The 5850 will be a better purchase if you are getting a 24" monitor (1920 x 1080?) - I'd definitely hold out and keep saving for now, wait for Fermi to be released and see what deals you can get on a 24" monitor, maybe have a look at the For Sale section?

It makes more sense economically to buy the card that will last longer.

I went the same route as you and bought the 5770 from Microcenter before returning it. The performance was shabby, at best. However, with my 5870, I get 80-110 fps with max settings in BFBC2.

This is too much of an open ended question without more details. Kinda need to know what games you play, what your budget is like etc. Typically answering these questions will determine the best path.

I'm going from a 5770 to a 5850. There is nothing wrong with a 5770, its a fantastic card. Quiet, low power consumption, plays most games perfectly fine but does lack a bit when settings are maxed. DX11 heavy games ARE COMING. Metro 2033 and Bad Company 2 are two games that have DX11 features already. More titles with come with DX11 features, you will definitely want a beefier card, 5850 no doubt.

I have a one and it's heaven. Currently I don't even have to overclock it to play most of the games available. Only BFBC2 had forced me to overclock it but after I overclocked the CPU, I downclocked it to default speed again.
I used to be an nvidia guy but after Geforce 5 I'm open to any card that suits my need : Bang for my bucks.

Well, 24" monitors come with 1920X1080 flavour usually, so I would go for 5850. That said, the 5770 is no write off at that resolution. Check the review below:

Not sure really System, a lot of people aren't selling their beloved 5850's. Used, I'm assuming they would go for $250-260ish shipped? Brand new, you can get one for $299 shipped at EWiz.
