Staff members are allowed personal opinions, too. He was borderline attacking anyone who disagreed with him, because a laptop suits him. What was the message of his post, beyond "don't you dare do this, i like my laptop" ?

Surely the point here is not whether laptops are 'better' than desktops, but how laptops manufacturers push out some of their products at exorbitant prices whilst underpowering them?
Of course, we all know the reasons, but those who are not tech-savvy don't realise that running Windows 10 on a spinner and 4GB of RAM is akin to torture nowadays. It's only when they get home having opened up the shiny box do they realise the ripoff.

thay do it because thay can, respect for the customer only gos so far. me if i dont like what thay do i dont buy. i like to see a few vids of the inside before i makes me mind up because it saves disspointment.

Yeah it's pretty weird how some manufacturer decide stuff, like my Acer Triton 500 2020 model comes with undervolting unlocked BIOS, meanwhile the Helios 300 2020 model are BIOS locked out of undervolting ? The Helios 300 2019 model with 9th gen Intel also has unlocked BIOS .
It's like take a stab in the dark when buying Laptop these days. I bought my Triton 500 6 months ago and there has yet to be a review for it, luckily it turns out to be awesome, yay...

I've owned 5 HP laptops and most were utter garbage lol, they worked but had no driver support so features died off rapidly over time - my current one cant even work properly in windows 10... "off" means "drain the battery and refuse to turn on until you plug and replug it" yet it doesnt have that issue with linux :/

Why didn't you buy another brand then ? Although I also bought a HP Pavilion 14in in 2017 for my wife that has an upgradable RAM slot and M.2 slot, that laptop took so many abuse from my wife and still live strong today (yeah my wife uses the laptop as a bed lamp )

free, second hand. i helped a recycling center sort out electronics, and i frankesteined a lot of laptops back together... and for whatever reason all the local businesses used HP laptops

Well what do we have here it looks like a bunch of HP bashers. From experience HP is a pretty reliable brand. this laptop that I have now I have only had 5 months now so far and is my first laptop. Every HP I have owned Has been great except for one bad one several years ago.

I'll happily bash the ones i had, from faulty wifi cards to dying batteries, dual GPU setups that simply didnt work, and over 2/3 had the dedicated GPU die
Mine were second hand so i had no warranty, but thats still a hell of a lot of failures... it's not bashing to state personal history with a brand or product

I've had HP laptops but the elitebook brand, its their business line of laptops. My sister has had 2 HP laptops, both garbage. The elitebook business line is rock solid when I last had them, last time was 6 years ago.
Normal HP laptop are crap, their business line are better but not for my needs.

As if hardwired BGA processors weren't bad enough; memory failures down the line mean that you replace the whole motherboard, and hardwired memory only adds to its cost.

it saves them $ plain and simple. Don't need small extra time to mount the dimm socket to the board, don't need to buy extra socket. You think "o it only saves them 5cents or what ever per laptop" well when you multiply that over say 100k laptops it starts to add up.

LOL, the greatest offensive laptop maker should be Dell, their laptop have hidden EC that once triggered will limit Intel CPU from 45W TDP down to 15W, just ask TPU software guru @unclewebb and he will give everyone a reason to stay the hell away from Dell laptop.

It’s his first HP consumer laptop so I’d just let it go.

How do you intend to mechanically make ultrathin products? Why mobile phone/tablet creations have kinda worked for years with the same failure figures as any other HW?

While upgradeability is really a nice thing... but it is not really needed and we can point the finger at Apple products, people don't care for it, people still buy them despite the draconic rules and hefty pricing for upgrades.

It is the way the world works, get over it. Most people doesn't even care. Laptop is treated a whole unit like an Ipad. Many people don't even touch the idea that it even could be taken apart.

It wasn't an ultrathin, it was a 15.6-inch babushka, neither too cheap, nor too expensive (~$700-ish). There's enough empty space in the chassis to hide a body.

I need some clarification on that. As I speak Russian also, I cannot grasp the connection in between grandmother and that, it means just an old laptop?

Also if you remember, there was a total lack of CPU's in past years, people made things from everything they had on their hands. I am just saying, there's nothing bad in BGA based CPU's or RAM, as long it is plenty for it's suited task it is designed for.

I've lost count of the amount of HP laptops come into my workshop that have failed literally within weeks of the warranty expiring. It sounds uncanny, but unfortunately, true.
Or overheating GPUs which then require reballing, a process that doesn't come with guaranteed success and longevity.
It's sad that I have to report DOAs so often with laptops, whereas with desktops there are at least multiple options for breathing life into the patient.

But this is our fault! Consumers keep demanding notebooks be thinner and lighter - and less expensive too. So how do manufacturers accomplish that? By using fewer parts - parts that take up space, add weight and must be purchased or manufactured. RAM slots (and CPU sockets) add height and weight and are not free.

I'm not so sure it is what consumers are demanding, I think it is what they are pushing, and people gobble them up believing the marketing that thin and light is good.

for me asus is big NO, i ever tried to replace the keyboard then the damn laptop just died, and straight go to trash can
