OFFICIAL Battlefield 4 (Discussion)

It took them 5+ years to go from BF2 to BF3. Don't believe in any drastic engine changes within 2 years. Specially in the most demanding areas like netcode or PB.

engadget - Talking Frostbite, Battlefield 4 and Mirror's Edge 2 with EA DICE's big boss (video)

EA's DICE studio is the motor that powers several of gaming's most popular franchises. Need for Speed and Battlefield are just two of the enormous series that DICE's Frostbite engine is behind, and EA's pledged the engine's support to many more of its titles. It's with these things in mind that we met up with DICE General Manager Karl Magnus-Troedsson at E3 2013, where we discussed Frostbite 3, Frostbite Go, Battlefield 4 and even a little Mirror's Edge 2 for good measure.

Troedsson had a headline spot during EA's E3 stage briefing, where he helped to narrate a live demo of a 64-player match. Beyond a showcase for Battlefield 4, the presentation was perhaps the most stunning demonstration to date of the DICE studio's Frostbite engine and the power it's able to wield when harnessed by skilled developers. And for the first time ever on next-gen consoles, Battlefield's console versions (at least the next-gen ones) are identical with that of the PC one. Massive online battles and incredible in-game events -- such as a Shanghai skyscraper being brought toppling down, all while naval scraps and helicopter dogfights are taking place -- are possible on both PC and the next-gen boxes from Microsoft and Sony. We discuss all that and more with Troedsson in the video we've dropped just below the break.

Be careful the Rock is gonna put the smack down on ya'll. I do have to say when I mentioned glass half empty guys a couple pages back it has risen again :) I wouldn't go as far as to call him another Orhan yet though. For one he would have to come stab me 100 times to be anywhere near another Orhan:laugh:
Maybe he just hates American's. Which is OK because almost all the people I hate are American's:nutkick:

I'm afraid you may be right. They could have changed the detection back to client-side at least though.

P.S. He participated.

IMHO, Now that Frostbite is an EA Corporate engine, other programming teams beyond DICE can contribute changes to it, so changes may happen at a faster pace. and we want hit detection on the server, in BF3 it was client side.

That's what I was thinking. There has to be more then just DICE working on this engine. Not to mention DICE is much larger now.

Its a good thing I had few issues with PB or "netcode" in BF3. It also helps to know we are going from Frostbite 2 to 3 which was already admitted to be a list of improvements.

Realistic expectations will lead you to not being disappointed.

Oops yes I meant back to server-side above. And I personally don't have any problems with PB either but plenty do and it just seems so old and tired by now. I mean I hope EB updates it more often than their circa-2000 website! ;)

I have heard from several sources that BF4 supports embedded VOIP for commander to squad leaders, and possibly squad leaders to squad. welcome back to 2005, DICE! We missed you.

Wait, did they sneak the Yao Ming laughing pic in there on that red sign? Those cheeky bastards.

At first glance I thought that might be Chinese Colonel Sanders.

BF4 needz to invade North Korea!!!!!! VOIP directly to Kim II !!!!

:)

DICE already confirmed this on the live stream. Thought everyone knew.

It wasn't getting the attention it deserved. When I sat down and thought about what was not right about BF3, the most glaring omissions were things which which impeded teamwork, like lack of VOIP. I can remember in bf2, hopping from squad to squad, looking for one where people were talking.. Even if I didn't talk, I coul contribute to squad goals, and get positive feedback.
That makes it so much more rewarding..

Sounds pretty awesome. I found out about Battlefield in their 3rd installment, I'm getting giddy just thinking about when 4 gets released later this year. The Commander mode seems cool to an extent, but VOIP from squad leaders makes it a much more strategically sound game. Hopefully everything gets ironed out by release and even if it doesn't, I'd rather wait until they got a proper stable game.

Pre-ordered it for the PS4. Just can't get into the BF series on PC oddly.

Why?

If it's because you have no friends to play with, just add them as you go. Most of my friend list (like 75%) on BF3 is just from random pubs who actually worked with me (and I with them) in a squad. Some are talkative in the chat, others are not.

Actually the hit detection in BF3 is a combination of Client side and server side hit detection, not that its particularly good,i commonly get killed after getting behind cover and commonly do the same to other people.

It's a game I prefer with a controller.

^THIS

Is kinda sad....

Obviously you are entitled to your own opinions and its not up to me to tell you how you to or how you should play the game but there are honestly so many TPU members that play BFBC2 and BF3. Ive jumped on TS and had a few games with them many times and it is a hell of a lot of fun, but to simply just pre-order the game for PS4 because you prefer to play on a gamepad is a sorry excuse.

Everyone else is getting it on PC so why isolate yourself from everyone else by getting it on PS4??? Just get a PC compatible PS3 or PS4 controller and map the controls.

BF3 was pretty much already configured and ready to go with an xbox 360 controller when the game was launched so I dont see why you cant just remap controls to your controller when the game comes out
