Radeon extremely low market share, only 8% in Q3 2022?

If you consider the title and poll, it's kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy, wouldn't you think? :laugh:

For me to buy a Radeon card again it would need to have at least 90% of the RT performance of the Nvidia competitor in whatever price bracket I was shopping in. The last Radeon card I owned was a 290X in a secondary pc. It's been around 15 years since a Radeon Card sat in my primary PC. I had a lot of issues with 7970 Crossfire so I ditched them after a month for dual 680s that just ran much better in the majority of games I played at the time.

I try to support both camps as much as I can but other than picking up a 5700XT that I kept a couple months to test drivers no other Radeon cards have been very compelling to me over the last half decade.

DLAA is usable on my 3080ti with many games. You absolutely do not need a 4090 to use the full feature stack of RTX.

I see that, as usual, people downplay the revolution that is AI in graphics.


The funny thing is this anecdote I am seeing passed on so much that somehow GA102 has become slow as molasses just because the 4090 exists. Truth is, at least 96% of gamers are running something slower than an RTX 3080 Ti right now, and that 4% is including the people who bought a 3090, 3090 Ti, and a 4090 in there.

I even made a little running gag in the tech Discord servers I'm active on that I'm a homeless 'n' hungry hobo with "only" an old and slow 3090, what a poor, smh.

Truth is? It's probably comfortable to skip Ada and RDNA 3 altogether... i'll just try to get a 7900 XTX through 2023, but I can't lie that I am not in a hurry. My favorite games run like butter on my 3090.
 
As a customer lower prices are nice. AMD isn't gong to beat Nvidia by lowering prices though. From a business perspective, ultimately appearing as a value brand hurts more than helps.

AMD need to beat Nvidia in rasterization performance, in RT performance, and in features. The only way I see them doing the 2nd is if AMD cram two GPU chiplets on a single chip.

Feature wise, AMD is not bad but the real problem is that they are always behind Nvidia. Many AMD features may eventually reach parity with Nvidia but merely catching up is not enough. At some point if they want to be market leader they actually need to lead with new innovative features. Not every Nvidia feature is a homerun but you have to be at bat to even have a chance to knock it out of the park.

But I agree with others in that AMD needs to look at the tech and not just rasterized performance.

I don't care about DLSS or FSR as i want the real deal. But Ray tracing is the future and AMD needs to understand that.

Otherwise AMD are getting much better and I hope they do push the new tech too.
 
Well, my tower has a Vega 64 and my laptop has a 5600m, so I'd say I'm doing my part to "support the cause." However, I'm not buying a GPU every year or something. I have other things to spend my money on and GPUs are not near the top of my list of wants. As for how AMD is doing, that depends on the bottom and top line. If the top line drops, if it's still above the bottom, you're okay. You just need time to plan and fix it.

Technically, you don't need to use them, the same way you don't need to buy a 4K monitor, either. I'm still okay with 1080p native with no upscaling magic. If someone isn't, that's fine too. All I'm saying is, that it's a choice rather than necessity.
Dont see the need for triple digit framerates my self, in the past and even now I have played games at 30fps for image quality purposes and is fine. 60fps typically my upper limit.

AMD it feels like they have a better rasterization vs VRAM balance on their cards. Nvidia over emphasizing FPS.

I guess we're all waiting to see AMD's new 7000-series cards next month and see how they stack up vs. Nvidia's latest. I just bought two of the 6000 series in the last six months (6650 XT and 6800 XT) and I'm very pleased with their performance thus far. I'm not one for the "eye candy" yet that ray tracing/DLSS provide.
 
Future game engines will incorporate it directly and you will have no choice to ignore it, or deactivate it.

this is like banning all Gasoline powered cars from the road
cuts of thousands of perfectly capable cards *gtx 1080 5700XT ext*
and also comes at such a harsh performance cost to the lower end ones *2060*
for it to be mandatory A it needs to come at little to no performance cost
B an actually large share of the market needs a card with ray-tracing
I have many years of no issues with AMD driver's because I know how to setup a pc correctly.

One year of a 1060 vs a 580
showed many problems with the 1060 and updates braking games for months and multiple versions *WRC 9* as well as their overlay software crashing constantly
the 580 does not have these issues
AMD requiring you to source a freesync display to get tear-free game-play!)
Just Use V-SYNC it does it for you?

Radeon is a very good gaming card with some nice features. But after you compare the native FPS vs Nv features... that's pointless for most people that just play their games.

DLSS gives us less quality.
RT gives us less FPS for a few pointless shadows that are not here but 3mm left/right...
Sorry but I prefer pure rasterization, and if I need a bit more FPS, I can turn off a few graphics options. Upscale is just upscale and nothing more.
 
Had to check the percentage from Steam, doesn't look that good either. 13.13% for AMD.

while looking aruond at the other survey's "lauguage" there is a large chunk of "Simplified Chinese" like 32.17%. 1/3 of Steam is chinese, the next highest is 10% russian in language.

This is from the Graphics survey down at the bottom "Other 9.96% +0.33%" VS NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 7.39%+0.66%.

I wonder why those people chose "other".

I feel like these votes on this pole on techpowerup aren't truthful. :-/

The option "decrease image quality to nvidia level" is funny, but no, I chose lower prices. Radeons are cute and all but AMD must be better than nvidia especially with pricing. They'll make enough profit, don't worry.
Otherwise they're just another AdiosMyDineros company looking to prop up their shares. But enough about this -- for now.

But potentially not as far as you may imagine. If AMD is able to get their RT performance to acceptable levels before the next generation of consoles then almost certainly RT will become a cornerstone of those consoles' marketing, since AMD supplies their GPUs. If that happens you can expect console games to start embracing RT heavily, with the resultant knock-on effect for PC port and PC gaming as a whole.

Upscaling is for people who got greedy in their display choice and didn't have enough money left for a decent graphics card. Or for people whose budget only allows a 2060 or 6600 and still want to play with Ultra graphics.

I love my 38" Ultrawide, I assume it would look like trash at 1080P, or even 1440P.
my 3080 will push it without DLSS, but only around 80-100FPS, i like the smoothness of 144+

Depending on the game of course, some don't need any upscaling to hit the 144FPS range.
 
Frankly, there's nothing they can do at this point of the product cycle to make me buy a card. Prices have dropped to acceptable levels, but I don't actually "need" a new card yet, and the "want" part of brain says "I've waited this long, what's another few months for midrange RDNA3?"

There are alternatives to Nvidia's raytracing tech you know...
 
PhysX only works on CPU in DX12, completely useless to include with any raytracing game. It's completely turned into garbage with DX12 & the low lever A.P.I. I'm pretty sure that physX on cpu with raytracing can be traced back to poor frame times too. As it would causes sycrnoization problems with the image & output of the image.

How about Nvidia fix their overhead on their drivers back to the RTX 2080 ti, Not just the RTX 4090.
Is PhysX even still used? I haven't seen it in games for many years now. I think that it was completely supplanted by Havok.

Who cares.... CP2077 (and all those other unnamed games ;)) runs fine on AMD. It's RT where nVIDIA shines, not PhysX. All modern gaming computers offer more than enough performance to run PhysX. You do not need nVIDIA hardware for that.
 
They should increase their driver quality. Solve some of those long standing problems and regressions. A few years ago I nearly gave up my rx5700 $280 new egg special due to driver issues.
