Assuming it isn't behind a NAT router (if it is, the IP the computer is on is DMZ'd), it is plugged into the internet, and there is a network driver installed, it won't last an hour before it gets infected. Sasser worm (and a few similar ones) seek out vulnerable computers an infect it. Windows, prior to SP2, had no firefall so there is nothing to stop it.

i was thinking of just setting it to dmz but i really dont want this on my side of the network so its just getting the cable modem direct.

many virus and spywares use the net connection so just unplug the lan cable from computer and restart it. After computer restart then start cleaning.

I tried exactly this several years ago on an unpatched XP (original version, no SP no patches) test PC. And no, it didn't take long at all. I started getting all manner of popups on my desktop, there was constant low level network activity, it was sluggish and behaved strangely. It was a real mess after just a few hours online.

Got wiped immediately I finished testing.

I have never failed at cleaning a PC that I wanted/needed to clean. Having said that, it has only been a few that I did that to, and some took a day of work to clean and put back into good working order.

Yeah...a day to search and destroy or ~8 hours (mostly unattended) to erase and install. I usually recommend the latter because there's nothing left of any malware after that.

The only way to be 100% sure malware has been removed is to format and reinstall (or use a clean disc image).
