NVIDIA Designs GeForce GTX 460

NVIDIA is said to be working on another GF100-based SKU, which further cuts down from the GeForce GTX 470. The new SKU, GeForce GTX 460, is expected to rival ATI Radeon HD 5850 in the sub-$300 market segment. The GF100 will be configured to have a 256-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, driving 1024 MB (1 GB) of memory. Clock speeds could be another thing NVIDIA uses as the determining factor. The GTX 460 will not have a reference design as such, and AIC partners will be allowed to release their own designs from day one. The new SKU is expected to release in June. Pictured below is the GTX 470 PCB.

EastCoasthandle1. No way a 460 should cost $300 and you want to brag that you got a 8800 GT fpr $215 :slap:
2. I'm talking about when they 1st released it along with it's limited availability. Here is a bit from the tabs of history
3. I believe it will and if they clock it up it probably will also be a hot, power hungry mess. But I'll wait and see :D
1. I meant the 470 should cost $300. And I did, from fry's when they first went on listing.

$379 on sale with a game, overclockable to at least 10-15% better performance to rival the 480 much lower power and temps, available.

So what is wrong with the 5870 again other than some spin?

Right now $419 with free shipping, or they just ran out of $394 with free shipping, lifetime warranty VisionTek cards. $414.99 with free shipping for a sapphire card with better cooling.

$349 plus $8 for shipping for a 470, so $360 all said and done.

it's just not right...from what I saw arround the net, almost every single review said that the GTX470 performed close to the HD5850,so why would Nvidia release another card just to match the 5850 performance? Why not just lower the price of the 470?

2nd December 08 I paid £166.34 for a second hand GTX260 from the states, that was probably about $240-$250, 26th June was when the GTX260 was released so i bought the card around 6 months after.

The other card i had before that was a £155 brand new 8800gt before that i had a brand new x800gto that was £120, see a pattern emerging?

I look for value in a card and i aint seen any yet in this generation. The 5850 is at the cheapest £220 in the UK, excluding deals and specials (which are hard to find). Its either the 5850 or possibly the gtx460 if its performance is right but at the moment the prices are a little to expensive and availability is short.

Unless nV has performed some architectural magic, this "cut down" GTX will drink. It will have a similar performance/watt ratio as the other GTX4x series, and therefore will be too hot and too hungry for the relative performance it offers.

IF nV could produce an LV edition that matched 5770 performance and 5770 power, then they would have a competitive offering... I would go for it just for the CUDA and physx options. But if this thing is going to heat up and drink like the 5830 does, then no thanks.

I'm with newtekie1 on this. Ill wait for a TPU review. With that being said I predict this card will be between the 5770 and the 5850. Also I think it will beat the 5850 in extreme TWIMTBP titles.

newtekie1With the GTX480 performing so much better than the HD 5870, I can't believe that is that huge of a swing in performance down to the GTX470.
Not sure I'd phrase it like that. 10% is not much better at all.

Probably the GPU is a f$%d up GTX480, with a lot of bits and pieces disabled, just like ATI's 5830.
Most likely will be much more power hungry than the GTX470...

Depends on what you are upgrading from. A 5870 isn't really an upgrade for someone like me. Aside from lower power consumption, and DX11, it offers no benefits. I'm not paying $400 for the same performance with a couple of extra features.

I'm out for this round as well. Nobody has a good upgrade path for me yet.

. last summer o the 1 before i got a gtx 260 192 core for £115 and was a great buy around £100 - £130 is the max id spend on a gpu , that is the most gaming is worth to me. il probably get a gtx 460 when its at that price, seems like it would be a good card.

not to many people care witch is fastest at top of the line £400 card thats crazy money to spend on something that will drop £200 probly buy the end of the year. people want whats good for the price . so if gtx260 is £115 and 4870 is £140 -£160 witch or u gona buy. the extra price dont justifiy the wee bit of performance gained. and since i undervolted my card to 0.95 v at stock clocks i dont care a about the extra perf.

One more thing my 2d volts are 0.75v amps 2.2 , can some1 smarter than me tel me the watts? please i cant remember but its somewere near the 5870 idle volts i think.

finally nvidia has something to compete where they'll actually make money... unless these 460s are really using lower binned laser cut GTX 480 cores...

newtekie1I'm not undecided, I've just decided not to go with any. I'm skipping this generation. Here is my think:

My current cards: HD4890/GTX285/GTX260

HD5850: Really only about 10% better than the GTX285, not really worth the $300. Though this is probably the card I would most likely go with if I did upgrade. Probably a decent upgrade over the HD4890/GTX260.
When i switched from a GTX 285 to a 5850, the out-of-the box performance was WAY better than my gtx 285. I went from medium/high on BC2 to highest settings and still getting over 55FPS. when it was overclocked to 1000/1200 i got over 5K more in 3dmark06 than the OCed GTX 285. so all in all its acually LESS that a GTX 285 right now (have you seen the prices on newegg and tiger?) so why not get a card that kills the 285 for less.

GTX 285 that i had

If you are buying the cards new, then yes by all means go with the HD5850. However, if I'm are upgrading from a GTX285 I already have, it isn't worth it. The GTX285 might still be selling for those insanely overpriced prices, but I'd never get anywhere near that for mine if I tried to sell it. And again, the performance is not that much better. I'd be looking at overall about 10%, not really worth the hassle or extra money to me, as 10% would be next to not noticeable.

I bought one 8800GT at release date, and another one after 2-3 months, both cost me $249. It was well worth it, nothing at that time can beat that except Tri-SLI, or quad-crossfire that only work in few games, and it's not a mid-range card.

GTX470 and 480 ~ HD5870, HD5890 are high end >$300
GTX460 ~ HD5850, 5830 are mainstream all should cost <$300

If you can pawn it off to someone looking for sli for ~260$(100$ below retail), you can get 10% extra perf. and Dx11 for just 50$ :p How is that not worth it? Come on, give in to the urge, listen to the little faint voice inside your head. DO IT! UPGRADE!

ZubasaLets just hope that is is not another 5830. :shadedshu
Right ... But it looks much closer to it than to 5830 just when they cut down memory bus which is still directly attached to ROPs in GF100.

newtekie1Maybe it is just me, but all the reviews I've read put the GTX 470 right at the same performance level as the HD 5870, not the HD 5850...
Yep but GTX470 will have "sufficent enough" 320 memory bus. With further reduction all we could see is large drops like in g92 with 192-bit bus. Only if they use some HD5770 like gddr with 6Gbps and not 4Gbps like in GTX480 we could saw improvements. But it's very unlikely to happen maybe they even cut that down to 3200MHz GDDR5. So the memory along only 1/2 of ROPs will be a huge issue here no matter how many shaders are inside. Nice way for envydia to collect money of gullible fans. :nutkick: Just like with HD5830 as Zubasa mentioned.

entropy13[sigquote=hardocp.com]Starting from the bottom up, we would say the least relevant video card is the GeForce GTX 470. In all our gameplay testing today, not once did the GeForce GTX 470 provide a superior gameplay experience compared to the Radeon HD 5850, even in Metro 2033. In fact, performance was very close between both video cards, and in some cases the Radeon HD 5850 proved to provide faster framerates. Looking strictly at performance, these video cards are equal.[/sigquote]

[sigquote=guru3d.com]The GeForce GTX 470 then -- obviously this card is lined up against ATI's Radeon HD 5850. It can compete with it quite well. Price wise it's definitely the more interesting of the two cards tested today. We expect that, once volume availability kicks in, this card will drop to roughly 300 USD. Performance wise we are looking at a product that positions itself smack down in the middle ATI's Radeon HD 5850 performance level and as such it's a really nice card to own.[/sigquote]
it's not too difficult to select extracts from any particular reviews to substantiate our claims, in this case I have no claim but take a look at this..... each coin usually has 2 sides....
