I mean no offense to anyone who has had bad luck with unstable drivers but I personally have been running amd card for 2 years and haven't experienced these unstable drivers

was it a clean install? If its not I would run DDU and then try again, when I had my 290 I didn't have an issue with any drivers and neither has my buddy who owns the 290 now and my brother is still using my old 280X and that is running crazy good still

Then you should run ddu, it fixes sometimes what the driver installer cant uninstall.

I actually had to drop back to 17.2.1 so that I could play Wolfensein: The New Order, as there is an issue with the driver and some cards which means the game crashes before you get to the Bethesda logo

There's no single correct answer to this question, because as always with GPU drivers, it depends what games you're playing. AMD just released 17.6.1, and 17.6.2. The 17.6.1 driver is specifically to optimize overall performance in DiRT 4. The 17.6.2 driver adds further DiRT 4 improvements regarding use of 8xMSAA.
That said, after downloading and installing 17.6.2 from AMD's site, GPU-Z shows it as 17.6.1. This has happened with one or two previous versions of their drivers, but I'm not sure if it's a glitch on AMD's part, or the way GPU-Z is reading it.
I played several rally stages of the first part of DiRT 4 on it last night though with no problems so far, and my GPU (7970) is older than yours, so. That said, I installed and am running DiRT 4 in W7 compat mode, which might also be best option for Wolf: The New Order. I am currently setting about testing that theory, will report back.

OK, here's me reporting back on this as promised. I just installed and launched W: TNO in W7 compat mode, and it's not crashed once. I'm up to the 2nd checkpoint in the part where you're tasked by Anna's dad to "kill them all".
At first it seemed like it didn't run as well as on W7, but once I did the trick where you make a Wolfenstein The New Order folder inside a MachineGames folder in AppData>Local, then the forced caching really improves performance.
This is on 17.6.2 btw, or 17.6.1 as GPU-Z calls it.

I have no problems getting it to run on the older driver (I can basically max everything at 1080p) but for what ever reason, it has issues with newer driver and nothing I did (including that tweak and running in win 7 compatibility mode did nothing) allowed the game to start.

nope. ( CTD and TDR were two abreviation that my Radeons card never heard ... or OC instability due to a driver ...

i had less unstable drivers with AMD than i ever had with Nvidia ... heck i am even still under 376.53 for that same reason ... Nvidia driver superiority is a freaking cliché
well for me it's not a question of fanboyism but rather a question of personal experiences

Something being a cliche doesn't make it wrong. Also, just because you've had lots of problems with NVIDIA drivers doesn't mean they're problematic generally, as most people don't have so many problems with them. There could easily be an issue with your system that's causing issues, for example.
On the upside for AMD, I haven't seen so many people reporting issues with them lately, so they must have improved a fair bit.
