Personally, I run my AV program (NOD32) all the time on my computer. Smart people don't get viruses, but I sometimes come across them once and a while, and NOD32 catches them before I open the file. Very cool.

Nah, with hard firewalls these days, I can't see any 'gamer' / enthusiast getting infected, or needing protection against infection.

If you're savvy, and just stay away from shady sites/connections, then you'll be fine.

It doesn't hurt however, to have a small program that monitors .exe or .dll files when they launch or try to access your network. It also does wonders for showing you just what exactly is being put on your hard disk when you install a program.

I've never found soft-firewalls or AV suits to be of any use.

ZoneAlarm Standard and Nod32. ZA slows me down a bit but the current Nod32 is exceptionally fast and low on resources.

Conclusion is,

U need security, U need to pay & need give some Power to them to protect US.
The big security, Big pay & Big Power and vise versa depend on yr need.

Ex, if yr house got security & yr friend want to come, security need to filter first and that take a time. If no security, their just passthru more faster but anybody can go inside too and told you "Im also yr friend!!! do u remember..."

firewall it's like a Gate. the stong gate is good to prevent others coming inside. But during yr friend coming, u need open the gate to let them come in. without security, yr friend was not filter properly, How know yr friend got pistol that will shoot you and take yr girlfriend.... haha

This funny...

Nope i don't, i just use a Firewall, a good free one, Comodo ;) best free one out there. I have used CA before and once every few months i might run it on my comp just to make sure, but each time i find nothing. So now i don't bother using any at all.

Anti virus software just slows down the computer, and they just get to hungry for resources.

I'm just careful in what i open :p

Umm i cant seem to put in my vote, keeps asking to vote at the front page? huh

Check out the amount of ram it uses, or processor power especially during a scan.

I remove Norton and McAfee off around 50 computers a month and replace it with Nod32 and the customers are extremely happy, I see many less systems that I have loaded with Kaspersky or Nod32 come in with bad virus infections.

Norton is very well known to be slow and dog down computers.

I agree, i had norton 2005 and it was heavy and slow back then =/, then i had a guy come around with this computer, and he said just make it run faster, its so slow!!
It had Norton 360 on it and OMG i have never seen a computer take so long to boot and be so slow, and it wasn't a old computer ether.

Stay away from Norton 360 it is dreadful :shadedshu

Back in the day (Win XP) I used AVG and Sygate personal firewall, never had a single infection.... And I like to swim with the sharks if you know what I mean.
Chose those because of low resource need, no fancy pancy skinned interface. Purely professional.

Now I use standard Vista firewall, and Avira Antivir (very very low overhead) and Spybot for auditing once in a while(no svc) .

NOD32 would be my choice if it were free that is.

Aye -- I've seconded Sygate. You can still get it from Softpedia.com for those users on WinXP. Never found a better firewall -- even picks up when you're being port scanned, it's amazing.

I have been thinking about getting One Care, so it works good, easy to use?

I have AVG and I run Ad-Aware once a week

It works Great! Very easy to use. I was using McAfee+ Ad-Aware+ AVG+ Spy Bot and my network kept getting hijacked and infected. I downloaded the 90 day trial of One Care and installed it. I haven't seen a bug since. It worked so well that I bought a One Care 1.5 version ($15.00) and installed it when my trial expired. I'm good until Feb. 2009 and will gladly install again. Great piece of software and 90 days free!!!:D

The last virus i had was with Windows 2000. I didnt know back then, that it was the prime target. After that no problems. Should i ever encounter them again, there are enough free programs available to use and discard.

All works pretty good. Most viruses get picked up before I open them :)

Hardware firewall, Spybot (I like resident, it lets me tell Qtime no registry changes, lol) and misc online scans when I feel the need.
I'm always ready to format anyway. Right now my main PC is looking for a virus, lol. I'm ready to format it.

I say users are the number one reason for viruses.

KIS 2009, and glad.

Despite being 'careful' i recently opened up my router to DMZ to my gaming PC while hosting a far cry 2 server. Within 15 minutes (bad luck i guess) i'd had several virus/work attacks from chinese IP's, mostly the "helkern" worm.

Without kaspersky covering my ass, even with being 'careful' with files, it'd be too late and my systems would be screwed right now.

edit: adding some information that i've found from other AV's recently.

Nod32: used to be my AV.has problems with P2P applications, including games. I know i was unable to play company of heroes with it running, and Utorrent recently released fixes to try and work around nod32's odd behaviour.

AVG: You know... i end up removing this from a lot of PC's. It finds *lots* of false positives. On several new game releases, and program releases i tend to see people complaining about viruses - in the end they're all AVG users and they have to wait for an update to fix it. A good antivirus program never gets a false positive.
