something.

If the problem is so bad, how is it that they are the only ones complaining and saying they are unusable?

Sounds to me more like ignorant people that can't get things to work correctly so they decide to blame it on ATI's drivers and not their crappy coding.

way to read the article, guys. when openGL developers start bitching at ATi about it, guess whose fault it is.

But on the other hand, Nvidas DirectX implementation sucks compared with Ati. and as im a home gamer and not a pro graphic artist, ati is the clear winner for me ;) .

Chances are this topic is crap do to bugs in the 3d programs used from unknown 3d developers as apposed to ati's fault. Mabe if they used the proper FireGl drivers instead of the home catalyst drivers there wouldnt be an issue . All the big pro apps get by with no major issues.

here is the deal. ati cards are clearer, and ive seen nvidia's tat render the 64bit version of farcry. nvidia rendered an underwater kelp plant but it showed threw the water.. plus they said they used radeon drivers.. fireGL is ati's renderware card. not the 1800xt. thats like putting a ferrari engine in a pento and complaining it dont handle well. only problem ive had with catalist is driver versions nto mixing well if i swap out cards. but thats rarely anymore. and sense when did the opinion of a "firm" equate to anythign but crap. next they will form a band of developeds of air purifiers and say ati or nvidia dirty up the air and need a purifier on there cards..

for the lovers and haters, clans ati vs nvidia

after a bit of delving i found the post of the ati vs nvidia on the preformance and rendering of 64bit farcry. here it is..

www.firingsquad.com/hardware/far_cry_64-bit/

if you notice. ati's run at higher render levels or quality levels for short. this is the 850xt though. older review. still i consider the 850xt a good card. stil. a walking cow or whatever and a low poly truck. thats limp evidence. i think its a nvidia stunt more then likely. or they are partners/friends of nvidia. alot of critisism is coming ever sense they got that money from microsoft to make the xbox360 gpu. once that gpu hits the market.. expect nvidia to be a fish outa water.

3D Nature don't seem very 'professional' to me. Heck they can't even design a decent looking website. LOL!

pretty much everything, when catalyst are your drivers... the professional drivers and normal drivers aren't neccisarily worlds apart, especially when the hardware is virtually identical (on both sides of the fence). FireGLs are shit next to Quadros.

well plain and simple firegl cards will run on either firegl drivers or catalyst drivers. catalyst drivers are optimized for framerate and directx. firegl drivers are optimized for high quality graphic design such as what this firm says sucks on these cards. the firegl cards can be used in gaming but the pcb design is much more optimized for reliability and accuracy then just framerates...

i agree with you there kenny. fireGL is even sold under business. its use is for rendering.

Further, said 3D Nature, "all past and current ATI Catalyst drivers for all ATI Radeon series display cards" have critical bugs that "render the hardware unusable".

this is what im refurign to though. i mean. radeon series.. there not for real time rendering. i play hours of css, and all the other new games, like FEAR and Oblivion, and i get no render errors.

who knows. everyones on ATi's back lately. i heard when ati won the bid to make microsofts next gpu for the 360 they got a boatload of money and free rule over what to do design wise. and nvidia and im sure all there friends are upset cause of it. i got and idea lets protest microsoft for crappy coding.. my mechwarrior 3 dont work on xp.
