Guide to Radeon X800/X850 bios modding

another question

Another quick question, once i flash the bios any suggestion at what I should allow for a max temp on the card until I can get a better cooler? And any suggestions on a specific cooler? Thanks!

I would suggest to accept temperature of up to 70C for normal under load with absolute maximum of 75-80C. The problem is with the memory chips not with the core. Memory has working temp. maximum of 80C and (based on my experiance) indeed above 75-80C it can't be overclocked not even reach the specification speed without artifacts.

In order to unlock to 16 pipes use my Automated Flash Utility on bootable CD image from here: http://www.savefile.com/projects/733218

You will find several flash options (including overclocked BIOSes). Your original BIOS is absolutely the same like that used in the utility. After the flash process reinstall your drivers.

Success

Unfortunately the information is absolutely enough to tell you that your X850PRO VIVO can't be unlocked to 16 pipes. Sorry for that  .

hmm.

Are you sure dolf? is it the because his fuse is 0xFFFFFF9E or the die fuse of 0xFFFFeFFF? I have an x850pro vivo with almost the exact same dump as his - r481 core, 0x861 rom fuse. Just wondering what you it is exactly.

Jus got my Palit X800GTO recently, it is a 12pipelines card, just not sure can unlock the another 4 pipelines or not? Or can I flash the current bios to other version of bios so that i can get a better performances for the card. Thanks!:)

You will stuck to 12 pipes but if you want (with R420 core) it is possible to flash it to 12 pipe X800XT or X800XT PE (depending on the overclock core/memory) with all the extras like Overdrive and temperature monitoring within the driver. Be carefull with the heat at high clocks and be sure that your card's temp. doesn't exceed 75C.

But I think my card dun have a temperature sensor, when i open the ATITool, it didn't show me the temperature for the card. Is there any other ways to let me see the temperature?

Is there a better BIOS than the stock BIOS?

Hi All,

After reading through most of the related threads, I have determined that I cannot unlock any extra pipelines. That being said, I would like your opinions as to the best course of action for my card. Is there a better BIOS for my card? (I have not been able to use ATIWinflash with any success which is a good thing since I am not really sure which BIOS to use anyway, heh) What is a stable OC for my card? (I am guessing that I will just have to play around with that and see what I can get). What are the preferred drivers? (ATI drivers, Sapphire drivers, etc)

Oh and just for the record, I have visually checked that I have the R480 core.

Thanks in advance!! :)

Here are my system specs:

Current Drivers: Sapphire Catalyst drivers 6.10
Video Card: Sapphire ATI Radeon X800 GTO Blue (R480)
CPU: P4 2.4GHz
MainBoard: MSI 865PE Neo2
Memory: 1GB Dual Channel 333Mhz
Drives:80GB 7.200RPM w/ 8mb Cache WD
200GB 7,200RPM w/ 8mb Cache Maxtor
Monitor: 19" CRT Samtron 98BDF
Case: Antec (Bronze)
Sound Card: Audigy 2ZS
PSU: Antec SmartPower 300W (SL300S)

Here are my ATITools settings:

Sorry but I haven't seen the producer of your card. Palit probably uses not a referent design PCB or just miss some elements to make the card cheaper. If you can post a picture or a link to picture of your card.

It is different PCB design and for sure (99.9%) you can't monitor the temp. Don't flash it with other BIOSes.

Oh my.... Don't dare to overclock it anymore since doesn't know the temperature.... too bad for me even this card is very overclockable, sigh...:(

I wish to unlock my x850 pro agp true power, with 16 pipelines please!
my xfire is hellknightx if u wanna help me or play some CS:S/CS:1.6

Not seeing whats in the guide

I have an ATI Radeon X800GTO AGP w/256Mbs of ram
I opened up Atitool and my card at least looks like it can be modded, however I've tried many different HEX editors and none of them shows information like the original picture in the guide i.e. (6102) when I get to that area in the bios through the hex editor it only shows 2 digits 61, like the columns are not right or not showing everything... I attached an image of it anyways... any ideas?

x850pro

Picked up an AGP version "ATI 100-435712 Radeon X850PRO 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 VIVO" (Newegg, obviously).

I've read a few pages, and I believe my card is unlockable.
Die_Fuses: 0xFFFFFFFF
Substrate_Fuses: 0xFFFFFF9F

The question I have is should I stick with flashing to another ATI BIOS? or should I try a 3rd-ish party BIOS (such as Sapphire). And do I need to worry about finding a VIVO bios? I'd imainge that's fairly seperate.

And I was able to bring my speeds up to a stable 540/590 using the stock cooler and the fan somewhere around 90%. Does this sound right to anyone else?

I've flashed two cards as of now (my old 9800pro to XT, and roommate's x800pro to XT PE). So hopefully this will go as smoothly as the last two did.

Wow. I tried overclocking the card for a screenshot, but ATITool didn't do too good of a job of managing the fan when I asked it to "Try to keep GPU tempature at: 70c". The card quickly heated up and froze my system. Amazingly, Firefox 2.0 was able to restore all of my tabs and even recover everything I had typed on this post.

Don't quote me on this, but you can still overclock your card. Utilities like ATITool can run tests for you while you overclock and tell when your card is starting to find it's limit. Simply install ATITool, run it, and click the "Find Max Core" button. This will slowly overclock your card while it carefully monitors it for errors. When it finds an error, it will back off a little bit and you should end up with a safe, stable overclock.

Do...
...use ATITool.
...use common sense. Don't expect more than a 10% overclock, but don't be afraid to try.

Do not...
...overclock manually if you're not familiar with overclocking in general.
...use your computer while ATITool is running it's tests.
...let your computer "sit and work it out" if the computer freezes. If the computer freezes, Restart immediately!

This is how I overclocked my 9800 Pro. Through testing, I found that I could keep 415MHz stable (from 380) without the use of a temperature sensor. Other people may have different theories on overclocking, but as far as ATITool goes, it's fairly simple.

Hum

When flashing my roommate's computer, he edited the BIOS because he couldn't push the speeds he needed (but still wanted it to say "XT PE"). I don't remember what program he used, but I'm checking out RaBiT currently. I'm having an error saying that there are "problems" with the RaBiT.sys driver, but everything seems to work alright.

My latest question is "Would changing the description (shown in the attached image) mess up anything with drivers down the road? or is that all to do with the device ID."

And as a side note, I can't extract the BIOS from inside windows. I'm guessing the 64-bit OS I'm running is to blame.

Bios Flash successful!

Flash successful on ati radeon x800gto, AGP enabled 16 pipes... But the darn thing isn't very overclockable especially with the stock fan even with additional fans blowing directly onto the card. Original clocks were 405 core, and 986 memory... max I can get to with stabe image is 430 core and 1080 memory. Guys, is it pointless to look into aftermarket cooling? I mean the temperature of the core at these settings while gaming is about 55 degrees celcius... Any one suggest some good cooling, thats not going to break the bank? One last thing what should I really expect from a system upgrade while keeping this card?

Current specs.

AMD Athlon 3200+
Gigabyte KT600 motherboard
768MB pc3200 ram

Upgrade specs.

ASRock 939DUAL-VSTA S939 ULI M1695 DDR AGP PCI-E16 3PCI SATA RAID Sound LAN
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Dual Core Processor S939 Retail Box
Kingston HyperX PC3200 1GB 2X512MB DDR400 Dual Channel Kit

The "problems" with the RaBiT.sys driver will disappear if you are using RaBit 1.7.
The "description" won't change the card recognition. It could be done by Device ID, SubSystem and SubVendor ID's. I will recommend to flash with X850XT BIOS (520/540MHz).

You can use the automated flash utility for X850PRO VIVO AGP: http://www.savefile.com/projects/738578
