Google Unveils 72-Qubit Quantum Computer - On the Verge of Quantum Supremacy

(Editor's Note: Quantum supremacy may still be some years away as researchers strive to surpass the challenges of keeping such exotic systems stable and error-free enough for them to provide actually useful in more complex calculations. As complexity increases, so does the system's stability decrease, so researchers have to come up with novel ways of not only expanding the scope of the quantum computer, but also stabilizing it. That quantum supremacy is some years away should elicit a sigh of relief from users, as it means that our current encryption techniques will be relevant for that much more time; however, it's really only a matter of time before quantum-based encryption schemes are necessary to maintain the status quo. Of course, general purpose computers will - and do - keep on evolving and increasing in performance as well, so quantum supremacy may find itself chasing the goose, so to speak, for a little more time.)

The goal of the Google Quantum AI lab is to build a quantum computer that can be used to solve real-world problems. Our strategy is to explore near-term applications using systems that are forward compatible to a large-scale universal error-corrected quantum computer. In order for a quantum processor to be able to run algorithms beyond the scope of classical simulations, it requires not only a large number of qubits. Crucially, the processor must also have low error rates on readout and logical operations, such as single and two-qubit gates.
Today we presented Bristlecone, our new quantum processor, at the annual American Physical Society meeting in Los Angeles. The purpose of this gate-based superconducting system is to provide a testbed for research into system error rates and scalability of our qubit technology, as well as applications in quantum simulation, optimization, and machine learning.

The guiding design principle for this device is to preserve the underlying physics of our previous 9-qubit linear array technology, which demonstrated low error rates for readout (1%), single-qubit gates (0.1%) and most importantly two-qubit gates (0.6%) as our best result. This device uses the same scheme for coupling, control, and readout, but is scaled to a square array of 72 qubits. We chose a device of this size to be able to demonstrate quantum supremacy in the future, investigate first and second order error-correction using the surface code, and to facilitate quantum algorithm development on actual hardware.
Before investigating specific applications, it is important to quantify a quantum processor's capabilities. Our theory team has developed a benchmarking tool for exactly this task. We can assign a single system error by applying random quantum circuits to the device and checking the sampled output distribution against a classical simulation. If a quantum processor can be operated with low enough error, it would be able to outperform a classical supercomputer on a well-defined computer science problem, an achievement known as quantum supremacy. These random circuits must be large in both number of qubits as well as computational length (depth). Although no one has achieved this goal yet, we calculate quantum supremacy can be comfortably demonstrated with 49 qubits, a circuit depth exceeding 40, and a two-qubit error below 0.5%. We believe the experimental demonstration of a quantum processor outperforming a supercomputer would be a watershed moment for our field, and remains one of our key objectives.

We are looking to achieve similar performance to the best error rates of the 9-qubit device, but now across all 72 qubits of Bristlecone. We believe Bristlecone would then be a compelling proof-of-principle for building larger scale quantum computers. Operating a device such as Bristlecone at low system error requires harmony between a full stack of technology ranging from software and control electronics to the processor itself. Getting this right requires careful systems engineering over several iterations.
We are cautiously optimistic that quantum supremacy can be achieved with Bristlecone, and feel that learning to build and operate devices at this level of performance is an exciting challenge! We look forward to sharing the results and allowing collaborators to run experiments in the future.

I'd be amazed if this happened 10-15 years ago. Seeing how evil Google is today, it's actually scary to know they'll have this kind of tools at their disposal to harvest and process user data...

Youtube is an identitarian dumpsterfire riddled with censorship, Youtube's Twitter account is run by a smug teenager apparently, Google Search is a censorship clusterfuck (search for recent censorship of word "gun" by Google which they claimed was "just a glitch", one hell of a coincidence after all this "ban all guns" debates), you should also check the story of social network Gab and how they got banned from GooglePlay for refusing to censor it's users per progressive leftists demands and got banned from it for allowing "hate speech" (which is BS, they just refused to censor people and leave control up to users to filter and block what offends them) to fiasco and firing of James Damore (even though his memo was highly praised by pretty much entire scientific sphere) to everything we've seen during GamerGate what kind of people and climate is within Google. If we championed Google for innovation and openness back in late 90's and early 2000's, Google is today one of worst companies fueled with extreme leftist views and policies. I'm a liberal and they scare me...

When these quantum computers mature a bit or should I say a qubit, they will be able to predicted the future with uncanny accuracy with even the potential to know ahead of time when you will commit a crime. Who wants to be jailed for something they have not done yet? :banghead:
There was a man denied parole based on an algorithm in one of the New England states here in the USA about 10 or so months ago. Just saying.

This is not some "conspiracy theory", this is how Google actually operates these days. And the fact people aren't concerned or call people who are concerned as "conspiracy theorists" is what's actually even more worrying. It's even more worrying when same people are obsessed over privacy, but give Google a free pass for shit they are doing. If this was some insignificant company, who cares, but this is Google. They run a search engine used by basically entire world, they run services used by almost entire world. It should fucking worry you that single company processes, controls and manipulates how data is delivered and accessed online.
