OFFICIAL Elder Scrolls V : Skyrim (Discussion)

Hey guys, I'm back from trying to fix crossfire for skyrim and here are my final results:

I know there are the 11.11b drivers out there for CF users which is supposed to fix the scaling issue for now... But there have been a lot of dissapointed users out there... because appearantly the driver ain't working as expected...

I made a few discoveries of my own which I hope will help some of you guys out:

The drivers that seem to work best (in terms of stability and perf.) CF on or off are ---> 11.9
The best CF fix I've found (and believe me when I tell you I have tried everything) is this:

---> Use Radeon pro to create a custom profile for CF. Make it a AFR (alternate frame rate) profile FRIENDLY d3d... set everything else to general (or use application settings...) With that, and the 11.9 drivers, I am finally getting a 50-60 FPS all around in skyrim, which makes the experience WAY smoother for me now... I had to lower the "ugridstoload" setting back to 7 instead of 9... Because 9 makes my FPS go avg 30-45...

I've found a GREAT solution to those of you who are now stuck on a particular GRID setting because you can't change the grid settings because you can't load your saved game anymore...

Here's the link to the fix (it's like 3 lines to read don't worry): http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1275758-tweaks-compilation

Read the first RED lines you come across in that link and there's the fix (Worked for me great)
After doing that fix, your skyrim.ini file gets refreshed... Most of you previous settings are going to be intact, but you might wanna surf through the .ini just to make sure your main tweaks are still there (which I haven't had any problems with...)

Let me know if it helped ;O)

I feel so stupid. Was reading online and discovered that you can sprint in the game by pressing the Alt key. I'm already 70 hours into the game and never bothered to check the controls :o

Don't feel bad. Took me forever to realize that too

lol I don't blame you, oblivion didn't really have sprint either took me a while to figure out they added it into Skyrim. This game is missing a good amount of helpful tool tips >.<

You can run ambient occlusion with the patcher. Just set the compatibility to Oblivion. Doesn't even hurt my frame rate but makes a big difference on grass. This is with 20000 shadows, ENB, and nvidia's AO + shadow fix from 290.36

Hoping to sort out 5000 CF Skyrim this week - as always once it's ready I'll let everyone know

meh dosent matter

Bethesda fully endorses the 4gb Skyrim mod.

that 4gb mod

breaks Ambient Occlusion override for Nvidia users

it breaks any and all GPU driver optimizations made by AMD for single or dual gpu systems aka crossfire dosent work,

it breaks Radeon Pro's ability to Force crossfire profiles, because you cant rename the exe launched by the 4gb mod, to take advantage of profiles.

All in all bethesda most likely wont fix this, and were all pretty much shit out of luck. go figure only way to get everything working properly is to acquire the game elsewhere. and then rename those exe's which from what i understand still works for now

I do have the original, pre-18Mb patch .exe, if anyone needs it. I had been using the bypass-steam method since the second or third day, so never got hit with the rogue patch. Been using the LAA patch for almost as long, and runs smooth. I had one crash, after leaving the game running for several hours during some errands and chores. Otherwise, stable, crash-wise... Still got the glitching water, and occasional airborn moment (got a ss somewhere of me on the horse about 50 feet in the air, standing there heheh), but otherwise good. Haven't tried the 11b patch yet for Crossfire.

Heheh you can also make your horse gallop with the same key ;)

oh i'm not the only one with the airborn movement? i had this freaky moment of swimming around headless while a dragon chased me breathing fire.

i've had dreams like that before, so i figured i was just tripping out at the time.

i gave in and tried the 4GB launcher, and all my crashes are fixed.

annoyingly, there goes crossfire :(

You should be able to run both of the cards without any trouble because even on 910/1430 clocks on my 6950's I am still reading 100% GPU utilization on both cards while running the 11.11b performance drivers and using the 4GB launcher from Skyrim Nexus so perhaps try that?

6K is not 5K. i need new drivers.

Even for 6K, it's not quite that great...

There has been A LOT of in-game rendering corruption for me... Weird texture behavior and flashing shadows and unsteadiness (CTDs) when I installed 11.11b

But I hear that it actually works for some people :O(

all of my texture issues were because of crossfire, when i disabled that they stopped. however, i'm still on 11.9 - with the issues i'm hearing should i bother upgrading yet?

Don't bother, you have HD 5000 series cards. The "fixes" only affects the HD 6000 series cards when in Crossfire.

Yeah it's fine here; no visual corruption and crossfire is working as well if not better than with RP Oblivion profile. FWIW, did a clean install including TwL cleaner but can't say for sure if that helped or not.

Hey BP is this "sprint" different from the "run"? I have to assume you haven't been walking everywhere for 70 hours (e.g. the sloooow speed you travel at when carrying too much) but I also find it hard to believe there's a faster movement option of which I wasn't aware either. There is a "Always run" option I use I think it's Caps Lock.

Yes, the "sprint" is different from the "run". If you have running as your default movement, then that's the "run" when you move around. Hold down shift when moving (or toggle with Caps Lock) and you "walk". Hold down Alt when moving would make your character "sprint". Also applies to horses.

Well shit. I assume this uses stamina?

So I guess while on horseback you're using the horse's stamina... :D

Yes. That's why there's an advantage with having Shadowmere: he has more stamina, and therefore can sprint for longer than the other horses. He also has more health, handy when you're under attack while exploring and riding Shadowmere.

Damn. But better knowing late than never and it's not as though I could've been saving much time by sprinting from location to location all the time anyway. However, it definitely has it's great uses offhand such as more quickly closing in on an archer or mage hurling projectiles.

Nor have I spent much time on horseback yet. Speaking of which, if I own the horse it won't take off when I dismount, right? And will it stay put right there unless attacked or something?

sprinting also opens up extra attack possibilities: power attacks are modified by sprinting and there are perks that add to it.

Interesting. If this is in the manual I missed it.

i thought it told me in game, i rarely read manuals. i could be wrong of course ;)
