Well first is that a AM2 chip you have now or a 939 chip? What motherboard do you have?

how do i find out that information? device manager or dxdiag?

Start menu> run > then type in 'MSinfo32' >press enter. This will display all system specs.
For mobo info look up system specs on internet using Computer make and model #'s.

this is specs see no motherboard

Mobo is motherboard, look it up on the internet >support>system specs>Motherboard.

i know that board, its mostly used on OEM machines, my dads packard bell carries it,

if you can get a bios update for it, it will probobly run that cpu without problems,

btw, alot of OEM semprons are socket 939, so OEM manufacturers dont have to bother with the whole 754/939 issue, its basicly the same chip,

what update do i get?

this is the updatei found ,will it work

ON THAT SPECIFICATION SHEET IT SAYS YOUR MOTHERBOARD CAN SUPPORT AMD ATHLON 64 X2 UP TO 4800+,SO YEAH YOU CAN JUST PUT THE NEW PROCESSOR IN THERE AND IT SHOULD WORK FINE,

thanks i just wanted to know if i could do that drop in and thats all thanks all who replied. compaq told me that this upgrade would not really make my pc any faster is this right?? am i wasting my $$ going from 1.8ghz to 2.4ghz

there is clockgen for that board (google clockgen) and with that 4000 newegg has fx55's for just a little more and with the clockgen and the 4000 you might get 2.6+ghz and with the fx55 2.8+ and as long as its stable you will be fine. For that board you need a higher multi as there is no bios options for overclocking except LDT/HTT adjustment and memory dividers. I have one with a 3700 Sandiego and it works fine at 2513mhz with the clockgen and I got a little better performance from the proc upgrade from a 3200 winchester. Also make sure you use matched pairs of DDR400 mem as then you can run in dual channel mode 2x1gb is ideal and get a an SATA150 harddrive if you don't already have one, you will see performance increase with all these parts, and you have a PCI/e card slot so you can get a decent video card in there to. The 7184/7093 are good stable s939 mATX ATI 200 express boards but for oveerclocking it sucks. STill it does have upgrade options.

yes you can drop in the chip and go windows will give you a found neew hardware then your done and the 4000 should make for a good improvement :D performance wise

ya its thermal tape...its not as good as arcticsilver5 but it will get you started...

1 thing before i put in wanna be sure i dont ruin my pc

it shows i just take the fan out ,take the old processor out. put the new processor in and put the new heatseak fan back over it . is that all???? is it that simple???

yes that simple........i don't think windows needs a reinstall...but wtf do i know..lol...just swap the cpu and fan...then fire it up..nice thing about AMD's today is they are tough to break....im sure you will be fine...good luck to ya..:rockout:

compaq would say that, you have to think would they rather you upgrade your current pc or go back to them and order a newer one ? :ohwell: that processor kicks ass and depending what you use it for you should have a lot more power at your disposal :rockout:

its not detecting the new processor

i went in dxdiag and there is nothing at all showing up on the system tab how do i fix this?
