SLI on a single PCB

It seems Gigabyte takes the performance crown using 2 6600GT GPU's from Nvidia on a single PCB. This setup is good for nearly 2000 more 3Dmarks in 3Dmark 2003 compared to an 6800 Ultra and 1000 3Dmarks more than an X850. It should switch owner for $500-$600 which is less than the 6800 Ultra.

Why not just use 2 6800GT, or ultra GPU's?

Will ATI sue nVidia for copying their ATI Rage Fury MAXX designs? :D:D

2 ultras would probably cost too much and get too hot/suck too much power. The again they might be keeping it for the future, who knows.

I hope ATi makes their own dual x850 card. That would be badass!

Off topic:
I am a gamer and I currently have a game box with an ATi 9800 Pro. I will soon be going to school for engineering and I have to build a good workstation that will be running auto cad and other 3D applications.

Here's my questions, do these high end graphics cards (nVidia Quadro FX, ATi Fire GL, 3D Labs Wildcat Realizm) run games as well as the current gamer enthusiast cards (like the nVidia 6800GT, and ATi X800XT)? Which one of these workstation cards is the best? Any info would help, thanks.

it would be interesting to know if the nvidia sli-architecture can handle more than 2 gpu`s. if it can, than maybe sometimes there will be a sli-solution with 2 graphics board and with 2 gpu's on each board... :D

this is especially nice if you want to upgrade your graphics power some day in the future with your sli-capable motherboard and you have only one graphics card installed for now.

i think that the price such a card will cost is not that important considering that a single quadro fx4400 costs 3-4 times as much as a single 6800 (gt/ultra) and deliver compareable 3d-performance.
i bet there are crazy people out there who will pay 1000$+ for such a card. and if you have the money for such a card, than you can buy a larger psu. question is if that market is big enough... ;)

Gamers and 3D developers are a totally different market though. So price does matter. A dual 6600GT is cheaper than a single 6800 Ultra making it a valid option for an existing market, a dual 6800Ultra would be like 1000 Euros creating a new above-high-end market which would be even smaller than the current high end market.

It would be great to have on the market though, it would get ATI to do something other than the "R480" X850 which is just a way overused extension of the R300

shure it is, but who says that this card will be sold under the 'consumer-line' as a dual-6800 and not under the 'professional-line' as a new quadro?! the chips are the same on both cards, the quadro and the 6800, so why not a really high-performance card (with option to sli 2 of those cards together) for pros?

;)
