best cooler for under 40 bucks

currently I am looking to replace the Pile of hydrocut alu-WhiteMetal crap that amd sent me for my phenom II x4 940
I am looking to clock this chip over 3.4
I have looked at the following

Arctic Freezer Pro 7/64
Scythe ninja 3
Scythe ZZ-samurai
I don't want a massive cooler and I would perfer a downblow unit to a tower

Towers really are the best option. Really, you'd be best off with a Scythe Mugen 2, Cooler Master Hyper 212+, or a Xigmatek HDT-S1283

Are you looking at 92mm size or 120mm?

You don't have to, at least with the Xiggy S1283, I don't know with the others. For good OCing, you'll really want a nice tower coolers, downdraft ones just aren't as good (for the most part)

I got the Arctic high end one (but less than 40 €) what's its name version 2, and it is absolutly silent and more than enough for a medium high overclock. And easy to clean, no screws involved. No need to take the mainboard off...

That doesn't worry me. Providing some thought has been put into the design of the mounting bracket and it has been properly installed, I think your motherboard will be old and faded long before the cooler wrenches it out of your case.

Some will work fine with 120mm tower coolers, some won't.

I suggest you beg, borrow and steal and buy something along the lines of an Antec 300. I don't like the idea of basing my choice of cooler on the constraints of your case, if it's as bad as you suggest (I assume the Antec's better).

ziggy dark knight ftw, my 3.2 quad is kept less than 46 under 100% load, 31 it got the other day with an ambient of 74. its a large tower, costs about 50 bucks, but it is a really good cooler, and i have seen people fit it in a mid tower, so extra money for awesome cooling. worth it

Unfortunately that is one of the ones that will not handle 120mm tower coolers, they stick ever so slightly too far out. You can get the side panel on(luckily the side panels are thin enough that they bend easily), but it is no ideal.

It is really sad that Rosewill did not make these cases a few mm wider, as that is all that would be required to fit 120mm tower coolers. However, other than that limit, they are very good cases, I use them all the time for my budget builds for clients. They actually have very good airflow.

So your options are 92mm coolers.

The ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 is one option, but a $36 price tag isn't worth it. In my experience the XIGMATEK HDT-SD964 is a better cooler and has a more budget friendly $28 price tag.

I will say, I do have a XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 crammed in that exact case right now and the side panel does fit on, but the cooler touches the side panel and slightly bows the side panel out.

As I said, your best option is probably the XIGMATEK HDT-SD964. That will easily fit in the case.

Or you can squeeze a XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 in, but as I said it the side panel will bow and be a pain in the ass to put on.

the side panel is a non issue as I already made a replacement for mine thats 4MM wider and 2MM thicker

Rocketfish RF-UPCUWR (rebadged Coolermaster Hyper TX3)
Rosewill RCX-ZAIO-92 (rebadged Akasa AK-965)

I had the older Intel only Rosewill rebadge of the Akasa AK-965 and it worked great for a lower power dual core (e5200 @ 3.75 GHz). However, I believe that any 92mm heat pipe tower is going to struggle with an overclocked Phenom II quad at full load. You might be able to squeeze 3.4 out if the voltage is low enough but it will be right at the 55-58C'ish threshold where Phenom II's start to become unstable overclocked.
