Personally, I love the video game movies myself, the latest being the DOA movie. Sure, its not a game, but its loosely based and they are quite enjoyable to myself. Super Mario Bros, Double Dragon, Street Fighter (even those Uwe Bolle droll movies) are awesome. I cant wait to see this as WarCraft is one of my favorite all time PC games.

The DOA movie's plot was pretty bad but the actors were good... the female actors

I think the only real popular movie-after-game movie was Tomb Raider.
Game had boobies, movie had boobies. Worked out somehow.

Disclaimer for any movie based on a video game:

If it's not CGI, don't make it!

If there were ever a video game/movie truism, I'd say this:

If it's a movie first, it'll end up as a terrible video game.

If it's a video game first, it'll end up as a terrible movie.

The list of examples of this is SO exhaustive that I can't think of any that are exceptions (Tomb Raider included)

Did you see advent children? It was very impressive. I bet its the best CG I have ever seen in a full length picture, at least most artistic. But I agree, in general they suck.
as for Halo the movie...I don't have high hopes, but they have a high budget...so you never know.

Did anyone see the Doom movie? They threw away all the potential that the movie had and made a horrible movie from a legendary game. I hope this Warcraft movie doesn't turn out the same way...

the one thing a warcraft movie has going for it is an extremely extensive and well-developed backstory. Indeed, a movie focusing entirely on the backstory would form no conflicts with the game while providing more tangible backstory to the series.
I've read the starcraft novels and they were excellent; i don't see why a warcraft movie would be impossible.

I agree with the statement in principle, however, one acception that comes to mind is Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic I & II. Those were phenomenal RPG's in their own right and were far and above the previous Star Wars games. So yes, the truism still applies, but I think there is occasionally room for an exception.

EDIT: I think a good observation here is that the games weren't actually based on the Star Wars movies themselves, but in the larger Star Wars universe.

I'll take that a step further and KOTOR 1 was better than the recent movies, especially episode 1.

Don't forget "Tie Fighter" was an excellent game back in the day.

WarCraft Movie Possibilities

Ok here’s my take on them doing a World of Warcraft Movie. First of all if they decide to go the live action real actor’s route they are going to have to put some serious effort and time into how they’re going to make it look because it could be a sweet concept but it could easily go very wrong. Movies based on fantasy worlds are very hard to do and if done wrong you could end up with something like Eragon, however if done right you could end up with something like Lord of the Rings. Furthermore if they decide to go the CGI route it raises the question of will it be graphically done just like World of Warcraft graphics or more realistic like Final Fantasy. Beyond these points another main issue is what they will use for a plot line. Throughout all the Warcraft history their has been an abundance of plot lines and stories and in no way could they encompass it all with the movie so they will definitely need to focus on one story in particular while maybe referencing other stories here and there throughout the movie. They do say though it will encompass both the original Warcraft and The World of Warcraft. One thing I do think they could do is focus on the arrival of the horde to Azeroth and play through that up to the scourge and Prince Arthas. Anyways whatever they do it will be very tricky because they stand on the edge of a blade where it could either be something fantastic or another flop that so many movies made after games tragically follow. Furthermore it is true sadly yes that most movies made based on a video game are quite horrible and badly done however one glimpse of hope is that this video game has one thing going for it that most games don’t that have been made into a movie, and that is the rich history and cultural themes that Warcraft has quite an abundance of to be pulled from.

As long as it's a backstory and not with crap like "I am level 80 hero class, I will defeat you with my sword of a thousand truths!", I'm all for it. I heard it was gonna be based in the warcraft universe but have its own storyline different from the games.

As far as good movies to games, did you guys forget about Goldeneye?? That was the best game (besides Zelda) on the N64. I also liked Jedi Knight 2 based on star wars.

I'd rather see a Starcraft-movie, but I hope this turns out OK. And considering it's Blizzard, I think it will. :)
