Making the case for a console over a PC with Far Cry 4

Can you see why some gamers just get a console over a PC to avoid the hassle?

So this is essentially a console vs. PC thread, with a game plagued with bugs on both sides, not only that, but a game from Ubisoft, and we should all know what they are capable of these days (not much).
Meaning?

Actually, it's you that's pointless. Now stop trolling and get off my thread. :slap:

Thread that is beating a dead horse for the thousandth time? Consider me gone.

Consider me gone.
Yay, thankyou so much! :toast:

No beating of a dead horse. If you'd have actually comprehended my OP you would have known what this thread was about. Whatever.

Sorry for the double post people, but I don't want to taint this post with the previous one.

Great news: I'm actually, finally, able to play the game properly and make some progress! :D

I discovered that the intermittent game startup lockups were most likely caused by MSI Afterburner. It also locked up while I was moving around the map. It started working straight away after I stopped running Afterburner, however. Naturally, it carried on working when I restated Afterburner just to muddy the water. However, I was running version 4.0.0 and there's a 4.1.0 which I installed and so far so good.

Yeah, the game saves really suck, but that's the way the game is designed unfortunately. Basically, it looks like if you die during a mission, you restart from the latest checkpoint, which is what you want. However, saving the game and going to the master menu forgets those checkpoints and drops you back to the start of the mission. Why the hell Ubisoft would do this I have no idea, but it's dumb and inconvenient. I'll look out for this "feature" when considering the next Ubisoft game and may well avoid it. Never mind, I paid a lot of money for it and the gameplay is good, so I'll persevere.

Finally, the PC still has its slight stability issues, especially when going into sleep mode, but there's no rush to fix this (I have better things to do) and doesn't impact the game. I'll start another thread about it if necessary as it's unrelated to FC4.

This game ran fine on my pc. Game is lame though so I only wasted 5 hours on it or so.

I never understand all the pc Vs console tripe. To get the most from your gaming and what is out there you really have to be a PC gamer as well as a console gamer. I consider myself a dedicated gamer. I play games on anything.

I like the Sony store a whole lot more than Steam. I like getting free games every month too. there are certain games I prefer to play on console mainly Bioware and Bethesda games. I like Mass Effect on console because I like to play with the controller and the Mako in the PC version is bugged. I don't have the patience to read or watch videos on Youtube to figure out what mods I need to install to get Skyrim/Fallout to work properly on my PC. nothing wrong owning a console too.

Well, 95% of the mods for fallout 3, fnv, skyrim are not about fixing things. They are about adding a shitload of new content to the game, as well as better graphics. So you're missing out really by doing those titles on console.

when I set the refresh rate in Fallout or Skyrim to 120hz... the audio is messed up...time/movement speed is literally doubled...animals spawn in the sky and fall... game crashes. I get a headache when I play games in 60hz on LCD monitors.

i'm not missing out on anything either.. Fallout is one of my favourite series :p

Funny, I was just saying on the official Ubi forum for the game where there's a lot of people crying foul about still not being able to launch the game that it very well could be software conflicts. I assumed from what you said earlier that you could run it and were primarily having save issues. Had I known there were launch/lockup problems, I'd have echoed what I said about checking background programs.

Glad you got it running, it's a fun game to play. I'll be sure to mention what you said about Afterburner 4.0.0 to see if it corrects anyone else's problems.

It makes perfect sense for people who don't want to open up a pc case and fill it with doohickeys etc, Also: the price of whatever console plus fc4 probably works out cheaper (including having a warranty) than buying up all the pc parts to get graphics and gameplay on a par with the console.

It was primarily save issues, but then the game started crashing up on startup, just to add to the fun. I did write all down, but never mind, I appreciate your intention to help. :toast:

Yes, it looks like a good game now I can actually play it!

I certainly can see why people prefer consoles. Even disregarding cost reasons (which aren't that much different IMO) I've seen that people just don't like dealing with technology... what you say? Are you crazy? Every person walks around with some technology!! Well, yes but people just like the services that said technology brings to them not the technology in itself. They just want to flip a switch and have things work, in the moment you start dropping jargon on their faces you've lost them.

Long ago I was at the game store once and heard a young lady buying an Xbox 360 and asked how to connect it to the TV. The sales guy told her "oh, you just match the color of the plug to the ports on the back of your TV" and she asked if there was a service for setting up the console because "she wasn't sure she could handle that" and I was like WTF? :banghead: I know that anecdotes =/= data but I notice that even with friends and co-workers. I often have people calling me because stheir computer won't do X or Y thing and want me to troubleshoot over the phone (don't you hate being that guy?) I start asking for details and they just go ballistic thinking I'm just beating around the bush. People just don't understand technology and can't be bothered to do so but it has become a huge part of our lives.

mm I don't know about costs being similar, if going completely apples for apples..think of cpu/gpu noise..i have to admit I haven't heard a ps4 or xbox1 but i'd imagine they would be quitter than your average pc, if the pc isn't watercooled, or with expensive air cooled solutions...further pushing the price up. Don't get me wrong, i'll happily game on a quiet pc that sees out a few generations of console then just change up the GPU/CPU but I reckon all things considered, consoles would be much cheaper.

Well building a PC that would exceed consoles wouldn't be more than $600 just for the rig. Thanks to Steam Big Picture a keyboard would only be needed for the initial setup and you don't need to buy a monitor, just plug it into your TV and that's that.

Besides most households already have a PC so dropping a $200 GPU on them would be the fastest way to have a decent "gaming" PC. With the current Intel architectures even a lowly Pentium is able to drive lots of games at >30fps so you don't even need a top of the line pre-built. There's the issue about PSU capacity but a GTX 960 will happily run on a basic system with a 300w PSU and provide better specs than any console.

The thing is you have to invest time AND acquire knowledge for the setup and that just puts people off.

the thing I have always thought was crap is why you cant get slit screen going on a pc.. most fun about the consoles.

I might give a ps5 a go when it comes..

From what I understand, the Far Cry 4 PC issue seems to mainly affect Nvidia GPU based systems. Kinda funny considering FC4 uses "Nvidia Gameworks" which optimizes the game for Nvidia Hardware. I played on my AMD GPU based rig and have had NO crashes the entire time I played it. On other tech sites like PCPer and Tek Syndicate I see threads about the Nvidia Gameworks and FC4 issues.

That is because the games physics engine and what not is tied to the refresh rate.

Seems to be a trend with Gameworks and Ubisoft. Gameworks is really just a collection of Libraries of Nvidia specific features. Its up to Ubisoft to implement it. Every Ubisoft game that has released in the last year or so that is a Gameworks title, has had problems.

Well, having played it for a bit, I keep getting killed really easily, causing me to come to the terribly embarrassing realization that I'm a bit hopeless at it at the moment!

Now making some effort to memorize more of the controls and read through that neat built in manual.

^If you need any tips just fire away qubit. There's lots of ways to make life easier in Kyrat. ;)

Oh, I need some tips alright! It's really hard at the moment. I'll get back to you later when I have some time to play it. :)

With many guards around I'd stay hidden taking them one by one with stealth kills and distract them by throwing rocks. But before anything, scout with binoculars and mark every enemy to track them.

I agree with marking completely because it allows you to plan the phases of your assault on the soldiers and keep track of their location in the battle. I differ because I never distract them. I go in guns blazing. I will have sniped some of the closer targets, and then move in, concentrating on whomever is sending the most lead my way. Finally, the elphant charging does awesome damage on the final few.

I also use an elephant most of the time because they are a huge combat multiplier! An additional benefit is protection from animals. Even tigers will give elephants a wide berth.

Well, you can't play Xbox 1 games on Xbox 360

Yes you can, but it is a very small list for official support. Some 360s will have issues because Microsoft took down the download for it, and some 360 HDDs do not have the partition for the files. This does not include what you can do if you have a modded 360.
