Socket AM2 Launch Date Confirmed

The availability of AMD's next-generation CPUs - the Turion 64 X2 mobile and Socket-AM2 processors - will still follow the chip vendor's May schedule, according to DigiTimes. AMD will launch the Turion 64 X2 mobile platform on May 17 and AM2-compatible processors on May 23. However, the mass production of DDR2 memory for AMD-based systems will begin some time in July or August, one to two months later than originally estimated.

DDR and DDR2 have their pros and cons. DDR2 might have faster speeds, but higher latency. DDR has slower speeds but lower latency.

AM2 will be great for new PCs, but for old AMD users not so much . . . If your itching to upgrade to a new platform and can turn off that excuse my language AMD Fanboyism that has spread wayyy to far, Conroe is a great option. Or you can wait at least 6 months for AM3.

Honestly I don't think it's intent was for a large performance boost. It was to phase out old DDR technology.

If you already have 939, I'd stick with it. Not worth it to change unless you need to build a new computer =D. I heard that the AM2 offered support for the future quad core which the controller of 939 didn't support. But since I already have dual core, I think I'm ready for multi threaded apps =D

AM2 might eventually end up a decent platform(worth upgrading to), depending if AMD will release some even better processors for it later on.

I'm gonna skip it though.
