Core i7-3770K "Ivy Bridge" Offers Solid Performance and Efficiency

Earlier today, Anandtech posted its preview of the Core i7-3770K "Ivy Bridge" processor. The i7-3770K will be the fastest Ivy Bridge LGA1155 processor, when launched. Anandtech put the chip through a battery of tests, starting from overall system performance synthetic test suites, such as SysMark 2012, content-creation, video transcoding, gaming, and system power consumption. The one conclusion you can draw out of these tests is that the Ivy Bridge kicks butt. It has higher performance per core, and single-threaded performance than even the Sandy Bridge-E (LGA2011) chips, it aces content-creation, shines with gaming, and has power-draw lower than even the Core i5-2400 from the previous generation. If you've been holding out over a platform upgrade for a while, the Core i7-3770K is rewarding. But then there's no big incentive, if you're coming from Sandy Bridge LGA1155 chips such as the Core i7-2600K. Read the full review at the source.

Of course it does. Even with my 2600, I'll be upgrading to a Z77 motherboard now so I can get an Ivy bridge CPU later on in the year. I can only imagine what Haswell brings to the table now that Intel has stabilized their 22 nm process. :)

Should have been compared to the 2700k, for a clock-for-clock comparison.

Anyway, I'm not upgrading from my 2600k to this.

Just not worth it.

I'm definitely upgrading my 2500K to a 3770K.. I just hope AsRock updates their bios like they said they would. If not, I suppose I need a new HTPC and my current setup will work great for that.

I just wish if it had a "K" or "X" that meant it was unlocked and didn't come with the IGP. Save some space/heat/Watts. ;)

iGPU is at idle (negligible W) or you can completely disable the thing in a lot of BIOS's anyway.

All I can say is Wow! The 3770K will easily be the highest performing processor of 2012. Matched with an Asus Maximus 5 Extreme and an Intel 520ssd, what an amazing network gaming and office rig, performance, efficiency, a silent enthusiasts dream cpu, YAY!;)

Seems I way over-estimated the GPU power of that HD 4000. I was expecting GPU power much closer if not better than the HD6550D. Perhaps room for improvement via the drivers?

Definitely, Intel's drivers still suck now as they always have. I find it absurd that a multi-billion $ making corporation that is a technological leader in certain areas cannot muster a decent team of programmers which would make their GPU more competitive.

They have been making leaps and bounds of improvements over the last few years though, I still remember the GMA900 days :banghead:

Its interesting how the AMD A8 while beeing at the bottom of the list, rated half the performance of a core i7 2600 while costing 3 times less, still has enough balls to do gaming better than a core i7 on its IGP. Not a better option I imagine, but a better value is certainly there.

I hear this talking point, I do, but generally, low power units dont have discrete cards therefore making the need for a more powerful iGPU greater.

I think they should have left them out.

I sure hope I can sell off my stuff soon and get my hands on a Ivy bridge soon!

The silver bullet is OC headroom. Being able to do ~5 GHz with stock cooling.

Ugh, it is faster than 80286 too, does that mean that AMD beats Intel ? No. Comparison with obsolete out of production chips hardly makes sense ... especially when the margin of improvement is so tiny (and all thanks to the incease in number of cores rather than IPC increase).
