I7 vs PII

good idea
right now were getting all the benchmarks so we can start

Can you post a link to the sciencemark dl?

Its on the TPU DL page

This is for those that want to compare the I7 vs Phenom II.
These test are from the actual users who use these processors.
PLZ if you dont have a I7 or PII dont start flaming this thread.
keep it Clean!
Post the Benches/games/programs you want to be seen and i will post in here.
Show a CPU-Z of the clocks being used on that particular test

Programs:
3DMark06
Encoding Download both the x264 benchmark and AviSynth 2.5.7 and run from the HD Benchmark file
wprime
Cinebench
Everest Memory Bench
CPU-Z
GPU-Z

your encoding link is dead man :slap:

both rigs are down for a few days

ill try to fix it but on ps3

added to first post

is there a program that can make charts or something from the data we collect

ok let's start this off I will post a few runs at 3.7 to 3.9 since that is about the 24/7 most people have who's going to challenge this on the i7 side?

depends on what your gonna run..

I have 4.3 fully stable as my 24/7 settings.

What u want to run?

Want me to leave HT ON? but that would slaughter your PHII in all the cpu benchmarks. :X

Yeah lets just pick something and throw down. I want a straight up battle end this stupid debate of which is better.

Whats it gonna be? Cinebench? Encoding? I've already dropped a bench for the benchmark Wile_E linked. AMD boys need to represent.

Here's the 24/7 clock on the Core i7 920 (This is at 1.3v):

Stock wPrime Run, from right after the build was up:

4Ghz run of 3DMark06, the HD4870X2 is at stock:

Here's wPrime at 4.2Ghz (Multi dropped since it ain't under load, and I like it that way since this is one hot CPU...):

Yes. Where is the 3.66Ghz Phenom run in the X.264 benchmark? That's the only bench I'm interested in.

Wile i ran one test of X 264 bench as a first test and now i cant run it any more.... i get to the screen where it asks you to type in the name of the test and than after hitting ENTER the black box closes and doesn't run the test. Any ideas?

Then you would need a set up consisting of the same equipment aside from the ram/mobo.

Otherwise, we're just throwing out numbers.

Codec packs can cause issues with those things, especially since AviSynth is used. K-Lite, for example, is a major offender in things like this.

Then whats the point of a benchmark if it shows a base line preformance(in numbers) for how well a cpu/gpu/ram preform. How would you suggest we best settle this PII VS i7? Benchmarks??

i don't have either the i7 nor PII. But i def think 3dmark06 should be left out and of course if you do use it, only look at the CPU score, not overall. As for ram, course not everyone will have the same type :p, but for these comparisons there should be a baseline on the frequency and timings. 1333mhz, 6-6-6-18 or whatever timings and speeds will work with at least 2 PII owners and 2 i7 users. I realize some of you purchased better ram and whatnot but this is just to compare cpu to cpu and ram can affect scores. As for the HT On or Off, both should be run to see the difference in general in apps with HT On or Off, and how much HT can benefit over the PII in comparison to when HT is off. Frequency wise well there's plenty of stock benchmarks around so i def thk it should be lowest 3.4ghz though a start at 3.6ghz would be better. so 3.6ghz->3.8ghz->4ghz if some can manage the 4ghz oc, i kno i7 users can but i only see 3.8ghz usually on the PII in peeps' specs. An encoding benchmark would indeed be one of the best choices for a comparison. Gaming i don't thk is required, we all know that PII is on par with the i7 in gaming as the bottleneck is shifted to gpu at 1680x1050+ and anyone purchasing a PII or i7 shouldn't be playing below that res. Cinebench is good, everest i guess it just shows what your CPU can put out, not really performance. I have no idea why to include GPU-Z as this is about CPU's. Just my 2 cents, dunno if i'm out of place suggesting anything since i don't have either CPU. Interested to see results :toast:

i have owned both the phenom II 940 and i currently have the i7 920

my i7 @ stock speed is better than the phenom @ 3.7GHz.

here are some 3dmark06 scores with the i7, single 4770 and CF 4770 scores

phenom II 940 + 1x gtx 285 = i7 920 + 1x 4770
but if you swap the gpu's around, its not even close.
