Lian Li Updates DK-05 and DK-04 Desk-type Cases with Electrochromic Glass: DK-05F and DK-04F

Lian Li updated its DK-05 and DK-04 desk-type PC cases as the new DK-05F and DK-04F. The two come with electrochromic glass tops. With applications in office cubicles (privacy glass), automobiles (auto-dimming rear-view mirrors), and passenger aircraft like the Boeing 787, electrochromic glass allows you to adjust transparency and clarity. On Lian Li's DK-series desk-type cases, these let you adjust the opacity of the glass top, or its "blurriness." The frame of the glass top can be studded with ARGB strips so the glass top acts like a translucent diffuser. The case's front-panel now comes with a dedicated compound button to configure the glass.

Another design change with the DK-05F and DK-04F is a new detachable motherboard tray design. The tray now separates from the rest of the inner chassis, such that it only holds the motherboard's rear I/O shield and expansion slots (you don't end up pulling out the PSU along with it, like on the original DK-05/04). The rest of the feature-sets of the two are identical to their original counterparts. The DK-05F is designed for dual-system builds, with two independent ATX-size systems inside; while the DK-04F is designed for single-system builds. The company didn't reveal pricing.
A video presentation by Lian Li follows.

I spent months trying to by the previous version but couldn't find anyone that stocks them. I gave up and bought a traditional case.

Would have really liked a deskcase but you can't have what you can't buy.

The previous desk (DK-05X) costs at a local store € 1.864 minus tax or € 2256 with tax.

A little more leg room wouldn't hurt, ouch.

Most of them are from hobbyists. If I had room and tools I would like to do something like this.

Also, the last one was expensive af.

This is why I want to learn to weld aluminum...fine point welds.

I honestly think $2500 is reasonable.
I don't see the cost of manufacturing these to be less than $700 a unit..probably more from limited production runs.

It's not. You could buy all the tools and materials to make this with the exception of the glass for less.

Yeah, you can get a simple crystal desk for about 100 - 150€. Now, let's say more material for about the double and add 200 for manufacturing cost and design. 500€ is still expensive and overcalculated but still in line for a niche product. 2000 is just sheer insanity, I rather mod an existing one and learn how to do it.

Lol, they can keep it! At that price I'd go for a DIY one.

Maybe it's just a niche for flashy vloggers and streamers?

For all the trouble they went through, you still only get USB 3.1 with only one USB-C port. Nicely done.

I think one can design and build a better one by themselves, for 1/4 to 1/3 of that price.
