System Name Gaming PC
Processor Core i5-2500k
Motherboard Intel DH67BL
Cooling stock CPU fan
Memory 4GB DDR3 1333
Video Card(s) Radeon HD 6990
Storage Intel 120 GB SSD
Display(s) Samsung SyncMaster T260
Case NZXT Phantom (black)
Audio Device(s) on board
Power Supply Corsair TX750W
Software Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Radeon HD 6990 flickering non-stop in games when playing in full screen mode (WoW, Starcraft, Dragon Age, Mass Effect etc). :(

It looks like frames are sliding from top to bottom non-stop.
Vertical sync is enabled in Catalyst Control Center and in game video options but the flickering remains.

In window mode games run perfectly smooth without any problem but in full screen mode the non-stop flickering makes it not playable.

Anyone with Radeon HD 6990 running on windows 7 64 bit, please post if you can play games without flickering in full screen mode.
If other people don't have flickering problems then it's not a driver issue and that most likely means faulty hardware.

PC info:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
CPU: Core i5-2500k
Mainboard: Intel DH67BL
RAM: 4GB DDR3 1333
Graphics card: Radeon HD 6990
Display Driver: catalyst 11.4 (latest update 3/29/2011)
DirectX 11
PSU: Corsair TX750W

Hi Jerry, and welcome to TPU.
If you go into the UserCP and enter your system specs there, you won't have to retype them in the event you have other problems and ask for assistance.

I can't help you as I still run my old 4870x2, but someone will be along to assist you. :toast:

Thanks for the fast reply Kreij, I've been trying to get the card to work properly for over a week but no luck so far.
Hopefully someone here can help me out :)

Hey jerry, welcome to TPU home of the hardware spartans :)

Could you tell us what resolution you are using?

and when you mean flickering do you mean flashing or do you mean lag/frame tearing?

Hey Boss,
Resolution: 1920 / 1200
It looks like there are 2 sets of frames - stable frame in the background and another frame sliding from top to bottom non-stop.

Playing around with settings like Vertical sync change the speed of frames sliding from top to bottom.

I tried recording the flicking in fraps but the resulting video show smooth game-play

Are you on any medication ? (just kidding)

Maybe a problem with your monitor? Or the cabling to it?

did you completly uninstall the old drivers with driver sweeper then reinstallt he 11.4preview's possible try the 11.2's with a complete uninstall of 11.4's and waht might help the flicker is download the new 11.3 crossfire profiles, even if you dont have crossfire cards they help

Kreij,
I have no idea how come fraps can't record the flickering...
If it was a problem with the monitor or cables then why do games work fine in window mode?

Is it correct that crossfire is disabled in window mode and enabled in full screen mode?
GPU-Z show that crossfire is enabled (2 GPUs).

Marineborn,
I didn't use driver sweeper, I followed AMD instructions to install a new driver - uninstalling ATI Catalyst Install Manager and rebooting the PC before installing the new Catalyst package.
I tried 3 versions of CCC 11.4, every time AMD release an update I uninstall the old CCC package before installing the new CCC version.

I will try CCC 11.3, wish me luck! :p

Just out of curiosity, what happens if you play in window mode and maximize the window?

Games work fine in windowed (fullscreen) mode, tried it in wow and Mass Effect 2.
The problem exists only in fullscreen mode.

Not all games support windowed (fullscreen) mode and if the flickering is a result of faulty crossfire sync between the GPUs or something similar then I would like to replace the card.

disable vsync and try again? alt+enter to fullscreen

CCC 11.2 display driver is not compatible, the screen native resolution (1920 / 1200) wasn't in the resolution list.

CCC 11.3 works the same way as 11.4, works fine in windowed mode and windowed fullscreen (e.g. no border) but in full screen mode I get non-stop flickering. :(

The flickering happens with and without vertical sync enabled.

Edit: tried fraps in another game with the same result - the flickering is showing in game but not in the recorded video.

Before you bail on your card, do you have another card you can try (perhaps borrow if you don't have another) ?

What connection are you using twixt graphics card and monitor?

Kreij,
My old card is Radeon HD 4870x2, games works fine with it without any graphic issues.
But according to GPU-Z crossfire is disabled, even though there are 2 GPUs on the old card.

With the old card, Radeon HD 4870x2, performance in games feels slower then what it was on the old PC with the same card.
I think that just 1 GPU is used so it doesn't say anything about crossfire support on the new PC.

Edit: failure to get decent performance out of the old card in the new PC made me buy Radeon HD 6990, could it be that Intel DH67BL motherboard doesn't support cards with 2 GPUs?

tigger,
DVI cable connected to DVI port (no adapter).

Welcome Jerry!

Is the flickering anything like tearing? (Horizontal lines.)

I'd highly recommend removing your current drivers, then using a program such as CCleaner to give the registry a clean up once you've done so, then try reinstalling them. Another thing to look at would be if the manufacturer of the card has released a BIOS update or even one for your mainboard. I know Intel have had some issues with the 4870x2 on older mainboards.

Do you get the same problem if you try an older driver?
Try a really old driver, like 9.xx

I'm 95% sure that the problem is your PSU. It is only 750 watt's. The minimum for ATI 6990 is 750 watt's. I suggest upgrading between 850-1000 watt.

Make sure you are running the latest driver's as well.

Run some stress test's on your GPU (MSI Afterburner Kombuster) , GPU-ID , and HW Monitor.

Check your temps, voltages, fan speeds, etc. Try to pin point the errors or if you see anything out of the norm.

InnocentCriminal,
The flickering is not like tearing, it looks like there's a solid frame in the background and another frame sliding from top to bottom.
The frame that seems to slide from top to bottom blinks in and out of sight.

I used Driver Sweeper to completely remove ATI drivers and did a clean install of the drivers that came with the card, but the flickering in full screen mode remains the same.

I'm not sure about trying to replace the BIOS, never did it and don't wanna risk more problems.

Spectrum,
FPS in games is around 60 (that's max supported FPS by the monitor), performance is good.

Black Panther,
Old drivers are not compatible with Radeon HD 6990, even CCC 11.2 is too old.
If you mean to install old drivers for the old card Radeon HD 4870x2 then I don't see the point of trying to make it run well because I already bought a new high-end card.

alexsubri,
What program can test temps, voltages, fan speeds, etc?
Sorry for the n00b question but I'm new at hardware debugging. :p

I had this issue with my Crossfired 6870s and it happened randomly. League of Legends it happened in mostly and I would run it in a window to fix then the next time I load it up windowed I'd have to go fullscreen to fix it. Weirdest glitch, a driver update fixed it for me, but that isn't possible for u atm xD

During 3DMark Vantage test (with AUSUM on), there were a lot of tearing, sometimes it seemed like frames sliding from top to bottom but not always.

3DMark Vantage results:

Note that some info is not available, for example Core clock and Memory clock are at 0 MHz.

Switch Ausum off or any other mods off.

Edit: One thing I learnt from my 5970, dual GPU cards are temperamental

jerry just a wild guess as it might help, download the 11.3 profiles for crossfire from the amd website, you dont need to have the 11.3 drivers thell atach themselves to any drivers and you dont need to do anything once there installed just give it a run ok. the 11.3 crossfire profiles. just a hunch
