Fan Filters

you definitely want dust filters, and on the intake side of the fans. dont bother with exhaust fans.

i spent a year with aa antec 900 and no filters, that was hell.

now i just slide the filter from the bottom of my cosmos, turn around, and blow on it. the slide it back in. simple :)

Id get filters for sure, and make them on the outside of the fan/case. My case has filters built in, the whole side panel is a filter and so is the top and going from a case that had no filters this was a big improvment in keeping the dust out. Now all i do most of the time is wipe the dust off the side of the case were the fan is, couse it all gets stuck around there, and i dont have to worry about inside nearly as much as i used to, even tho it gets a good clean every month or two before each LAN. I find mine funny it has filters at the top of the case since i use the top fan to blow the hot air out (heat rises) but at the same time its good, couse it blows the left over dust that does get into the case into the filter lol.

Dust in a case can couse overheating to components and also can if gets bad enough start a fire :shadedshu

Keep using those dust filters :toast:

I believe that you are dreaming , but i am not the one that will spoil your dreams.

the Antec 900 uses negative pressure cooling, the drive bay covers are mesh and air is being sucked in through there.

I believe that you are dreaming , but i am not the one that will spoil your dreams.

it's true. dust is an insulator, it can also cause short circuits but it's very improbable.

Ummm no not realy, we all know dust will increase temps of lets say the CPU and Video card etc if it was clogged with dust? i know it did with my old comp, got that hot it shut it self off at 75c, once all dust removed, dropped back down to 40c (yrs ago). And i remember getting told back in Tafe/College days that it has happened that computers have started to burn couse of to much dust around hot running components, extreme cases of course, but has happened.

Thats the reality ... so next time stay on it . :)

Well the reality is that yes if ya BIOS supports the feature of shutting down a comp before the CPU gets to hot then that's great, older BIOS's didn't, and then you have Video cards, they shut off at over 100c, the 7600GT is 115c, so that's clearly hot enough to start to burn if it was clogged with dust, don't you think?

The reality is the increase of dust in your computer is going to increase the chance of overheating or in extreme cases fire.

Ok i will say only this , computers does not sets fires ..... Because of dust .

Any one , who fanatically supports or promotes this idea ... are living in a illusion .

I do not care were you live ... in Europe all the computers are safe . :D

Maybe if there a whole lot of dust which in turn messes with maybe a PCI slot or something in ehcih sparks fly and catch the carpet on fire.

Or overheating due to dust and the computer doesn't shut down it self.

If you wish to catch a fire no matter what .... just do this .... Use a totally no name PSU ,
and set your box at the floor , with the PSU fan to blow on your windows curtains .

Now overclock the system , and start dancing around it .... if you are lucky , the PSU will blow , the flames will ejected by the PSU fan on the curtains , and your home will become truly hot.

Thats the only way to do it .

lol, thats how i would think it would happen. Dust would be very rare.

Before 4 years back i got a HIPER PSU ... worked great for 2 years ... one day suddenly blow up .... strong explosion sound .... no smoke - no fire ... The PSU protection circuits worked perfectly , nothing got damaged , other than the PSU it self .

HIPER has 3 years warranty ... send it for RMA , got the new ... Fresher rev ... amazing device.

After 2 years updated the PSU with a stronger HIPER one ( New Video card and headroom ) .

Why HIPER again ? ... Because it proved it self , that when we say " protection circuits " ... the working ones, is the ones that you can trust. ;)

thats because the ATX Form Factor requires over current protection, over temperature protection and short-circuit protection. Type-M HPU-4M630,Type-M HPU-4M780, Type-M HPU-4M880, Type-R Mk II HPU-5B-680, Type-R Mk II HPU-5K-680, Type-R Mk II HPU-5B-880, Type-R Mk II HPU-5K-880, Type-R Mk II HPU-5K-880 are all manufactured by Channel Well Technology everything else is manufactured by Andyson or Sirfa.

Bumblebee, Do you know who made this one?

I bought for a second system for peanuts, and hope it wasn't because it was designed by monkeys. It said it was 80+% efficient, so I thought there might be mileage there.

I hope it doesn't go pop like Kiriakosts'

um no. not if it'd an insulator it can't.

check the OEM sticker for the 6 digit UL Number and then type it in here

um no. not if it'd an insulator it can't.

um no what? dust can cause a short circuit but it has to be statically charged first.

Ahh that explains it...^

I just clean the outer dust off with my hand and i am not to worried about the miroc layer. But i also blow on some of the parts to.

ok I checked google and apparently in the UK they use something different might be a FC or TVK Number. apparently HEC manufactured your power supply they have manufactured some Antec and Thermaltake power supplies. I did find something interesting on the UL OD when I query Corsair.

Bumblebee, indebted to you yet again.

I paid £25 for it new, which would equate to roughly $35 in U.S.

I thought on one hand buying cheap PSUs is dodgy, on the other hand 80% efficiency means I am buying a PSU, not a fan heater. To achieve reasonable efficiency I thought it must be reasonably designed and put together.

If they make for bigger names, I am sure these names would have checked them over as well.

I am trying to put a system together for kids using old part (e.g. IDE drives and CDS, 6 yo graphics card etc) in a Coolermaster 330 case, so this was perfect PSU.

Cheers Bumble!!!

The HEC is a respectable brand , at list to me .. :)

I have from them, the HEC-525VD-AT PSU on my second system , and the case om my primary is from them too HEC 6919 . ( a bit hacked to my taste ) ;)

Any way i got this case for two good reasons :
1) Has removable fan filter.
2) Its very heavy = no vibrations .
3) Had the space that i was need as headroom ... ( Now its full ) :D but i need no more space.

The point is that far from brands , the successful model is what counts more.
If a specific model gains positive comments, thats a positive aspect.

Brands create and breakup partnerships all the time .. that why i promote the idea of looking for models,
instead blind full love with the brands.

BumbleBee its a pleasure to see that you know the ways, to do properly your home work ;)
