Oculus Will Sell You a Quest 2 Without Facebook Integration for an Extra $400

When Oculus launched the Oculus Quest 2 at a record low price of just 299 USD for the base 64 GB model and 399 USD for the 256 GB model many people suspected Oculus was losing money on the device and was subsiding the loss with the introduction of mandatory Facebook account linking. These suspicions seem to have been confirmed with the launch of the Oculus Quest 2 business version for 799 USD which features identical hardware specifications to the consumer 256 GB version available for 399 USD. This 400 USD premium allows the device to be managed via enterprise software instead of with a linked Facebook account and will stop Oculus from sending your data to Facebook. The Quest 2 business version must be purchased from Oculus Business and also requires a yearly subscription of 180 USD after the first year for added business services and support.

Create a problem and then sell the solution, sadly the tactic is used in too many things these days.

Strictly speaking it is a backwards sales contract. You provide details which are then used to create massive profit. The FB user should require a dividend.

I know you agree to the ToS but it's still BS. At least Google users used to get super short surveys that gave you credit to use on the Play Store. My wife had £20 built up.

As for this move by Oculus, yeah, just proves the subsidy to be owned by FB.

This is like selling Kindle with app and without app. In the first place, I really see no reason why FB needs to be integrated with VR headset. FB is just finding an excuse to charge extra, and I don't know if you are really getting an Oculus without any strings attached still. FB being FB will try any and all means to extract data from you.

I hope eventually someone comes up with a Quest 2 alternative then. Good price and good functions. I would with G2 but its too expensive.

$799 plus $180/yr? That'll just push even more people into a Valve Index or a PiMax headset instead.

The only thing people have been talking about is the mandatory account linking to facebook that the quest 2 headset has, why does it that matter if they have tried VR or not?

Yet you'd still be giving more money to Facebook.

I'd rather buy an HTC vive or some other brand of VR that isnt involved with facebook at all.

That really shows how much Facebook (and other 'free' social media) should be paying us for our data.

Disclosure: I own a Vive and have use of a Quest2, work has a mix of legacy Rift, Vive and some newer quests that we use for teaching, dev work and events. I got to try a holo lens at an MS event, so plenty of VR experience but I think AR is going to be what gets mass consumer adoption. I see a future where your AR can display someone's social media floating above their head Theme Park style.

The Quest 2 is being sold at a loss. Look at other Standalone HMD's they can't compete in price or offer the end-user experience or the game catalog that the Quest 2 offers. Just some hindsight. We do have a new standalone VR HMD coming but no word on price yet. It's the DecaGear VR HMD. I'll be interested to see how much it will cost.

They will try it soon enough. I don't see VR slowing down now with the help of Quest 2. There is a group on FB that is complaining about it. What people fail to see is that the FB login integration is no different than PSN, XBL, Steam, Epic, etc... They think that by using an FB login for the Quest 2 that you load straight into FB.. You know and I know that it's nothing like that at all. We are pretty much on the Ground floor with Quest 2. It's great hardware but your phone tracks you by far better than the Quest 2.

You gotta hand it to the amount of crazy conspiracy tin foil people thinking FB is out there to get them, and them specifically. On the other hand if they REALLY don't want to tracked they should stop commenting on this very forum, pull plugs on all internet connected advice and go live off grid using cash only. FB gets lots of hate simply it is trendy to do so. It is cool to diss on the big bad evil company. While happily hand over their digital info to Apple, Google and etc.
