Is it still possible to play modern games on a Phenom II x6?

Software Argh, Windows 10. I hated Windows 7. I hate Windows 10 more. Give me back XP!!!
So right before x-mas my motherboard died.

I RMAed it to ASUS and they sent me back a replacement.

The replacement is an R2.0 version but I think it should be close enough to the original.

Anyway, at some point between when I took my FX-6300 out of the old motherboard and and when I received the replacement motherboard some of the pins got bent.

I didn't have the original packaging for the CPU so I put it up on a shelf over my desk where I though it would be safe wrapped in an anti-static bag.

When I tried to bend the pins back I got most of them straight but I ended up breaking 2 of them off.:banghead::cry:

I tried the processor anyways and of course it doesn't work.

Luckily I have an old Sempron 145 I pulled out of an old pre-built that I was able to throw in my computer to get it back up and running with the new motherboard.

But now I have to find something better because that Sempron isn't going to play any games.

I found someone selling a Phenom II x6 1090T really cheap and it is about the best I can afford right now.

So my question is can the processor even handled modern games?

Also, how badly will it hold back my SLI GTX 660 video cards?

I'm mainly playing BF4 and Skyrim right now and I just got a 2560x1440 monitor for x-mas.

That 1090T is still a strong CPU. With a lil' OC love it will run them 660's pretty well. You can do a LOT WORSE than a 1090T. Its still a good CPU.

Using an 1100T here. I can play anything out there no issues.

Go for it and have 6 real cores.

Before it was "visited by lightning", I was running an 1100T @ 4.1GHz and 3.8GHz NB. Was great, all games ran fine and it handled everything I threw at it.

Get the 1090T, cool it well, and OC it. Will be great :)

Could you show us the location of the broken pins? You could try soldering them from a donor cpu, or you could try the wire trick on the motherboard. Just need to locate the holes into which those pins went when the cpu was put in it's place and put some short pieces of wire or sewing needle so that it makes contact between the socket and the cpu and it should work :).

Same here. It's still rather strong. Using mine in an ASRock 990FX Extreme9 with no issues at all.

X4 980 still plays well BF4 with the right hardware, like others mentioned the 1090T should work fine as long as you OC close to 4 ghz.

It's possible that your CPU might work even without those pins if they are extra grounds or unconnected.

See if you can get a pinout diagram for the CPU to check this. If so, give it a go.

It is no good. Let me give you my address so you can ship that useless cpu to me ;). I will dispose of it for you. :D

Good cpu.

My secondary PC has a Q9550 that has 2 core less, everything runs fine so far, i wonder how long it will last, i blame consoles.:p

I haven't found a real reason to upgrade from mine yet, it has worked great in all the games I play.

Well yes it is a bit old, and compared to "Nehalem" it ultimately lost. but it proved to be a worthy competitor to Lynnfeild, and it's IPC proved to better than or equal to a Bulldozer CPU, to which Piledriver (which is the very latest) improved upon. My A8-3850 has those cores, and their still quiet capable.

Should be good to go. I had a phenom 2 quad core for a while and loved it haha
