Can't get this i7 2600k to budge when trying to oc

Okay so I've decided to give OC a go as I was given an old i7 2600k cpu for my p8p67 pro mobo but no matter what I change in the bios I can't seem to get it to show in windows 7 64bit. In the bios it tells me my target is 4.5ghz after adjusting settings but when I boot into windows and run cpuid and then do a stress test it doesn't budge from the 3.4ghz.
I'm very new to OC and have never done it before but from what I have read it's pretty straight fwd on these mobos to get some sort of an overclock.
Any suggestions would be great.
 
What settings are you changing exactly?
 
Watch a video or two. DONT copy what values are entered, but rather the methods ussd, as no one setting is good for all pc's

i cant speak towards the experience, or ability to the creator of the video below, as i just linked the first one i found for your Board, but the general idea is there. Remember, research until you KNOW what the settings do, and the effect they will have, THEN input the changes. That is the best way to avoid having to create a "i f@cked up my PC" thread. Good Luck & be sure your saving your settings when you exit Bios.

wasnt there drama about the microcode updates in windows 10 breaking OC on certain older platforms?

Try a bootable linux or a windows 7 install with no internet, and see if the clock speeds work correctly there - if they do, you'll need to mod your BIOS or deal with a bootable launcher someone came up with here on TPU


My advice would be to start with a lower overclock like 4GHz to make sure you're doing it right, as if you set unsuitable settings the PC could be loading defaults on reboot

The best overclock I've been comfortable with on my 2600K and my P67 mobo is setting bclk to 103 and multiplier to 43. Gives a decent 4.43GHz OC. I'd start with that.

I've tried aiming for 4.5GHz, but setting manual voltages always results in system instability for me (not sure why, also new to overclocking).
 
he's unable to even get any OC setting applied. i feel like there is a step missing, as OP is a beginner to OC. no biggie, a little research will fix it, and determine if im correct or not.

which is why i linked to the bootloader thread - people there had a windows update break their OCing on older platforms, but it was mobo specific which ones were affected, not chipset or CPU
 
@Mussels I thought that was... x99 boards? I believe @xkm1948 suffered from that issue.

Likely micro-code conflicts between OS and MoBo.

Maybe try manually injecting newest micro-code for that specific CPU? Risky but worth a try.

edit: nvm this is Win7. My problem is Bug10.

All that microcode stuff shouldn't affect him (to my understanding). He should try a lower OC like the one I suggested and see if that works.

I'm not arguing that there is or isnt an issue with certain motherboards. I'm simply advocating that he try the simplest thing first, which is to educate himself on the process he endeavors to take on , since it could be something as simple as him not hitting save when he exits the UEFI. instead of putting the cart before the horse

I think we're all in accord for simple first, such as going for a lower OC to verify things work

Something as simple as raising the multi 3x without touching any other settings is enough there
 
Ok thanks for all of the replies, I have followed and tried about 4 different OC videos with no luck using the same board and cpu, and yes I'm saving after making the changes, although I haven't over clocked before (never had a need to) I do have plenty of experience using and have built a few pcs etc in my time. So am use to checking my settings etc. I'll try a very low over clock and see what happens, every method I have seen for this board and cpu suggest leaving the bclk at 100

no offense intended, i hope none was perceived. 9/10 times, its the simple things that are causing the issues....:rolleyes:
keep at it, im certain you'll find out the culprit. as mentioned by others, there could be software issues, hell even your Bios Version might need updating (if your comfortable with that)

be sure your starting off from all default settings, so nothing is hindering your progress.
 
Your motherboard has an automatic OC switch(TPU). Which will guarantee you a safe low OC. Automatically. No work involved. Why not just use that and call it a day? It's a good place to start...if nothing else.

It's because no matter the OC, it isn't seeming to stick
 
Biso is updated to latest version available never had an issue doing those. It's very weird that I can't get the multiplier to change in windows when stress testing yet in the bios everything looks ok. Have reset to defaults having tried different oc methods for this cpu and board with a fresh reset after each try. For your own sanity, please don't touch the BCLK.

The fact that the CPU stays at 3.4GHz, not even turboing up to 3.8GHz as it would normally, suggests that something (probably another BIOS setting) is hard limiting its frequency. If you post pictures of the relevant BIOS screens we can help you better. You could also try a CMOS clear to reset the BIOS to its default values.

How is he overclocking using a P67 ?

Thought only Z68 can OC.

P67 definitely overclocked sandy and ivy, the reputation was harmed due to the sata controller issues on P67, so the Z naming was used from that point onward

What stress test ? I would recommend using RoG Real Bench w/ HWiNFO as the monitoring tool

My son has a 2600k at 4.8 Ghz ...temps are about 72-78 on the cores
