I don't know about hardest, but what about near-aneurysm-inducing? Then Ikari Warriors for NES is your game. Well, it can't be even considered a game, but an endurance contest, between you (the player) and the game itself. Level, after level, after level, after... well you get the idea.

The game itself is not very complex, I mean it is a NES game after all. Controls are very simple and you pretty much just move from the bottom to the top of the screen taking-out any enemies in the way. Problem is that there seems to be no end to the levels. No, really! The game goes on, and on, and on, with no apparent end. I remember going at it for probably 4-5 hours in a single sitting, trying not to die and yet there was no end to the game no matter how long I went on.

So, the game is not really hard in that classic way, just... endless?

nothing hard about A B B A...

Contra for NES? If so, then that one was pretty easy for me. I think I made a video via emulator of me finishing it in under 40 minutes or something back in 2000-2001 or around there. The only part I found a bit difficult was the factory level.

If you mean some other port of Contra, then I'm not sure, since I don't think I've tried too many others, aside from a port for Sega Genesis (I forget the exact title). But the NES one was pretty easy, emulator or no emulator.

Yeah, I mean the original. 3 lives, one hit kill and no save point...... Tis a bitch.

Music kept me playing as a kid.

Oh dear God, I forgot about that one. Only one that I could do anything with was Spidey. Storm's levels were the hardest.

DIABLO II / HELL mode difficulty is by far the hardest game i ever played . Well it's not impossible , but i did smash a couple of mice when i was playing . Don`t ask why ...

Never got to hell, made it all the way to the jungle on Nightmare mode and got slaughtered by the natives there. Quit very soon after that.

Here's one I have that I forgot about. It's an adventure game (ala Myst) with mind numbingly hard puzzles. It's called Schizm : Mysterious Journey.

One reviewer stated that the only people who would like the game were people with advanced degrees in engeneering or people who had a walk-through.

I got my butt handed to me many times playing Oblivion on the hardest setting, but I am not much of a fan of that kind of difficulty. Most RPGs simply increase NPC strength and accuracy and reduce the players. I would rather see an increase in the tactical AI of the mobs which makes for a more mentally challenging game instead of just resorting to ranged attacks until you are good enough to take damage.

Doom 2 on the last level - never finished it without a cheap..

Homeworld 2 - surprised to see that here. I thought it was long and brilliant, hard yes but not impossible.

Also Lemmings - Anyone completed all the levels?

I totally agree... pretty much the fail of 99.99% of all RPG's.

Except that one time, after hours of playing and using that code perhaps a dozen times, I input it wrong :banghead:

Don't think I ever played it again (got it free, no real loss).

holy sh*t dude that is the game i also think is the hardest i have played. i played it with a friend for countless hours and we could never beat it. we got really pissed and found that if you played a certain level a certain way there would be a bug in the game and make it impossible  wow were we pissed!

What the heck are the keyboard controls for IWTBTG?
There is no information with it at all.
Can you jump and stuff, or is it just run and die.

Axelay [my all time fav]
R-type
Super Alesta
Ikaruga

BUT hands down to Metal Slug series, I always wasted like 5 bucks on the arcades and never beated them >< and i was good at it too!...so much that i had people gather around me, but that game still kicked my arse.

Hardest game I've played? Thats easy. Ever tried to button up your "button fly" jeans before your girlfriends dad opened the bedroom door? Add a half liter of Vodka to the mix and you have a helluva hard game on your hands!
