Opteron 165 v 3700 San Diego?

I currently have a 3700 SanDiego 2.2 Ghz CPU. I'm tempted by an Opteron 165 1.8ghz Dualcore jobbie. Main use for my PC is games although I do like to dabble with image manipulation with photoshop.

Question is, would the Opteron be faster/better than my Sandy? I've only just built this S939 rig and I'm on a budget so would this opty future proof me for a while?

Just to be different, I wouldnt change to the Opty especially if you have only recently upgraded to 939...why? because your 3700 will clock easily as high as the Opty if not higher and from what you have said most of your work/play is in single thredded apps, so basically you wont see any or much gain, of course if you have multiple apps open and you are doing pretty demanding things with them there will be an obvious boost with the dual core. There is a lot of new kit coming out over the next months from both AMD and Intel and most of it will be better/faster than the Opty and the competition will be such that they will hopefully be priced well also, so I would save the money for now and see whats about for the price in the spring but of course thats just my opinion.

Mmm, fair dos Tatty, that does make sense. I was tempted because of the limited availablity of S939 chips with dual-cores... but as you say, there ain't much that benefits from dual core yet. Yeah, sod it, think I'll hang fire and wait till after christmas.

For "all round use" there is no taking away from the fact that a dual core is much better, I just happen to think it's more cost effective to upgrade just the once, what I mean by that is that if you go out and get the Opty, you will be very happy with it, you will see no difference however in the vast majority of games you play but we dont just use PC's for games I appreciate but next year you may see some really fast new AMD chips or even cheaper faster C2D chips and think that you want one.

I would say that really depends....
You have to ask the question if you are going to keep this rig for a while or upgrade soon.

Like me, I keep my computers for 3-4 years, so I go all out like some here.
But I usually dont upgrade my rig (except my rig#2's GPU since I never got a new one for that build).
So if you are like this, you might want to go for the opty since it can def. clock very nicely.

However, if you are going to re-build soon, then dont bother with this.
Just wait until you re-build and get the best you can.

Just as a side note, I usually ask for some parts for my b-day and x-mas.
This allows me to get better and more high quality parts bc its all the little things that eat up our budget (HD, mouse, keyboard, sound card, speakers, etc).

Just ordered the Opty165, probably being a bit extravagant but what the hell, S939 Dual Cores are getting hard to come by and ain't cheap either, unlike this opty at £100. If I left it any longer a move to dualcore would involve CPU,MB and DDR2 Ram... at least, thats how I've justified it to myself, lol.

Komplett has 'em, but be quick if you want one.....Yesterday they had 47, today they have 30 left!

Opty all the way, it's dual core and it's basicly an FX 60. Plus your Sandy will bring around $50-$100 right now, so you wouldn't be paying that much more for the opty.

nice choice on the opty. not only will it oc better than your sandy, its dual core, so youre up to date.

Well, I've had my Sandy up to 2.75 Prime Stable so if it can get to that I'll be well happy, main reason was to get DualCore on a S939 without losing a kidney to pay for it so, job done. Now all we need is some games that will utilise it!

ive seen opty 165's up to 3.2 on air before, so you should be able to hit 2.75.

if its 2-2-2-6 i'm guessing its el, not tccd.
el is designed to run low latency, but low speed. tccd is designed to run medium to high latencies, but extremely high speeds.

Well, the Opty is here and installed, testing at the mo at 2.52Ghz with no problems so far. Came with a heatpipe HSF which was a nice little bonus.

Been doing some research and my Ballistix PC3200 has Micron 5B G chips. Running it at 280 FSB on a 9/10 divider @2-3-3-7, got through 3d05 and superpi without issue.

Got my 165 yesterday, and in fact it came with the 4-heatpipe cooler!!!! The stepping is CCBBE and it does show up as the Toledo core. Cant wait to see what its capable of!!!
P.S. I live in the midwest and mine shipped from CA.
