Will FX-8120 Bottleneck a GTX 1060?

Hello all.

I am super close to buying a GTX 1060. Close as in, I might buy one tonight. However it hit me today that my CPU might hold it back. I currently run an FX-8120 with a GTX 680.

Should I go ahead and order? I really want to upgrade but am wondering if/how bad my CPU will bottleneck this card.

It will probably be a small bottleneck, depending on the game.

If you overclocked it a little it would be better.

Yes and it's better if you overclock it as far as you can with that motherboard. 1060 has about GTX 980 perf so it needs a strong CPU to be feeded from.

4.5 minimum, 5 GHz+ maximum, but bottleneck either way, the 1080 or 980 Ti / 1070 is just too much for any AMD cpu at this moment. DX12 + Vulcan powered games are a exception from this.

Just hold off on the new GPU and upgrade to Zen in a few months.
By then the prices of all Paxwell cards should fall, and so get a better deal.

Default clock for 8350 is 4.0GHz, Turbo is 4.2

Id run your 8320 at 4.2 and see how it does. 4.5 is easy to obtain

Ya it will bottleneck that card, my mate has the 8120 and a GTX 970 (basically a GTX 1060) and it bottlenecks that card at stock clocks by at least 20FPS compared to my stock 8350.

While it will bottleneck the card, at least it means that you'll see less framerate drops as you turn up resolution and details, because it's dropped already. Kinda sucks, I know.

No, a FX 8120 will not bottleneck a 1060. It will benchmark lower than an i5 or i7? yes slightly

SO to put it another way. You probably wont notice the difference, but its there.

I also want to point out that bottleneck is a useless term.

Yes, it will. One of my PCs has an FX-8320E @ 4.2 Ghz and a GTX 970. The CPU bottlenecks the GPU there and the GTX 1060 is stronger still. But then again, you won't have any point of comparison so you probably won't notice (I've swapped the GPU out to a Haswell Refresh i5 and i7 PC so I have).
